Cindy McCain As First Lady (Same Power as Hillary Had) Refuses To Release Taxes

Senator John McCain's wife refuses to release her tax returns and now says she will not do so even if she becomes America's First Lady.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Cindy McCain says she will never make her tax returns public even if her husband wins the White House and she becomes the first lady.

"You know, my husband and I have been married 28 years and we have filed separate tax returns for 28 years. This is a privacy issue.  My husband is the candidate,"

Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain said in an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on Thursday.

Asked if she would release her tax returns if she was first lady, Cindy McCain said: "No." ...

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Cindy McCain's refusal to release her tax returns gives the appearance of a double standard on the part of her husband.

"What is John McCain trying to hide?" Dean said in a statement. "Throughout this campaign, he has acted like his own calls for openness and accountability apply to everyone but himself. Now he thinks he can bring that same double standard to the White House."

This worries me.  While Mrs. McCain is correct, John would be President, not her;  the idea that we'd have someone in the White House helping to run the Presidency (think of Hillary Clinton and her claims of authority during her campaign), that we know nothing about, is a bit frightening.

Who does she have financial dealings with and why?  Who's given her money and why?  What deduction is she claiming and why?  What ownership does she have?  Who does she control?

All this relates to her dealings with foreign entities, lobbyists, members of the media and any companies or people she's done business with over the past 28 years of `public life' being Senator John McCain's wife.

This should be a big issue for those white blue collar workers that the media seems to have a fixation on during this campaign.  Does she own the company they work for?

I recommend Senator Barack Obama and other Democrats immediately start hammering Cindy and John about this issue.  This is not right.  She MUST release her taxes if she is to become First Lady with the power that Hillary Clinton claims to have had.

you know

here you're trying again to do the "release taxes" issue. Is that the best you've got on Cindy McCain?

And, by the way, there is no way you can compare a lifetime of public service of HRC to Cindy McCain, so your diary title once again betrays  dissing of HRC.

Re: Funny you should ask

Already out there.

This isn't about Hillary except to the effect she said she had a lot of responsibility and power while being First Lady.

do you really want a woman with this kind of power in control of a man that you know nothing about in the white house?

Why are you confounding 2 issues?

One is how much power HRC says she had as First Lady. The other is Cindy McCain. They're not one and the same. Having said that ...

I'm actually on Cindy's side on this one. She's not the one running for office. On the other hand if her money is being used for McCain's presidential run, then it should be an issue.

Well...

I seriously doubt Cindy McCain will have any power in a McCain White House.  Considering the way he talks to her in public I don't think he considers her an equal partner.  LOL

I personally have never cared that much about the whole spousal tax return thing.  If they file seperate I do think she has a right to privacy.

Re: Well...

As much as I hate to say this, their taxes are not filed jointly so her returns are off limits (although I am DYING of curiousity).  Whatever money she gives him or his campaign is reported as income on his returns.

They have maintained separate finances since their marriage, per her prenuptial agreement with him.  Her family didn't want a piker like him getting his hands on all that money.

Re: Cindy McCain As First Lady

I'm sorry you don't understand what I'm saying.  I'm not going AFTER Hillary.  I'm using the points she made about her powers (she SAYS she help negotiate Ireland peace treaty - for Gods sake) and pointing out that IF Cindy becomes First Lady - Americans should know who she has investments/ownerships with.  She may USE the power of the White House to empower her own wealth and to do things.

Don't you get it?

Michelle and Obama released their taxes.
