Edwards: Investing in Green Collar Jobs

Hello all,

Back to the issues and how Edwards is leading and promoting ideas that go to solving several problems in this country. He announced a new plan to promote the development of green collar jobs, investing in TRAINING high schoolers and college students in the renewable energy field so we can slowly start pulling up to Europe on renewable energy. Have a look

The initiative announced today would ensure that this aggressive battle against global warming also translates into new Iowa jobs. In particular, the Edwards plan will:

Provide Green Collar Jobs Training Grants that will help train and certify up to 150,000 workers a year for jobs in the new energy economy - meeting the needs of industry and Americans seeking better jobs and opportunity, as well as our environment.

Create 50,000 stepping-stone jobs in the new energy economy. As part of his plan to end poverty in America, Edwards called for the creation of government-subsidized stepping stone jobs that give people with barriers to employment a chance to learn new skills and work their way up. Edwards would dedicate 50,000 of these jobs to companies involved in the new energy economy.

Use grant funding to encourage partnerships between states, businesses, labor unions, community groups and educators to train these workers - so that workers actually get the skills and training that businesses need
.

Provide grant funding to community colleges to partner with companies involved in the new energy economy to develop job training programs specifically tailored to meet needs of this growing industry.

Ensure that high school students are prepared for jobs in the new energy economy. Edwards would create Green Career Academies -- small learning communities within high schools that use a college preparatory curriculum with a career theme and engage employers, unions, and local colleges to participate.

Hey look common sense, boldness and looking to the future for workers who need to be prepared for the new economy!!

So what we have here folks is someone who is not just pandering to the environmental cause because it sounds good and they can get creds for saying they want to save the planet. Here is someone who realizes that renewable energy is not only the way to save the planet, but will help the economy AND that if the USA does not start learning these trades NOW we will be left EVEN FURTHER BEHIND other countries then we already are.

How's that for leadership?

This is on his website.

and a parting quote from Edwards on what this is about:

Lending a Hand Up with Green Collar Stepping Stone Jobs: Many willing workers cannot find jobs because of the place they live, a lack of skills, experience, and references, or other obstacles like a criminal record. Up to 18 percent of former welfare recipients do not have a job. Too many welfare-to-work and employment service programs have slotted people into easily available jobs with low pay, few benefits, and no room for advancement. Edwards will create 50,000 government-subsidized Green Collar Stepping Stone jobs for hard-to-serve job-seekers. Green Collar Stepping Stone jobs will not be dead-end jobs. Workers will receive on-the-job training and work toward a training credential. Studies have shown that skills certification programs are critical for lower-skilled workers' efforts to move up. Employers who hire Stepping Stone graduates and offer living wages and benefits will be eligible for existing Work Opportunity Tax Credits and given preference in public contracts.

Great diary and great idea of green collar jobs.

Yes - it appears all Edwards comprehensive and creative solutions have been thoroughly studied - rather than merely providing broad based "solutions" - typical of most candidates' stump speeches.

sounds very nice . . .

Any Edwards supporters care to list all the promises Edwards has made, along with credible cost estimates?

Re: sounds very nice . . .
I think most of his proposals are accompanied by means of how to pay for them.
Students need more VocTech courses, rather than more NCLB courses that don't prepare them for the Real World.  High school and college courses on 'green jobs' wouldn't be that costly and would be beneficial in creating taxpayers - just as "air conditioning repair" has been.

Oddly enough

he lists the costs in his proposals for the most parts.

Oh and I AM SURE THEY ARE CHEAPER THAN WAR and WILL ACTUALLY MAKE THE COUNTRY MONEY IN THE FUTURE.

Or are you to afraid to admit you have spend money to make money and that Edwards is willing to put money where it needs to go.

Sorry, climate change cannot be stopped for free or on hope alone.

Re: Oddly enough

Actually it can be stopped for free. Polluting costs money. Stop polluting, stop climate change.

Everybody drives cars. They cost a lot of money. Gas costs a lot of money.

I ride a bike everywhere I need to go. I never buy gas. My bike was paid off in full the day I got it. It costs me a lot less money to not pollute than to pollute.

Climate change can be free. It's just not easy. And you can't just do what everybody else is doing, because that's obviously not working.

You can go to his brand

new issues page and read all his proposals with the costs listed that he has.

He is very up front about this. Just a couple of clicks will enlighten you, or is that too complicated.

Re: Edwards: Investing in Green Collar Jobs
This is the real face of hope.  In 2003, Edwards talked about the hope of a better America.  He had some really good ideas then.  But he has really fleshed out his ideas and added the "green collar" concept which is very Keynesian.  Enough people still remember the Great Depression and how they got put to work thru the WPA.  My grandfather was laid off the Ford Motor line because he started bleeding from the nose which was probably caused by the paint spray and having no protective gear.  The god damm gubmint stepped in a paid him $15 a week to work for the WPA.  He worked for a year until he got well and then went back to Ford.
Somebody more wonky than me can find the cost estimates.  Edwards never proposes anything unless he has a way to pay for it that isn't bullsh*t.

Real Hope

Right on.  Real hope comes when you know action is being taken to change the situation.  That's what John Edwards' campaign has been all about, taking action.

He offers real hope.

Unlike Hope,Inc - The Audacity of Hype.

He offers platitudes and happy talk straight from the Axelrod's note cards.

If  Obama keeps it up he will do to "hope" what George W. Bush did to "freedom".

>>>I cannot understand why anybody would not want him to be our president.

Well- apparently the corporate sponsors of the corporate media are frightened of Edwards innovative ideas that help the poor and middle classes. These are the same folks who rely on the corporate media to shape their images and opinions of the candidates.
