I went see Hillary in Las Vegas yesterday. Not since I saw Elvis live have I ever seen such a reaction by the crowd. She said all the things that we were desperate to hear and the crowd reached out to her as a lifeline. This is my third event with Hillary and over the last few months I have seen the people of Nevada warm to her and the idea of a Hillary Clinton presidency. Men, women and children were screaming for her. She is the only one out there making any sense.
After this last week when Bush mentioned the unthinkible possibility of WW3, I believe people here were more desperate for someone to change the subject and that she did. Bush and the Republicans are telling us how we could be sacrificed for freedom and Hillary is telling us that she can make our lives better. Its like there are two Americas -- one this dark place where life is about war and terror and the other just over the horizon which offers a better life for all of us. God I hope we can get there.
James -- I think you are absolutely right. They want Dean to fail because he is transforming the Democratic Party. We have won in states where we never had a chance before. Some say the downside is that these new Democrats aren't as liberal as the Democrats elected from traditionally Democratic states. But that is the tradeoff to have control of Congress. Our party has to have a big-tent in order to recruit more supporters. What we have seen from Bush is a president who has decided to ignore the Democratic majority but once we have a new president this will change and we will finally get the issues were care about addressed by a Congress and a President committed to forging compromises for the greater good.
There is a problem because of Dean's 50 state strategy. Some feel that money should only be put into states the Democrats can win -- but I agree with Dean that there is no place the Dems can't win if we put our resources in those states.
chief -- Just read the article and Obama seems to be shooting himself in the foot. How can a candidate who is running in Democratic Primaries do things like this? First he doesn't want to be anywhere the other candidates are -- which included a huge barbeque in Iowa even though he was in the same city, he was the only Dem who didn't attend. He didn't show up for the AARP debate. Now he is doing a tour with a Gospel Singer who believes that Gays can be cured, like its a disease. He says he doesn't need young people or senior support to win the nomination. Who does he think is going to vote for him then? Who is giving him all this money and boy are they getting rooked.
It is still my belief that Obama wants to run as an Independent when he loses the Democratic Primaries and I say that only because there has be a reason for him to be this dumb.
After I wrote my comment I found an interview with Ms. Pelosi and Ariana Huffington on The Huffington Post. In the interview she said everything that you just wrote and when Ariana asked her if she had gone soft on Bush Ms. Pelosi reiterated how she really felt about Bush. She is very angry at him but as you said there is very little that she or Harry Reid can do as long as Republicans continue to walk the plank with Bush.
The thing that bothers me is that so many people are perceiving the Congressional Democrats to be weak and that perception (with the aid of the Media) can become reality next November when people cast their votes.
I don't know what to make of Nancy Pelosi. When she got in she seemed a strong Speaker, called Bush delusional and said she was committed to ending the war in Iraq. Now she seems almost afraid of him as if she has been intimidated or threatened in some way.
When Barbara Boxer commented about Bush's New Conference where he spoke about WW3 she said she had to choose her words very carefully, using words like unstable but saying she only meant his words and not him and that she wanted the world leaders to know that the rest of us didn't want WW3.
I believe the Democrats are running out the clock on this administration and the President who has made it obvious that he will not work with Congress. I wish Nancy Pelosi the best of luck. She and Harry Reid are tough cookies so something must have happened for them to back away from their goals.
Once we have a Democratic President and a 60 vote majority in the Senate -- this will be a different country.
I'm just hoping the Christian Right runs a third party candidate. It would free the Republicans from being shackled to these whackos and allow them to compromise with the Democrats without fear of retribution from the idealogs on the right.
I started out as an Edwards supporter. I have been to an Edwards meeting and all he seems to speak about is Lobbiest money and how Hillary copies his healthcare plan. I didn't hear a grand vision from Edwards. I came away disappointed. I have seen Hillary 3 times and every time I like her better. She is warm and compassionate and really relates to people.
How informed do you have to be to know what you like and what makes you feel comfortable?
The Economists are predicting that by the beginning of next year we will be in a recession. This is due to in part to foreclosures. People who bought homes in 2004 and 2005 are having to renegotiate those mortgages and finding that what was a 5% mortgage is going up to 27%. As a result, people are walking away from new homes. In my state 1 in 165 homes are in foreclosure and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Will Bush talk about the reality of this situation? NEVER Instead he will probably decide to attack another country to change the subject.

Great Diary -- With a more Democratic Congress and and Democratic President who works with them how can we go wrong?

The money race is very important to the media because of the millions which will be spent on ads.

Perhaps unions are tired of spending their money on losers. I'm glad they are waiting till after the primaries to endorse candidates.

Hi there Book. Love spice cake -- It will be nice when we can all get along again.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment on this.
