It won't matter at all whether McCain will be competent as an executive. What will matter is what he can convince people of.
George Bush will do everything in his power to create some kind of national emergency, or a bunch of them if possible. McCain will look like a seasoned warrior addressing the problems of the day, and Obama will ask us all to pray.
I'm committed to convincing people to make a decision based on ISSUES, with their EYES WIDE OPEN, not based on some EST-like manipulation to decide on a candidate.
Know who he is and what his weaknesses are. THEN, if you decide to support him, fair enough, but most of his supporters have no idea who he is or what he stands for. He tries to be a tabula rasa so that people can read their own hopes and desires into what he says. It's manipulative, and it's condescending, and even worse, will come crashing down around our ears.
When the young people who are getting so psyched over all this are disappointed because Obama really is pro-war and pro-corporate, most of them will be out of politics forever.
