Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

Jimmy Carter, who I consider our last great President, but I know other here are not such huge fans.  Carter never got along with the Clintons too well.  Anyway he said in Nigeria yesterday:

"We are very interested in the primaries. Don't forget that Obama won in my state of Georgia. My town which is home to 625 people is for Obama, my children and their spouses are pro- Obama.
My grandchildren are also pro- Obama. As a Super Delegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for but I leave you to make that guess.

Not too much for me to comment on here.  I think Carter could help with Democratic evangelicals.  http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?i d=107611

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

This means that fully half of all the Democratic presidents elected in the last 40 years now support Obama!

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

That's a problem, then...I have it on good authority that Carter got hitched to Gravel in Massachusetts. All is lost.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

Didn't you hear?  Gravel isn't a democrat anymore.  He got traded to the Libertarians.

I wonder what we got in exchange.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

I wonder why BHO is such a magnet for losers. Birds of a feather...there is one or two more to join the ranks.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

Jimmy Carter won the presidency... sadly all the factors were set for him to have a terrible 4 years before he stepped foot in his office, combined with the Iran Crisis, it was going to be uphill.

Don't bother. RC's just a troll who's been occupying the hidden list all night.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

If Carter is a loser, then I don't want to win.

He's good people.  I'd even hazard to say he's Great people.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

I admire and respect former President Carter.  He has been one of the best examples as a former president to the world for his humanitarian efforts.  However, he does not have a great track record for endorsements.  He picked Howard Dean in 2004, but it did not help Dean out too much just before the Iowa caucus. Al Gore endorsed Dean also.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

If you read Trippi's book the problem with Dean was far more in-house that the endorsements...Obama has used endorsements brilliantly, as narrative shifters, beyond that they do very little to sway voters.

But don't forget that Carter is a

superdelegate.  So in this particular primary he is golden.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

Obama addresses a number of African issues in his campaign platform from a very internationalist perspective...it's no wonder at all that Carter would support him.

I like Carter...

..but I will never forget that he boycotted the Olympics, and introduced a 55 MPH national speed limit. He was sort of a nanny president.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

Obama has more Governors and Senators endorsing him, and only one less Representative endorsing him than Clinton.  She gets her lead from DNC members, and Distinguished Party Leaders (DPL), which are former presidents, vice presidents, presidential nominees, DNC chairmen, former speakers of the house, and former senate leaders.

A Carter endorsement would be cool.  But he's probably of the same mind as Al Gore and others, waiting to see what happens in April and May before coming down on one side or another.

Carter a great president?
Oy.

Wait a minute
I thought it was "Unseemly" for ex presidents to get involved in a Democratic party. I thought they were supposed to be "elder statesmen" and not get involved in partisan politics.

Re: Wait a minute

Care to tell that to Bill Clinton?  Not just his involvement in Hillary's campaign but his getting cozy with the Bush family (including the lesser Bush).

Jimmy!

Don't forget that Clinton won the home states of Kennedy, Kerry & Richardson. Let's see if Carter will convince them to do the right thing, too.

The day Carter endorses Obama is the day he

Not very mature. Are you always this way?
Probably will be banned. That's OK.  The tone here is mystifying.

Do you disagree?

Re: The day Carter endorses Obama is the day he

He won't endorse.  He's even implied as much.  This isn't an "almost endorsement" this is a "implied preference with no hope of ever being an endorsement."

Re: The day Carter endorses Obama is the day he

Obama has sooo much in common with Carter. For one, IF he is elected, he'll be a one-term President too.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

I actually have fond memories of Jimmy Carter, as do many Washingtonian's, for some reasons that don't get discussed much.  I was living in DC during his presidency, working as the program director of the Pacifica radio station, WPFW.

Carter put his daughter Amy into public school. That was very controversial at the time.  One of my best friends was her teacher.

I still keep in a scrapbook my invitation to the White House - Jimmy Carter actively supported jazz, and DC has the birthplace of Duke Ellington.

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

I lived in D.C. way after Carter...and use to go to the Bohemian Caverns over on U St. all the time - I think it was open in the 70s too, and the Duke played there way back in the day...may I miss that place

Re: Jimmy Carter almost Endorses Obama

we did some live broadcasts from the Caverns back in the day.  Remember it very fondly.

We also had John Conyers hosting a program called "Jazz from the Hill" which was a lot of fun.
