Democrats - the media is failing you.

I have written many times about how shameful the US media has been during this primary.  Often referred to as 'The Fourth Estate', the press has the role of shaping public perception in politics.  In this (and in fact the last 3) election cycles "The Press" has done a great disservice and failure to the American public and its implications have been felt around the world.

The most recent example of this is the response from the press with regard to the most recent ABC debate.  I will state for the record - that the first half of the debate was about nonsense - but lets be honest - nonsense is all we and the media have been talking about for weeks now and this was the 21st(?) debate - so I think ABC was justified to ask the questions they did.

My, oh my, but weren't those fellows from ABC News rude to Barack Obama at this week's presidential debate.

Nothing but petty, process-oriented questions, asked in a prosecutorial tone, about the Democratic front-runner's personal associations and his electablity. Where was the substance? Where was the balance?

Where indeed. Hillary Clinton and her aides have been complaining for months about imbalance in news coverage. For the most part, the reaction to her from the political-media commentariat has been: Stop whining.

That's still a good response now that it is Obama partisans--some of whom are showing up in distressingly inappropriate places--who are doing the whining.

The shower of indignation on Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos over the last few days is the clearest evidence yet that the Clintonites are fundamentally correct in their complaint that she has been flying throughout this campaign into a headwind of media favoritism for Obama.

Last fall, when NBC's Tim Russert hazed Clinton with a bunch of similar questions--a mix of fair and impertinent--he got lots of gripes from Clinton supporters.

But there was nothing like the piling on from journalists rushing to validate the Obama criticisms and denouncing ABC's performance as journalistically unsound.

When I compare the Canadian media coverage of the election to the American it makes my stomach turn as at least here while they may lean to one candidate over another - there is an attempt at real journalism - you know telling the story without injecting a blatant position.  US networks, papers, magazines, websites, and blogs after another are unproportionately and unfairly attacking one candidate over the other thus making them not merely observers but participants in the Obama phenomenon. ....

Re: The Failure of the Fourth Estate - Part II.

the media wants to make money so they go with whatever they think sells.  Atm they are in full ramrod Obama mode, but in a couple weeks they will switch gears and try to destroy somebody else.

It is a reflection of who we are as a nation.  We do not want to see positive or uplifting stories nor do we enjoy being challenged mentally with stories on the actual issues.  Sadly we enjoy watching people burn more than figuring out how to lift each other up.

The media does do a crappy job

with debates.  They honestly should give them over to blogs.  The dailykos debate back in 2007 covered issues fairly well.  And all the candidates were invited.

Re: The media does do a crappy job

i agree - but it is another example of double standards at work that many BO supporters (including the media) are hypocritical about...

Re: The media does do a crappy job

have you watched tv the past month?  Pretty soon Obama is going to have to reject and denounce what Al Capone did in Chicago.

The media has roasted both of our candidates and will not go easy on either of them in the general.

Re: The media does do a crappy job

Yea, I'm sure the Kos debate would be really fair to Hillary Clinton.

Re: The media does do a crappy job

Hey Student Guy!

The problem with the media doing debates is the problem with the sources of revenue for the media. Unfortunately, DKos is not representative of much the entire Democratic Party yet they have taken to determining who is or is not a Democrat. Witness the ferocious war they are waging in the progressive movement. Not everyone agrees with them, and they let people know it through censorship and elimination of dissenting voices that their turf has been staked out and their agenda has been set, and they have already decided who has won the Democratic nomination. When they turned on John and Elizabeth Edwards, it became pretty clear that assaults on other Democrats would be the norm, and that they were truly obsessed with Hillary Clinton. Some have had the decency at least to reiterate that the destruction of both the legacy and the members of the DLC is on the top of their agenda.

That is true

I only cross post there (like my medicare diary and my video round up of Johnny Mac) and rarely comment there.  It is too big, but back in 2007 the splits were less pronounced as the front page was more like Todd now in being relatively unbiased.  Markos' posts have inflammed the community.

The Dkos debate in 2007 covered a lot of issues.

Re: Democrats - the media is failing you.

The media screwed Gore. The media screwed Dean. The media screwed Hillary. Now they'll try to screw Obama. I really hate the MSM.

I actually don't think they will screw Obama

I think that they want him to win.. the nominaton, not the GE.

We'll see..

The media controls the public...

The media tells us how to be a good American..The media keeps us in line by playing the fear card constantly. The media chooses our candidates. Take John Edward for example; During the Iowa primary, Obama came in first, Edwards came in second, Clinton came in third. The media discussed Obama and Clinton and left Edwards out. This went on for days, Edwards didn't get the media coverage. Another example; the media created "first tear candidates" and "second tear candidates" if you were first tear, you were given more time/questions.

Re: Democrats - the media is failing you.

When ABC's excuse for the debate was "Our Job is to make the candidates uncomfortable" I realized just how far the media has fallen... There Job is to reveal and parse the issue.  Not to tear every politician from limb to limb.

Re: Democrats - the media is failing you.

Well, I've been a critic of the media for a long time...perhaps all my life... I'd just never heard them state something so false so flatly.

Re: Democrats - the media is failing you.

I've been told by my friends from Canada that the difference in our media coverages is truly astonishing.  You're right.  Our media (in the States) is failing us.
