I read this article and immediately emailed it to all my conservative women friends. So you think the "radical right" only wants to outlaw abortion... think again.
Sometimes timing is crucial, in small towns there may only be one pharmacy, then what.
What really gets me is the states want to strengthen the laws that allow this!
So should clerks at Walmart refuse to sell guns? Should checkers at markets refuse to sell beer or cigarettes? Where does it end. Or is it only ok because it involves women's rights.
Yes, the media is a big problem. Most americans go about their daily life in a rush. They don't have time to search out the truth, but take the daily sound bites from right wing biased news media as truth. That is why so many people still think there is a link between OBL and Iraq! Most would rather watch "desperate housewives" than read a newspaper or watch a news program. The middle class is so exhausted trying to keep the statue quo, all they want is mindless entertainment and if the media throws a couple twisted sound bites their way, they take them as gospel. Thanks to the current administration, the middle class will have to peddle even faster to stand still which means it is only going to get harder to get our message across.
Yes, Yes, Yes.... we must appeal to the true religious believers that what the republicans believe and say is very unchristian, unethical and wrong. Isn't killing wrong, shouldn't we love our neighbor... start these dialogs within the churches. If the churches respond that the end justifies the mean, then point out again, this flies in the face of christianity and just about every other religion.
We can and must use their "whiteness" and lack of diversity against them. Make conservative and right wing dirty words. It won't be easy since the conservatives own the mainstream airwaves. Enlist the young people who came out to vote for the first time. We don't want them to be so disappointed that they say "what's the use". In fact, lets go after the 14-16 group, they'll vote next time!
Keep ever vigilant! We musn't give up, keep outing the criminal in the white house! My kids favorite slogan.... the real terrorists are in the white house.
Only the Repubs could take a win of this NONmagnitude and turn it into a mandate... At least Bush admits he didn't have the people with him before... it is interesting.
Doesn't it feel good to have discussions with people who for the most part agree with you? This is a great way to ease the pain of the election. You are not alone here!
I just posted on abortion on a different thread, but I agree that we must not outlaw abortion, just make it irrelevant. Better birth control, more immediate options (morning after pill, etc) and the numbers will drop.
We've always said, if men had babies things would be very different! It's a women's body, therefore it is her choice!
I respect your thoughts, however, a clump of cells is not a child. A embryo that cannot survive outside of it's host is not a child. Women spontaneously abort these embryos all the time and never know that they existed, it is nature's way of rejecting offspring that are not viable. So how do you define life? Therein lies the problem. There are so many different ideas of what constitutes life. Is it viability? Age? If defining when these cells become a person was easy, we would have done it by now. It has been my experience that those people who vehemently support pro-life at all costs, place no value on the life of the women, only the embryo. The women is always viable, but not so the fetus. So how can it be ok to destroy a women, but not her unborn fetus?
The problem with the "partial birth" abortion, is that no one really knows what it is or why it is used. To pass a law that makes it a crime, even if it means death or severe injury to the mother is unacceptable. When a child dies before delivery, this method is used to extract the dead fetus. If this method were outlawed, women would have to go through labor and delivery (induced of course) to expell the dead fetus. That is cruel and inhumane punishment. It should be up to a women and her doctor to have all options available.
The best way to avoid abortion being used as a form of birth control is to make real birth control readily available. The morning after pill, birth control pills, etc.. but many religions don't want that either.
You're right about one thing, when it comes down to one issue, Choice is the one issues I will always come out to support! A women's right to choose must never be compromised. In fact, that is what forced me to leave the republicans in the first place. There are just as many people who feel strongly that women need to have control over their own bodies as feel the need to take that control away. Thank goodness the democrats do not support the anti-abortion movement. Perhaps the stereotyping comes from the clinic bombings and extreme ranting and raving from some of the Pro-life groups. It plays well on TV.
Any senator anti roe v wade should NOT be the senate leader! There will be an all out assault on it sometime in the next 4 years. We need some one who will fight hard until we take back the senate and congress!
I think if you throw abortion in the face of the red staters they will come down on the pro-life side. They may quietly think it is none of their business what a women does with her own body, but they never want to publically admit that, they are secretly hoping that the whole issue will go away. It is only the conservative fringe that feels so strongly anti-abortion. If we make them chose a side it will go against abortion. Our best protection is to protect Roe V. Wade.
How is it possible that this nation couldn't get the ERA through the states over a 10 year period, but outlawing Gay marriage looks like a slamdunk? Some days it seems like we are in a time warp... have we gone back 40 years?!
Well put Alex! Now if only those things would actually happen, so that the bible belt would awaken from this religious nightmare that they call moral values. I'm constantly reminding my school-age children that we are more like the early patriots than the Pro-Bush group.. going along with the group is NOT patriotic, standing up for what is right IS. I love to remind these stodgy rightwing people who wrap themselves in the flag that if this were the revolutionary war they would be the enemy! It blows their minds.
I too was raised in the east and live in CA.I will profit handsomely from the demise of inheritance taxes, but I'd gladly pay more if that's what it takes to even out the disparity between the ultra-rich and the poor. There is more to life than money. Religion has been used for centuries to herd the ignorant masses in support of corrupt leaders. Wake-up America.
While "right to life" groups do come out to support their cause, the majority of americans are pro-choice. I became a democrat because I am pro-choice and have found the republican agenda to be more and more repugnant. No old man in some southern bible state is going to dictate what my daughters can and cannot do with their own bodies. We musn't let go of the things we believe just because it doesn't win us elections. If winning is all there is then we might as well be republicans. I like to think we are above that. What really floors me is that women are sometimes their own worst enemy. How could any women/mother vote for a man who willing sends their sons to die without batting an eye. What about our soldiers right to life? Maybe we need to remind the bible belt that you can't pick and choose which commandment you want to obey if you are a person of faith. Can they really justify protecting a clump of cells over a young marine? Thou Shall Not Kill, applies to both.
Yes, he won. That in itself is not a mandate, because the number of people on both sides are almost even. We lost because no one bothered to counter the homophobic, anti-gay marriage ballot issues in 11 states (not that there is a way to counter them). People in those states came out to vote against gay marriage and managed to vote for prez at the same time. They had a reason to vote. This was a brilliant plan by the Repubs to get their wishy-washy religious base to the polls. They got out the vote, we didn't do as well. I have to admit the Repubs are extremely cunning. We need to take a page from their "stragery" book. I just hope that we can keep the momentum going after such a tough loss. In two years we could start taking back the congress and in 4 years the presidency. Thank goodness we still have enough votes in the senate to block a bad supreme court choice!
I agree, there will be another attack and not on airplanes ( Bin there, done that). Something shocking. Will the country realize that it might have been avoided, if GWB and been sent packing? Or will the repubs spin it their way? We are now smack dab in the middle of a global holy war, christians, jews and muslims.
