Creation of National Community Newspapers Association

Looking for people who want to act as the point person/s and owner/s of local newspaper/s under a nonprofit.  These person/s need to live in red and purple states, preferably in the red, purple and rural areas of the state. Seeking people who plan to continue to live in these regions.  This idea comes out of the reality that in cities there already exists several alternative sources of news. The idea also grows out of the realization that not everyone uses the Internet.  There are very good business reasons for this confederation.  However, the first step is to determine general interest level.
Red, purple and rural areas are the places most in need of alternative sources of news.

The long-term strategic goal is to create viable local newspapers in rural, purple and red areas of each state that people can trust.  The papers will present the truth of the subject being reported and how these subject matters impact the lives of local people including legislation by federal and state government, religion, jobs outlook, entertainment/sports, commentary and other subject-matters.

Please contact me at redstatepurplestatenews@yahoo.com if you are interested in this endeavor. People with a background in business, law, journalism or communication are strongly preferred.

Ashtabula, Ohio
Rural area with a non-profit alternative paper...Sentinel.  They are not on-line.

The local paper has mostly AP stories in it...The Ashtabula Star-Beacon.  I believe in the South county area Jefferson has the Gazette.

Hope this helps.

A good idea.
May I also suggest you consider networking with established alternative newpapers? There are many, and they are in every "blue, red, or purple" region you can imagine. Flint, MI has a mildly left, though heading center-right traditional paper. Countering that are at least 2 alternative papers.

I am a freelance writer, contribute to my paper quite often. Again, good idea.

Re: A good idea.
One of the reasons why I am putting this out is to do precisely what you are suggesting. This association is still in development. I have been trying to contact as many of the opinion leaders on the blogsphere to get this ball rolling as possible. I am an attorney, but I can't do this alone. The reality is that we can't keep waiting until the election year to advance progressive ideas in the red and purple zones of the country. By that point, it is too late because for the rest of the time all these regions are often hearing is a relentless conservative agenda that distorts our agenda and hypes theirs. My goal with this is to restore the balance that has been loss over the last 25 years.

You should broaden this appeal to anywhere
conservative moguls have purchased local daily and/or weekly newspapers, including the blue states.

A far-right Republican recently purchased the Journal Newspapers in the Virgina-Maryland market.

Examiner owner buys 3 more papers

scroll down the page for the headline

The owner of the San Francisco Examiner added three more newspapers to his stable and also formed a new company to oversee his media interests.

Denver business executive Philip Anschutz last week purchased The Journal Newspapers in Alexandria, Va., which publishes the Northern Virginia Journal, Montgomery Journal and Prince Georges Journal.

The six-day-a-week papers have a combined circulation of 115,000 and, like the Examiner, are distributed free of charge.

Clarity Media Group, a newly created firm, will operate the newspapers and associated printing facilities.

Clarity didn't disclose how much it paid for the newspapers.

Anschutz purchased the Examiner earlier this year.

What the article doesn't say is that Philip Anschutz is a right winger.

Here is the article covering his purchase of the San Francisco Examiner.

Is he trying to become a new Rupert Murdoch?

Re: You should broaden this appeal to anywhere
This is precisely what I am concerned about- the replacement of truly fair and balance news that affects local people in diferent communities with right wingers who don't care about the people in these communities. The idea that we can change anything through this wall of media saturation is I believe wrong. One can not expect any candidate to get his point across or any progressive policy fairly evaluated in this context. It's simply not going to happen.  The fact Kerry had to wait until the debate to get out who he truly was versus what the machine at the local, state and federal level of media coverage was saying should not be an acceptable reality to anyone wanting to create change. We simply can not wait until they decide to let us speak and on their terms.
