OH-02: Once More into the Breech

Update [2005-8-1 15:56:39 by Bob Brigham]: Way to get it done. Thanks everyone, you did it!

From the diaries--Chris

Here's the situation, the Paul Hackett decided to shoot the moon. Ohio's second congressional district favors Republicans by 30 pts. Running a safe campaign would result in failure.

Paul Hackett is a Fighting Democrat and he's gambling, pushing, pull out all of the stops and running like his life depends upon it (if he loses, he'll probably be sent back in Iraq).

To Get Out the Vote, we need to raise $30,000 today. Here's why.

Last week, the netroots stepped up and delivered around $40K a day. The campaign gambled and put all of that on TV (the ads are great and a Democrat is leading the Republicans in gross points in every market in every medium!!!).

It worked, and now Independents are breaking rapidly our way. And Democrats in the district are so fired up that the far more than expected are signing up for GOTV.

This has drastically increased the cost of the GOTV mobilization. The enthusiasm over the weekend was more than expected and more was spend during the huge door-to-door effort. Now the campaign needs money for tomorrow to finish the job.

The cost breaks down to around $50 a precinct with 600 precincts. The netroots best friend, Matt from ActBlue, is flying in right now to coordinate moving the money.

But we need enough to finish the job.

Your investments have made Hackett a contender. Please give one more time so we can win this in the field.

yeah...
It's really easy to gamble with someone else's hard-earned money.  I'd spin the roulette will over and over again, too, if I didn't have to pay for it... and if the potential prize was a congressional seat.

Re: yeah...
I think most people have grasped your point by now. And rejected it. There must be some other issue to get worked up over.

Ah hell!
I already busted by $50 monthly political contribution for August by kicking in $100 bucks Friday. I've never been able to stick to a budget before, why should I start now?

I'm in for another $100.

Done
But you better tell Hackett that if he conceeds I'm gonna kick his ass and Kerry's to boot. And I was the baddest dude on my junior high dodge ball team so he better take my threat seriously!

just contributed
Yeah, he better not concede. ;)  I just donated again, second time in the past 7 days.  Although I suspect the prospect of heading back to Iraq is motivation enough.

He sounds like a real straight shooter and someone who isn't afraid to call a liar a liar.

Break a leg!

Re: this is getting out of control.
you are only upset because he is not a so-called "centrist"... had this been Casey you wouldn't have said a word.

GREAT!!!
WAY TO GO!!!

We could have funded the annual salary of a state executive director today, but instead we shot our wad on a single day of rental-vans, drivers, and campaign advisors!  WAY TO GO!!!

Wish I could
But I already gave 2 x $500 to the next president this year. I think that's about my limit for now. Glad to see the fundraising is going well though. I always favor vets over non-vets when it comes to discussing the war.

Do political donations count towards any tax write-offs?

by Vote Hillary 2008 2005-08-01 02:15PM | 0 recs
Nope
Political contributions are generally not tax deductible.
by freedc 2005-08-01 02:32PM | 0 recs
Re: Nope
Dammit...I gave the second donation thinking I could write it off against some shares I sold at a loss. Figures. Yeah I'm definately done for the year.
by Vote Hillary 2008 2005-08-01 02:51PM | 0 recs
They are deductible
Just not for taxes.  For example, if you were a bad man this year, you can deduct some of that guilt knowing you at least contributed to righteous candidates who are trying to shake the country from the tyrannical grip of the 49% of the electorate, wingnuts and their followers, who have taken over 100% of the government.

If you incorporate yourself
Corportations have some extra rights... I think their political donations an get some kind of deduction.  Not 100% sure, though.  Someone will probably correct me
by teknofyl 2005-08-02 07:58AM | 0 recs
Donated again
I'm a new member to these sites, a recovering-Republican, libertarian, frustrated-Democrat political junkie. As soon as I read Hackett's site, he sounded like the type of person I want in Washington. I am so frustrated with politics these days; it's hard to find anyone I like, and although I am not inline with Hackett's platform 100%, he sounds like such a breath of fresh air.  $100 so far to his campaign. I wish him luck.

Question
Where can I see the results come in on the computer tomorrow? A city clerk? SoS Blackwell's (shudder) site? I wanna watch OH-02 come in live on my computer! (I did this for CA-05 in March and LA-03 and LA-07 in December)

It's Not Breech
It's Breach.

BTW, I put in $50 for Hackett.
Fingers crossed.

No, Moron...
It's, in fact, Breech...
by NCDem 2005-08-02 05:35AM | 0 recs
as in...
loading the gun again... putting another bullet into the "breech".
