Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wheel before 9/11

This is the most devastating attack that McCain will use against Hillary.  Not only is she less experienced than he is on national security and has flip-flopped on the War in Iraq, the Bankruptcy bill, No Child Left Behind, and a host of other issues, the Clinton foreign policy, which she claims as a part of her 35 years of experience, oversaw the massive rise of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda and the Clinton administration's woefully inept efforts to halt the march of terrorism to our shores.  The Clinton administration's anti-terrorism efforts will be huge fodder for McCain in the gemeral election.

The bottom line is that Al-Qaeda planned, funded, and organized the 9/11 attacks right under the Clintons' noses.  They built their bases in full view of the world in Afganistan, while the Clinton Administration was distracted by its own domestic scandals.

McCain will say: The 3AM call did come to Bill and Hillary Clinton during the years of the 1990's before 9/11, but they failed to pick up the phone.  They didn't halt the gathering storm that began with the first WTC attack, the embassy bombings, and the USS Cole.  As a result, 3000 Americans were defenseless against the evil of Osama Bin Laden. I will never let you or your children down.

I agree completely. This will be a huge line of attack against Clinton.

Bill Clinton attacked Al-Qaeda with cruise missile

After the attack on the USS Cole,
Bill Clinton attacked Al-Qaeda
with (non nuclear) cruise missiles.

From what we know now, his administration clearly viewed Al-Qaeda as a TOP PRIORITY ISSUE.

Unlike "our pet goat" which apprently didn't.

How soon we forget. When notified of the 9-11 attacks, Bush was in a class with some pre-school students, where he was reading "My Pet Goat". For several minutes, he continued to read the book, as the attacks proceeded against the Twin Towers and the Pentagon!

This was documented in Fahrenheit 9-11 !

Quite a contrast...

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

Richard Clarke said in his book that the Clintons warned Bush that the most important threat was Al Quida.  The Bush administration never held a single meeting.

Nice of you to you to use right wing talking points.

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

Maybe you missed the Hillary memo on how important 'vetting' is. It's all about being 'vetted'. Every line of attack must be used against fellow Democrats so that they will be 'vetted'. These are Hillary's rules we are just playing under them.

by JoeCoaster 2008-03-06 12:24PM | 0 recs
Vetting goes both ways Clintonistas

Horrible, unfair, but considering the crap Hill's been tossing lately completely in play. Hell, a 527 should pay to play that TV movie on how the Clinton Admin. ignored Bin Laden, after all they'd only be vetting her. (Seriously, why is any of this stuff out of bounds if Hillary can raise the stuff she can raise, is this sort of thing only cool if it attacks Obama? Does vetting only go one way?).

Re: Where you asleep?

Yesum mam we should shuffle on back and take our seats, and let the nice white woman win, I mean sure Obama's ahead and is being savaged by the CLinton camp but Obama supporters should hold their fire out of gratitude.

What do African-Americans have to do with this line of attack?

Re: Are you commenting in the right diary?

I think she means that Obama supporters should tell him to back off and wait his turn out of gratitude to the Clintons, or something I really can't tell anymore.

Re: Are you commenting in the right diary?

A lot if you're generally a racist.  Didn't you get the memo?  Black voters don't matter, just like red states and small states.  And caucuses.

by HSTruman 2008-03-06 12:21PM | 0 recs
Which one spoke at SOTBU again?

Long after it was obvious that she wasn't going to win black votes, Hillary was the one who went and spoke at the State of the Black Union last month.

To say that she thinks black voters don't matter is ridiculous.  She cares about the community,no matter who they choose to vote for.

the comment was about the poster, not Hillary, although I can see why my snark at the end was confusing.

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were wide awake

The Clinton admin was fully aware of the dangers Osama bin Laden posed for the US and its interests abroad. They tried to drive the point home as the Bush admin came in but the warnings about Osama fell on deaf ears. All of this has been fully documented.

Condi Rice couldn't be bothered with the warnings about Osama. The truth about who was behind the USS Cole bombing came out at the end of Clinton's admin and all the information was turned over to Rice. She ignored it.

It was the Bush admin that was asleep at the wheel, even after the NIE that said bin Laden wanted to attack inside the US.

Oh no,

the Clintons role (or lack thereof) in addressing the threats before 9/11 has not been raised in any political campaign or been front and center in the media like it will be when John McCain get a hold of her.

Re: What do Latinos for Hillary

<<The group that benefitted the MOST from the Clinton years is now bitching & moaning>>

Hmm, how about you give some proof of this with some other than your loud mouth.  The country's entire economy improved during the Clinton years, does that mean the whole nation must refrain from being critical of the Clinton years? And my comments are my own, not some "group" comment that you keep referring to.  Newsflash, my opinions are not bound to or representative of any entire race or other class of people.  The "Clinton years" are not some hallowed ground above critique.  Get your head out of your ass.

Rezko was fully documented and that didn't seem to stop you guys. Hey, this does make the tax records and Hillary's minutes as first lady open game though right, I mean you can't stand on your record if your constantly trying to hide it?

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep

So if he's a working class African American he should what shut up and stay out of the race out of gratitude? Hey maybe women should get back in the kitchen and let a man get things done, I mean Obama was good on Women's Rights in Illinois where's the gratitude?

by Socraticsilence 2008-03-06 12:20PM | 0 recs
Still don't get your point.

I'm not sure you understand what you are saying.  Some of us, yes even us black people, think of ourselves as individuals and understand that just because things got better for alot of black people in the 1990's, there were alot of us "working class" people who were left out of the Clinton Wall Street economy.

To Be Clear

This argument is BS and unfair to President Clinton.  Nonetheless, the diarist is correct that McCain will try to paint either of our candidates as terrorist-lovers.  The Clinton presidency will be used if she wins, fair or not.  Which again underscores how the myth about HRC being "fully vetted" is ridiculous.  The GOP will slime away regardless.

by HSTruman 2008-03-06 12:34PM | 0 recs
Re: To Be Clear

Is this a new attack? No, it's been around for years. That's the vetting part. It's already known that the GOP will use this.

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the

The only people that say that Clinton was somehow responsible for 9/11 or was "asleep at the wheel" are right-wingers. If you really believe this, perhaps you should change your party affiliation.

The Bin Laden/Sudan agreement will

DEFINITELY be used.

The story being that the Sudanese offered to send bin Laden to Saudi Arabia, but that they apparently refused. Why couldn't Clinton "convince" the Saudis?

The worst part is that the reason we didn't take bin Laden ourselves was that he wasn't yet indicted, or we couldn't hold him "legally."

McCain will put up some ad basically saying that the Clinton's think terrorism is a criminal matter, we think it's a national security matter.

And this time, tears aren't going to help.

Re: Bill and Hillary

I think the point is that this is no different than HRC arguing Obama is not qualified to be CIC.  I assume you had a problem with that too, right?

Maybe I'm more unique than I thought, since I actually think it's BS for EITHER candidate to argue the other isn't qualified to be CIC.

Rove?

Lets bring up the BS rightie talking points that they have been trying to use on the Clintons during gdubs term in office.

9/11, global warming, the bad economy, the Sudan crisis, the Space Shuttle disaster, the Tsunami, world wide earth quakes... they are ALL related to Bill Clinton and MUST be HIS fault.

right?

geeez.

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

How many of you Obama supporters actually believe this charge is accurate?

by Steve M 2008-03-06 12:58PM | 0 recs
Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

Probably about the same number of HRC supporters that think she and John McCain are the only candidates left who have "Commander and Chief credentials."

http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do;jse ssionid=A3A4B7C52A914232F12763F27B75A44F ?diaryId=4379

As I stated above, this is a BS charge that the GOP nonetheless will pursue during the GE.  Which sort of illustrates how silly the "HRC is fully vetted and Obama isn't" line of argument.  The GOP hates all Democrats and will lie and distort regardless of who they face.

by HSTruman 2008-03-06 01:06PM | 0 recs
Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

I'm just looking for a head count here.  My sense is that quite a few Obama supporters are happy to sign onto this line of attack.

Sure the GOP will blame everything on Bill Clinton like they always have.  Heck, I wouldn't put it past them to suggest that Obama may have been the 20th hijacker.  I'm not particularly afraid of either attack.

by Steve M 2008-03-06 01:16PM | 0 recs
Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

We certainly agree on that last point.  Lets have those arguments with the GOP and simply win them.

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep at the wh

I think if quite a few were "happy" with this line you would have seen it a lot earlier.   Personally, I have never been happy with the idea that doing the Right Wing's dirty work is constructive "vetting".

Re: Bill and Hillary Clinton were asleep

Is that why the Clintons actually prosecuted and convicted the first WTC bomber?

And I won't debunk the rest.

This is why I won't vote for Obama.  He purposefully attracts Republicans.  I don't need another Republican administration.

DISGUSTING

Digusting GOP talking points.

Perhaps if Mr. Clinton was not forced to testify in Arkansas Superior Court on our time, rather than after the term ended; and perhaps if the GOP didn't chant WAG THE DOG when Mr. Clinton tried to do something about Osama, we might have got them before we were hit.

But, this country was fat and happy, with nothing better to do than go after a great President over a BJ.

by Si Ella Puede 2008-03-06 02:20PM | 0 recs
This Dog don't hunt
I can't believe that this is coming from a Democrat.
This sounds more like the right wing callers on my radio show who when I criticized Bush would say, "But, but, but, Clinton did too". And speaking of dogs, I don't have one in this fight and I'm glad.  Both corporate Dems are trying to distract us from the real problems that face us.
When people are standing in bread lines will they really care about this?

Revisionist historians

the Clinton administration's woefully inept efforts to halt the march of terrorism to our shores.

Sorry to take down the curtain and remove the blinders from your eyes but it was the Clinton Administration that first identified bin Laden and actually tried to take him out. The republicans are the ones that belittled his efforts claiming that he did it to change the discussion from his affair. In fact they belittled him just like you are belittling him. Coincidence? I think not.

John McCain has no record whatsoever of telling the Clinton Administration that it wasn't doing it's job. In fact chances are that McCain supported Clinton's efforts.

It is George Bush and his surrogate McCain that were asleep at the wheel concerning terrorism. They are the ones that pulled an Obama, not holding a single meeting on the subject until it was too late. And you sure didn't hear McCain raising a stink about it.

I realize that facts are flexible with you folks but at least have the intelligence to present an argument that is plausible in Bizzaro world if nowhere else.
