Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

In a shockingly stupid move, Howie Klien of Blue America PAC, announces an endorsement of Naderism:

He went back and asked Foust some probing questions, thought it over and decided to jump back in the race. But not as a Democrat. He reregistered as an unaffiliated independent and that's how he'll appear on the ballot in 2008. A firm believer in accountability, Steve is a hawk on impeaching Bush and Cheney. He told me that:

"From the moment Pelosi took impeachment off the table, I knew there was no difference between the parties and that the Democrats would only posture and feign opposition which they knew would never amount to anything. In the end they gave George Bush absolutely everything he's asked for... [It] is a calculated strategy to win greater gains in 2008... using the lives of our kids in Iraq- and the lives of innocent Iraqi civilians- for political purposes."

Steve isn't running for Congress as part of a career move. He is serious about the issues- more serious than almost anyone I have ever talked to. When he says he wants to end the occupation of Iraq now, he means "end" and he means "now" and he means them in plain unnuanced English- English even George Bush and Rahm Emanuel can understand. Thursday he spent the day doing interviews at newspapers and television stations across PA-03 explaining why he is running again and why he has decided to eschew the baggage of the two Inside the Beltway political establishments.

This is utter nonsense through and through. Impeachment is a terrible strategy which will do nothing about any issue. It has no chance of success. But that is the least of it. Let Dr. Porter run in a Democratic primary and try to win with his ideas in such a primary. An independent candidacy, coupled with Porter's nonsensical rhetoric, is pure Naderism. It is a vanity, egotistical, stupid and wrong.

Why are Blue America and FireDogLake endorsing Naderism? At this point, I urge anyone inclined to contribute to the Blue America PAC to reconsider and not. This action is inexcusable.

Update [2007-8-19 13:45:57 by Big Tent Democrat]:Booman ciriticizes this move as well, but for the wrong reasons in my opinion:
There is only one problem. Kyle Foust isn't the only Democrat running for the nomination to take on Phil English. Mike Waltner is in the race. Mike Waltner went to Yearly Kos. Mike Waltner is pro-choice and pro-gay marriage. Mike Waltner is for single-payer health care. Mike Waltner has this to say about Iraq.
It's great that Mike Waltner is in the Dem racebut the real issue s WHY is Porter NOT in the race Dem race? That is the real issue. Why is FDL/Blue America endorsing Naderisism?

Re: Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

This has to be the stupidest thing I have seen in a while.

What is Howie Klein thinking? What is FDL thinking?

If Porter cannot win a Democratic primary, he surely cannot win a General Election. His only role will be to help Republicans.

Re: Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

I hear what you are saying, but how does your statement then apply to someone like Bernie Sanders, a self-identified Socialist, who is one of the most progressive voices in the Senate? Frankly, Dr. Porter's issue--a legitimate one, IMO--is that with Rahm Emmanuel setting the terms of who receives money from the DCCC, the Blue Dogs are being favored.

In the last election cycle, Rahm stated that unless a candidate could raise $350,000 on their own at the outset, the DCCC wouldn't hop on the bandwagon. Consequently, the DCCC never supported the excellent Shea-Porter in NH, for example, nor did they help out Dan Seals, in IL-10, against Mark Kirk, until it was too late to do any good. Meanwhile, Rahm dumped millions into the Tammy Duckworth race when she never really had a good shot.

Bottom line, my guess is that someone like Porter could do a Jeffords and switch parties after winning. Sure, it would be great if he could win the primary as a Dem, but Emmanuel has really stacked the deck against grassroots candidates. Unless you can figure out how to change that, you might want to cut Howie Klein, Porter, and possibly others, some slack.

It doesn't

Sanders was the Dem supported candidate in that race.

If he chose to run in a Dme primary, he would have won easily. There in eseence, was no race to be the Dem nominee in that race because Sanders WAS that person.

Porter is NOT. Porter is Nader here.

He had an arrangement with Schumer

he DID run in the Democratic primary (and won), but didn't accept the nomination. See here.:

State Democratic leaders are spearheading efforts to gather signatures to put Sanders on the ballot as a Democrat, even though Sanders has repeatedly said he would turn down the party's nomination if he wins the primary

It was a way of saying

"You're right; here's why."

Re: Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

Is this a symbolic move or is there a realistic chance a Dem could win this seat?  Why raise funds for an independent where a Dem is likely to be in the race?

Re: Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

This is a winnable seat. It was about 50/50 on the Presidential level in 2000 and 2004. Stooopid purity fanatics.

FYI

In case it's not clear, this refers to PA-03 with English-(R), the incumbent, a top DCCC target.

Re: FYI

It is not clear of course but it is not really my point.

It could be any race IN THE COUNTRY. Endorsing Naderism is wrong everywhere.

You mean the Far Stupid faction

Being Far Left has nothing to do with it imo.

Agreed.

Re: You mean the Far Stupid faction

Pure speculation on my part (but what else are blogs for?). This is about sticking it to Van Hollen.

As far as I can tell, Porter's run twice against English as a Democrat, losing both times with 40% (2004)/42%(2006) of the vote.

My speculation is that Van Hollen/DCCC may view this as a Cegalis-type situation and is looking to back another horse. Klein/Porter are trying to throw a wrench into the fan.

Re: Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

The far left should run independent candidates for every House and Senate seat in 2008 that would really teach those Republicans a thing or two you know....

Far Stupid not

Far Left.

Re: Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

Well, since this is a democracy, I'm not sure what the logic of this diary is.  If Porter's rhetoric is "nonsensical," then won't he simply be a non-factor among voters?  And if he's not, then why couldn't the other candidates earn those votes?

It's always struck me a ridiculously cynical to blame people for running for office.

Re: Blue America PAC/FDL Endorse Naderism

I am blaming Blue America, not Norton.

Please reread the post. You clearly did not understand it.
