Many more House Districts now have Democratic candidates.

In less than 15 months the midterms will be upon us.
In 2006 we fielded candidates in 425 districts and in 2008 candidates in 421.

How will we go in 2010?

Since my last update many more intrepid Democrats stepped up to run in Republican held Districts.

So we now have candidate in 348 House Districts, 3 Districts with candidates considering their options and 2 with rumoured candidates.
In this stage in 2007 we had candidates in about 359 Districts but we do now hold 21 more districts. All things considered not a bad position to be in.

Whilst at this stage there is no real cause for concern vis a vis candidate recruitment, so much more remains to be done.

On the upside we already have a full slate in 23 states - Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont & West Virginia.

We also have only 1 district to fill in 8 states - Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

On the other hand however Texas is a problem for us as it has been for the last two cycles with 13 Districts still to fill, and 5 weeks to close of filings (January 4th). So too do we have far too many vancancies in California we do already have candidates in a number of Republican districts here.

And to finish well done to the Illinois Democratic Party who managed to muster a full complement of candidates before filing closed earlier ths month.

Any news, gossip or thoughts in the comments please.

I was going to e-mail you about IA-04

but you got the news already. I met our candidate, Bill Maske, at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner last weekend.

We also seem to have a contested Democratic primary coming in IA-05, which surprises me, since King's district is something of a hopeless cause. Attorney Matt Campbell has put up a campaign website for this race. He joins Mike Denklau, who has already started campaigning.

Re: Many more House Districts

So we are about 10 ahead of last cycle, which is good news. I wonder, have you read anything on the Republican side of their recruiting?  I would bet they get high numbers this cycle.

I think you are right

There will be contested Republican primaries in IA-02 and IA-03, and they have a candidate already in IA-01, even though Braley stomped all over the competition last year.

It seems to be a good recruiting environment for the GOP now.

in the past

I would have been very excited by this news.  But my "pro-choice" blue dog congressman in my mostly republican district has said he will not vote for HCR withOUT the stupak amendment.  And the next guy over in an overwhelmingly democratic and pro-choice district said the same.  They both bragged about how the Catholic Bishops stepped in and urged them to vote for the amendment.
Now we have the blue dogs in charge of the DNC and the White house and I am not sure why I should give a flying you know what about democrats being in charge.

Do you have a break down as to how many of these new candidates are women?  Might give me something to care about.

Re: more House Districts have Democrats
RE OH-02
Jean Schmidt (R) current incumbent.
Recently the best and most viable Democratic candidate, Todd Book, dropped out.
We are left with David Krikorian, who ran as a "conservative businessman" independent in '06. He is unacceptable as a Democratic candidate, in my view, but apparently the local Dem establishment is going along with him, probably unable to recruit anyone else.
I won't be voting for Krikorian nor Schmidt.
