How The West Was Won... And Lost

PictureMail(Proudly cross-posted at C4O)

This week has been nothing short of amazing! Barack Obama will be our next President. More and better Democrats will be going to Congress. The electoral map has undergone a major blue shift.

So why has this whole experience been bittersweet at best for me? Well, all is not well in my own home state. So what can we celebrate and what must we fix? Let me share with you the story of this election from behind the scenes.

Nvd9

First off, let's start with the bad news. We lost in California. But wait, you ask, didn't Obama win by about 24%? Isn't that good? Of course it is, and that isn't the problem.

The problem in California is that Barack Obama had hardly any coattails here. Look at how Prop 8, the marriage ban, may end up having to be stopped at the courts (again, hopefully). Look at how, barring the results in CA-44 & CA-04 changing in the provisional vote count, we have not gained any new Congressional seats. Look at how we're still short of a 2/3 supermajority in both houses of the state legislature.

Simply put, we failed our mission in The Golden State. There were hundreds of thousands of "undervotes" here, meaning that people voted Obama for President but did NOT continue downballot to vote on Congress, the initiatives, and local races. This is nothing short of tragic, and there's no excuse for the nation's biggest Blue State to still show so much red! Because of the inept and disastrous "leadership" of the state party, the refusal of the DCCC to invest in real races like CA-44 & CA-46, and the horribly gawd-awful "leadership" by The Task Force & Equality California on the No on 8 campaign & their failure to have a real ground game, we missed the opportunity to turn the Obama victory into a progressive victory in California.

Now contrast what happened in California on Tuesday to what happened in Nevada on the same day. While one state didn't change much, the other state next door underwent a massive transformation! Like Mountain West neighbors New Mexico & Colorado, Nevada is now officially a Blue State! And not just that, but Democrats now have a broad and clear mandate for progressive change.

Progressive Democrat Dina Titus was elected to Congress in a "swing district" that Bush won in 2004. Democrats now control both houses in the state legislature for the first time since 1991, including a 2/3 supermajority in the Assembly. Voters approved a good initiative that will actually help Nevada fully fund its schools. And of course, Barack Obama won the ex-Red State by a whopping 12%, including an 18% win in Clark County (Las Vegas Metro) and wins in the formerly Republican Carson City & Washoe (Reno) Counties!

So why were the results in Nevada so dramatically different? Let's see, Harry Reid and the state party leaders actually began early in registering more Democrats and building an aggressive field operation while the GOP was power drunk and asleep at the wheel. The Obama campaign and the state party were effective in coordinating with the Dina Titus campaign, the Jill Derby campaign up north, and the local campaigns. All the candidates up and down the ballot had a clear and consistent message for change more. economy, energy & environment, education, health care, and so much more. Basically, Democrats worked together on the ground and that's why we won!

So what lessons can we learn from this tale of two states? First off, there's no real substitute for a grassroots door-to-door, face-to-face campaign. Despite the good last-minute ads, they may have been too little & too late to make up for the lack of a ground game for No on 8 in California. Meanwhile in Nevada, no amount of negative attack ads from the Republicans against Dina Titus & Barack Obama could make up for their complete lack of a ground game while we Democrats truly rocked the vote!
OSecondly, Nevada Democrats succeeded in translating an Obama victory into a progressive victory while California Democrats were simply lost in translation. Why couldn't we win the 45th & 48th Congressional Districts when Obama carried them? Why couldn't Debbie Cook win in the 46th when Obama carried it? Why were there so many undervotes statewide? Whatever the Nevada Democratic Party did right, the California Democratic Party needs to learn how to do it.

And finally, we should all be of good cheer! The West is ours if we want it! The results across the region prove that where Democrats work, Democrats win. But in places like California where state party leaders grew complacent, we lost out on real opportunities.

So what do we do next? After we're done celebrating, we will go back to work! We have more work to do to keep progress going, so let's do it! :-D

Re: Tips? Flames? Suggestions?

Thanks for all your hard work. The Titus win is going to be very good for Nevada.

California Democrats are just going to have to keep working hard. There's a lot of ground to cover and very different demographics in different areas. Looks like you're not going to get that much needed rest after all.

Re: How The West Was Won... And Lost

The difference is alos in state party organizations. The Democratic parties in AZ, NV, Co and MT are lean, efficient, smart and hungry. The CA Democratic Party, as an organization is a fat, lazy corrupt joke. I hope President Obama replaces Art Torres.

I don't know anything about California politics, so forgive my ignorance, but I was thinking the same thing.
The California Democratic party seems kind of apathetic at best, counting on votes without going out and doing the groundwork.
Being a farmer, I was e-mailing back and forth with a friend about the other prop (#2) that was passed about chickens and pig housing. It passed with 63% for, and 37% against.
Great, I said, they protect freaking chickens and throw gay rights under the bus. That is seriously screwed up.

Yep, yep, yep...

So should I gain 300 pounds, paint myself black & white, & learn how to moo in order to be treated with dignity? Seriously, California has become a national embarrassment.

Well, our two hopes...

At this point are:

- That the 3 million uncounted ballots break our way about 60/40 once counted.

- That the courts toss this out in the same manner they threw out the anti-immigrant Prop 187 in 1995.

There's a small chance the first scenario can happen. There's even a better chance that the second scenario will happen, as such drastic changes to the Constitution can NOT be made via ballot initiative. So I guess we'll have to wait & see. But in the mean time, I'm looking at condos for sale in Las Vegas. ;-)

Re: Well, our two hopes...

There are some real bargains in Vegas right now- a friend in the Air Force out there just bought a 2 year old house (never been lived in) for  little more than half the orignial asking price.

Right on, Randy!

The CDP is in need of MAJOR CHANGE! There's no reason whatsoever for such dismal results downballot with Obama winning by 24%! That's simply unforgivable. So who's running to replace Torres? And more importantly, who should we support?

I want Christine Pelosi.

For CDP chair, that is.

Big difference

I moved from Santa Clara CA to Littleton CO (Arapahoe County) a little over two years ago and it's true, it's night and day.  Part of being a Democrat here is being part of a highly organized and effective machine that is turning this state blue.  Grassroots organization is incredible.  But there's also an assumption of straight ticket voting and taking ballot initiatives seriously.  All I ever did in CA was give money.

Props 4 and 8

Did anyone else notice that Prop 4 failed while Prop 8 passed? That means there are people who voted to protect the right of teen girls to get an abortion while taking away the rights of gays to marry. I voted no one both, but you would THINK that abortion would be more troubling to the moral conscience than a gay couple getting married.

Re: Props 4 and 8

That's just because we've voted on the parental notification issue so many times in California that Californians are already aware of it and have formed their opinions on the matter. This is third time a parental notification initiative has been on the ballot since 2005, and probably the 10th time in my memory. As a result, the political network to oppose 4 was very well established and already has a well-formulated, winning message (I think I saw a No commercial that also ran last time this was on our ballot.)

And don't forget...

That Planned Parenthood PAC knows how to run campaigns! Dammit, if only they could have also run the No on 8 campaign... I'm sure it would have lost. At least they know how to run a ground game. I was just horrified by the way The Task Force & Equality California were f*cking up No on 8 royally. No one should EVER allow them near any political campaign ever again!

Re: And don't forget...

I agree with you, on both counts.  There's no way we should have lost on 8.  How tragic and sad.

Re: How The West Was Won... And Lost

Obama's coattails gave us Prop 8 here in California. We lost the CR #50 and 1 in 6 democrats who voted for Obama also voted for Prop 8. Lots of gays and lesbians feeling used at this juncture. All I have to say to those African Americans who backed it is that they are a bunch of hypocrites.

No on 8 - Major Blunders

The biggest blunder I saw from the No on 8 campaign was where they placed their TV advertising. I watch a lot of sports on TV, and a lot of Bravo.

I saw a ton of No on 8 commercials on Bravo. Everytime I saw one I said, "Why are they wasting their money advertising on Bravo. Everyone who watches this channel is already against 8".

I saw zero No on 8 commercials on Fox Sports Net or ESPN -- the channels that the people who may not naturally be inclined to vote No on 8 might actually watch.

I also got very scared when I talked to my mom a few days before the election. She lives in L.A. in a liberal area. I asked her if the sign wars were in full swing as they are in my small county that voted No on 8. She responded, "What sign wars?" and I immediately knew that all of the signs and awareness in my little town were not going to do a thing if the millions of people in L.A. were not energized about this issue.

Who was running that campaign?

My city of Aliso Viejo

went to Obama 53% to 45% McCain!  Aliso Viejo voted down Prop 8 and Prop 4!

Andrew, we have a potentially blue city in SOUTH COUNTY!

Re: My city of Aliso Viejo

Didn't y'all also have a Democratic candidate for State Senate also get over 40% of the vote? And far beyond the former "Orange Curtain"!

Re: My city of Aliso Viejo

Well, the candidate in the 35th, Ginny Mayer also broke 40% as well as the Congressional candidate.  SO I am thinking we all ran decent races!

Gary walked a lot in Aliso Viejo though, I think that's what made the difference in our home town.

What's "potential"?

I'm already seeing a Blue City being made! So will Mr. Ellinorianne run for Aliso Viejo City Council? I think the city council needs to catch up with the thinking of the populace. ;-)
