The Final Word On Georgia's Senate Race

"This isn't about anything but winning."

[Source:  Insider Advantage Georgia, "Re-Tooled Campaign Put Chambliss Over The Top", December 3, 2008]

That six-word sentence attributed to Republican National Committee member and former head of the Georgia Republican Party Alec Poitevint says it all about Saxby Chambliss' successful re-election campaign.

Chambliss, the GOP and their allies didn't care how nasty they had to get or what they had to do so long as their team got the most votes at the end of election day (and trust me, here in Georgia, the ads run against Democrat Jim Martin called him everything but a child of God).

The motto and mantra of Saxby's campaign seemed to be "Just Win, Baby," and win is what they did.

Re: The Final Word On Georgia's Senate Race

It was a longshot. As much as I'd like to believe tgat a groundswell of grassroots Dems and disaffected republicans/independents could've put Martin over the top, a la Tester, we should always remember this is Georgia.

It's probable that only historic turnout by black voters in November kept the race that competitive. Otherwise, it would've ended up on Nov. 4 like the McConnell/Lunsford race--a margin much closer than anyone ever would've expected, but not a truly close race.

Without the excitement and turnout of a presidential election, a state like Georgia will revert to form: solidly republican.

I wish Obama had really gotten involved in this, but I guess I can grudgingly understand why he stayed away and focused on his transition. I just hope it's not a sign that he won't aggressively campaign with future Dem candidates because it's too "partisan" or "old politics."

I like your historical perspective.

I dont think Obama campaigning would have helped. All it would have done was make it close.

Re: The Final Word On Georgia's Senate Race

People need to remember that Martin Underperformed Obama on November 4.   The conventional Wisdom was that Martin would Overperform Obama as Voters would support Bush but then vote for Martin.   That if Obama could keep Georgia closer than the last 3 elections Martin would have a chance.

That did not happen.

In fact it seems that some Obama voters went Libertarian for Senate on November 4.

The truth is that all Obama voters were not on-board with Martin, so Obama could not have helped that much.
