An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Dear Friend:

I am writing to tell you about my friend, Hillary Clinton, and why I am standing with her in her campaign for the presidency.  I know the kind of president Hillary Clinton will be because I know the person she is.

I am inspired by her courage and her honesty.  She is a reliable and trustworthy person.  She is someone I not only admire but one for whom I have profound affection.

Hillary does not waver in standing up for those who need a champion.  She has always been a passionate protector of families.  As a child, she was taught that all God's children are equal, and as a mother, she understood that her child wasn't safe unless all children were safe.  As I wrote about Hillary recently in a praise song: "She is the prayer of every woman, and every man who longs for fair play, healthy families, good schools and a balanced economy."

It may be easy to view Hillary Clinton through the narrow lens of those who would write her off or grind her down.  Hillary sees us as we are, black and brown and white and yellow and pink and relishes our differences knowing that fundamentally we are all more alike than we are unalike.  She is able to look through complexion and see community.

She has endured great scrutiny, and still she dares greatly.  Hillary Clinton will not give up on you, and all she asks is that you do not give up on her.  She is a long-distance runner.  I am honored to say I am with her for the long run.

I am supporting Hillary Clinton because I know that she will make the most positive difference in people's lives and she will help our country become what it can be.  Whether you are her supporter, leaning towards her, undecided, or supporting someone else, I believe Hillary Clinton will represent you - she will be a president for all Americans.  It is no small thing that along the way we will make history together.

Vote for Hillary Clinton and show your support at www.hillaryclinton.com. I know she will make us proud.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Hillary Clinton is an amazing woman who has lived an extraordinary life of public service.  People that smear her know nothing about her but Republican lies.  She has many, many devoted followers who will never give up on her.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Wow! I didn't even know Maya Angelou was senile. She writes that Hillary Clinton is honest, trustworthy, and courageous. Hmmmm.... Hillary must have told her about the time she went on a weekend mission in Bosnia.

Thanks for the ugliness in a positive diary.  Your discourse is so elevated!

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

I find it best to stay out of troll-rating or things like that, I like to stick to Mojo rating, but this is terrible.

I support Obama, but I think it is great when people support their candidate in positive ways.

Dr. Angelou wrote why she is supporting Clinton, didn't take any potshots at any one in our party.

She should be respected not insulted with "senile"

It is unacceptable to me when I get called a cultists due to the candidate I support, and it is 100% to insult such an accomplished American for her commitment to her candidate.

Uncool on so many levels.

Dr. Angelou may have chosen a different candidate to back than I have, but she states her support beautifully and thoughtfully, even if I disagree with her.  It in no way diminishes my regard for her, and it is far, far over the line to call her "senile" for it.

Have yerself a donut.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou is so far over the heads of some of the pathetic people on this site(such as the one I am attempting to reply to- ) People who probably don't know anything about who she is or what she has done.

I confess I was a little nervous clicking on this diary, because I've been an Angelou fan for yrs & didn't know which candidate she was supporting.
I am heartened that she too is for Hillary...& says so eloquently...unlike the handful of maladapts who have to push their preference no matter what.

I was privileged to see Dr. Angelou in public several years ago, & she was - & remains - remarkable.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Well done by Maya Angelou. I would prefer that she support Obama, but still, nice that she cares and is getting involved.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

I love and respect Dr. Maya Angelou and what she stands for.  I use to have that same respect for Hillary and Bill Clinton too. Hillary and Bill have both taken a nasty page book from George Bush and the Republicans. Now they lie everytime they speak. I am disappointed in their behavior and beg to differ with the great Dr. Angelou.  I hope Bill and Hillary return to their roots soon. Right now my love for them is on hold until they change their ways for the better.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Is Maya involved now or in the past with Politics/Issues.

Im being serious,  Im not that old (28) and my only memory was her reciting her poetry (which I remember fondly) back in the early 90's.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Yes. A lifetime of activism. Here's a snippet from her Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_Angelo u):

From 1959 to 1960, Angelou held the position of Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In the early 1960s, Angelou briefly lived with South African freedom fighter Vusumi Make, and moved with him and her son Guy to Cairo, Egypt, where she became an associate editor at the weekly newspaper The Arab Observer....

...Angelou became close friends with Malcolm X in Ghana and returned to America in 1964 to help him build a new civil rights organization, the Organization of African American Unity.

Is that activist enough for you?

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Honest, trustworthy, and reliable. Hillary's speach writers must be ghost writing for Dr. Angelou

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

Knock it off.

Why are you going to pee on their parade.  Angelou supports Clinton.

She deserves a little respect even if you disagree with her.

I didn't find anything in her endorsement to be out of the norm for that type of thing.

My posting was made as a response to one of JS's several derogatory comments. I wish the 'reply to' function on this site actually worked properly.

Learn how to use the computer, I've been on this site 3 days and the "reply to" works just fine.

Re: An Open Letter from Dr. Maya Angelou

I just don't understand how someone as intelligent and respected as Dr. Angelou, can call Hillary Clinton trustworthy, honest, and reliable. The only reliability in Mrs. Clinton is that we can rely on her to misspeak about two to three times a week. And if Dr. Angelou doesn't see that, then I feel sorry for her. By the way , I think the word misspoke was copyrighted by the Clintons.

HR'ed. This is a positive thread and bashing a progressive doesn't cut it on here.

I love the way she turns a phrase:

"She has endured great scrutiny, and still she dares greatly."

Thank you Ms. Maya!  You are the best.
