This One's For the Girls - For My Little Girl (Updated)

I've written about my son a few times over the past year, and of how Hillary has my undying gratitude for her work on behalf of children with special needs.  Well this one's for my little girl...

Over the past few weeks I've been stepping up my efforts to raise money for Hillary's campaign via my HillRaisers link, and it's been going pretty well.  The folks here among the Net Roots are incredibly generous and Hillary's got some amazing backers on this and other discussion boards and blogs.  In increments of $10, $20, $50 and even one or two $1,000+ donations, Hillary's online supporters have stepped up to the plate when it counts.  Because of our joint efforts, I've raised just shy of the $20,000 mark and I'm not letting up until she wins this thing in November.

Because of this I'll get to attend an event here in DC this week with Hillary - along with about 1000 other folks but the point is, I'm going to get to hear her speak and I can't wait.  I'll also get to bring a guest and since it's tough fur hubby to get time off work in the middle of the week, I'm going to take my little girl with me to hear Hillary speak.  She's a huge fan and has been a great help with our efforts on the local level, and I can't think of a better event for her to attend.  This will be held in a conference center rather than a stadium or rally with bleachers - so she'll get to actually hear what's said and in a much calmer setting.  She'll actually get to see what's going on too.

Now I'm a relative nobody as far as this gargantuan effort to elect our next President goes.  There are literally thousands upon thousands of people working tirelessly to help Hillary make it to the Oval Office.  As someone who works full time and just posts to blogs in the evenings, volunteers on the local level and does some phone banking, the thought of hearing Hillary speak and maybe meeting some of the folks who actually get to work with her is pretty exciting stuff.

But I had to make a choice regarding this event.  The upside in bringing my daughter is pretty obvious - she'll get to hear Hillary (hopefully our next President) speak.  This is something she'll remember for the rest of her life.  But the downside is, I'll be so busy with her that it won't leave a lot of time for me to meet people from the campaign or Hillary's many other supporters at this event.

A day my daughter will never forget - or a chance to network?  Hmmm... tough choice - not!

As much as I want to develop a network of new contacts in that arena, I'm a mom first and my little girl needs to be at this event.  It's something she'll never forget and hearing Hillary speak will (hopefully) set her on a path of good solid Democratic values (peace, the environment, helping others...) that will stay with her the rest of her life.  Things like this will help instill a social conscience in my little girl that will help her become the woman I hope she'll be some day.  I get the sense that Hillary is just that powerful a speaker when you see her in real life.

This will also continue a family tradition started by my own mother.  I took a road trip to Chicago with my mom to lobby for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment when I was a kid.  I also walked Farmworker picket lines at the local A & P and went to anti-war rallies with my folks when I was a little older than my daughter is now.  We have pictures of some pretty cool people in our family photo album too like Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden and Holly Near, and my stepdad was Cesar Chavez's bodyguard whenever he came to the mid-west.

We're already off to a great start with our own kids.  They've been to rallies to call for an end to the genocide in Darfur, Earth Day events, Million Mom Marches and pro-choice marches, and my little girl has already led her own anti-Bush march around the tot-lot at the tender age of 4 (chanting "hey hey! Ho ho! Bush & Cheney have GOT to go!).  It'd be wonderful to take her to hear Hillary speak, and maybe take a picture or two of Hillary - if we're sitting close enough.

My sweet girl is still pretty young and could get a bit cranky or tired at this event.  But some friends of mine passed up the chance to take their daughters or granddaughters to hear Hillary speak because they were worried they were too young - and they're regretting it now. I just can't imagine passing up this chance for her to hear her hero speak - and possibly shake her hand.

I'm suddenly flashing on that picture of Bill Clinton, when he attended that Boy's Nation event at the White House and got to shake JFK's hand (the year after I was born).  This could be the start of great things for my bright and amazing girl.  Perhaps one future president meeting another?  Who knows?  Now, thanks to Hillary the sky's the limit for my daughter and millions of other girls and women just like her.  With more hard work Hillary may just shatter that last and toughest of glass ceilings this November.

Who knows?  When Hillary runs for re-election in 4 years I could take my son to hear her speak too!

And thirty years from now... I could be on the campaign trail working to help elect my own daughter to the White House.

For now though, This One's For the Girls

Hey gang - I'm just $500 shy of the big two-oh-oh-oh-oh mark.  Help me break $20,000 by the time my little girl and I sign in for this event Wednesday afternoon ok?  Thanks!

FOR THE GIRLS!  Aww heck - for ALL of us!

U P D A T E

Hat tip to dBrown04 for this idea...

TO ALL YOU MOMs AND DAUGHTERS OUT THERE - Despite Hillary's non-stop effort over the past 15 months to meet as many of us as she can, there are a lot of moms and daughters who'll never get to shake Hillary's hand or hear her speak in person.

So please - Feel free to leave a message for Hillary here and we can always send a link to this diary to the campaign. She just might get to read your message.

HELP HILLARY FIGHT ON - CONTRIBUTE NOW!

This Obama supporter is glad you're taking your child.

Thanks for a good diary about political involvement, no matter who one supports.

WOw - thanks :)

She's already a tree-hugger there's no doubt about it.  Events like this should help to nurture her understanding of wny Mommy and Daddy (and her grandparents, aunts & uncles) are Democrats.

Re: This One's For the Girls - For My Little Girl

I still remember leaving New Hampshire struck not by the organization or intelligence of Obama supporters, but rather by the kindness.

Which caused a fairly sappy, embarrassing quote in a news article, but that's a different story...

Mojo for good diary.... and once you reach your $20,000 goal and you and your daughter attend the event  I think it would be cool for a follow up diary about the event

Re: This One's For the Girls - For My Little Girl

Wonderful diary, Alegre.  I took my daughter to see President Clinton when she was 5.  (She's 21 now).  I'm sure your daughter will remember.

Both Hillary and Barack are great role models for people who traditionally have been excluded from political power in our nation.

Wow.  Thank you for showing us the difference between your candidate's followers, and me and Hillary's other supporters.

Re: This One's For the Girls - For My Little Girl

?  Your candidate said this kind of thing.  Not just you guys.  Your candidate played up the "Obama as the Messiah" narrative.  Then I point out that this diary is not about a great candidate, but about a personality you greatly admire- it is biographical, and largely based on gender (not that there is anything inherently wrong with that) and I'm a bad guy?

I was simply indicating the ridiculousness of that Clinton-supported narrative that often ends up on this site.

Re: This One's For the Girls - For My Little Girl

You could have expressed that more clearly with the first comment, which came off much less constructively then this one.

I could have.  But sometimes I think the short and snarky are necessary.  They are often what get read.

By the way, alegre, here is a link to a post where you re-iterate the very talking point I was alluding to http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/4/26/2137 /10542

I apologize
you are not an awful person, I know nothing about you. Your comment, however, was not meant to do anything other than make someone else feel bad in an otherwise positive diary.

Re: Rise above then

In all fairness I did use messiah in the title of a recent post.

I still take issue with my post about taking my daughter to hear Hillary speak being used to leave a rude comment about a cult of personality.  My diary in no way comes off  like that and if the commenter had bothered to read what I wrote, he would have (possibly) understood just how out of line their comment was.

by alegre 2008-05-05 06:58PM | 0 recs
Re: Rise above then

I am puzzled by the notion of it being "out of line."  I may have been wrong.  Maybe you aren't really invested in Hillary the person (as opposed to Hillary the candidate).  It just seemed that way to me.  So I was using this as an opportunity to use satire as commentary.  I'm sorry if you felt it was personally aggressive.  It was just meant to be a snarky sort of commentary.

by proseandpromise 2008-05-05 07:06PM | 0 recs
Re: Rise above then

And my point is that it didn't sound like commentary - it sounded like unproductive snarkery.

by Falsehood 2008-05-05 07:43PM | 0 recs
Re: Rise above then

Fair enough. Just pay a little more attention to the subject of the diary next time eh?

I was writing about my littel girl tonight.  Try to show a little more consideration from here on out - snark and folks' kids really don't mix - ya know?

by alegre 2008-05-05 08:44PM | 0 recs
Hillary Clinton is just as much the subject

of this diary as your child is.  nobody would say anything if you just wrote a diary about your daughter.  If you're going to use your child to make a political point, you can't turn around and use your child as a rhetorical bludgeon against anyone who takes issue with your political argument.

by JJE 2008-05-05 10:15PM | 0 recs
Re: Hillary Clinton is just as much the subject

Ummm... I didn't use my child to make any point.  I'm taking her to hear a woman she admires a great deal speak - period.  She's helped me in volunteering on the campaign as has my son.  She wants to go hear Hillary speak - is excited about this event tomorrow night.

She's my daughter.  This is my diary.  If you don't like how I've presented all this then I think you know where the door is.

by alegre 2008-05-06 04:27PM | 0 recs
It's just felt jarringly inappropriate in

a diary pretty filled with positive comments from supporters of both D candidates. Why the need to ruin something good? It seems petty and mean spirited-maybe that's not who you really are but that's who you appear to be here.

Re: This One's For the Girls - For My Little Girl

I gotta admit.i wouldn't rain on alegre's parade in tbis diary. She will give us plenty of opportunities to do so in her other diaries. But you got a point. She and other Hillary supporters have been dismissive of the Obama cult of personality in the past. AS Rev Wright paraphrased Malcolm X, the chickens are coming home to roost.

I'm glad

Your little girl will get to grow up with a Democrat in the White House who will look out for her rights and try to give her prosperity and opportunity.

Yes, we can.  Together.  I applaud your fundraising efforts for Clinton, and I'm glad to recommend this positive diary.

For your little girl, we need to make sure that whichever Democrat is nominated, that we win the presidency this time around.  The stakes are just too high to let the warmongers win.

Re: I'm glad

Thanks - and you're right on.  We soooo need to get a Dem back into the White House.

My daughter was born a few days after Bill left the White House - sadly she went 9 days past her due date or she would have been born under a Democratic administration.  She's never known a competent government or a kind leader - she deserves better and so do the rest of us.

I wouldn't put too much stock in who was President when she was born - instead, focus on having the best president while she becomes aware of the world.

Give her the best world to grow up in. We do what we do not just for ourselves, but for our children and their children, just as our forebears fought for out better lives.

This is my wife's video!!!

I was looking at diaries here on mydd and I noticed my wife's "This one's for the girls" video.  We are Hillary supporters here in Illinois so that makes us lower than pond scum around here.  My wife made this video to show the world why we are Hillary supporters.  We have a 2 year old daughter and we want her to realize that she can do anything.  Hillary inspires us and let's us believe that anything is possible for our daughter.  Thank you for the diary and posting my wife's video.  It means a lot to us.  (My wife says she is jealous because you get to go see Hillary live.  But, you did all the hard work raising money, so enjoy yourself.  Here in Illinois, we don't see many presidential candidates.  Heck, we don't even see Senator Obama because he thinks the world ends at the border of Chicago, so he doesn't make it downstate very often.)

What a beautiful diary!

I smiled all the time I was reading it.  You're so lucky to be able to bring your daughter to hear Hill speak.  I attended her rally at UCSB and only wish that I could have been there with my own daughter who is in La Jolla attending UC San Diego.  Women have waited a long time to be able to see "one of our own" run for President.  And Hillary has been an inspiration, not only for our daughters, but our sons too.  Enjoy the event, and take LOTS of photos!

Re: No

On the contrary, I think her success has shown how possible that is - remember that BOTH of them hav broken all sorts of records.

Either candidate's Q! haul last year would have upended the race completely. It's just that the other one managed to raise a lot as well.

Also, it's my hope that the first woman I support for President will be entirely self-made. I can't help but think of the message that you can't be president unless you marry one. No, I'm not trying to say anything like what Matthews said, and she gets the credit for her senate wins.

Does that make sense?

by Falsehood 2008-05-06 10:03AM | 0 recs
I think that she is winning

despite her husband.

At the end of the day though it's more important to me that we have the candidate with (a) the best chance of winning and (b) the best skillset to be President.   Hands down for me that's Hillary Clinton.

by activatedbybush 2008-05-06 02:16PM | 0 recs
Re: I think that she is winning

Without her husband, she would not have had a chance to even gain traction in this race. All that upfront frontrunner status was because of Bill.

Re: I think that she is winning

You seriously tell me if she was not married to Bill Clinton, she would ahve been the prohibitive frontrunenr at the beginning of the primary with her Iraq war blunder in 2008? Her Clinton connnection earned her enough benefit of doubt and people were able to look at her other accomplishments.

Let me say this clearly to you. I did not say she is unqualified. But you gotta have some kind of selling point to get to this level. Her public speaking was a disaster in the 90s. She improved a lot  in the last couple of years. All that bigwig funding she got was via Bill CLinton. Now did Bill's friends also hurt her cause with their antiquated thinking? Sure, at times.

I am not the one poutting out one turd diary after another when such entries would be more suitable on a Hillary.com website . We come here for discussion not blind cheerleading.

by Pravin 2008-05-06 04:45PM | 0 recs
Re: I think that she is winning

Alegre does more than blindly cheerlead - and your insults won't make it any easier for her to work for Obama if he comes out of this with the win.

I do say if, but only in the sense that the press might discover a secret Obama harem between now and Oregon. That would be interesting.

Mums and daughters on from mydd

Hey Alegre,

Any chance we can put together a message of mums and daughters from mydd for you to take with you?  When my 13-year old daughter and I went up to Maine for the caucuses, we held our hand-made sign "Mothers and daughters for Hillary," up high.

I told my 13 year old daughter that if Hillary is elected President, I'm going to DC to see her inaugurated.  My daughter was pretty quick to say, "Can I come too?"  "Absolutely," was my reply.  My eight-year old daughter is rooting for Hillary too.

I'm feeling a bit discouraged at this point.  So this event may be our only chance.  You're going to have to be there for all of us.

Re: This One's For the Girls - For My Little Girl

Alegre, What a sweet and beautiful diary tonight.  How lucky your little daughter is. You are absolutely right in taking her to see Hillary.  That will be something she can talk, brag, and be happy about all her life.  And who knows, you might even attract more interest with a little girl with you in networking.  Afterall, Hillary is known for her love of children and might not be able to pass up a chance to talk to her up close.

My New Hamshire moment

About 8 years ago, I was sitting in a department meeting in which we were discussing new hires.  I suggested recruiting a scholar with an expertise in the economics of children.  The men in my Department thought that was just about the dumbest idea they had ever heard.

The entire time that I was trying to defend the idea, they sat with their backs to me.  They didn't even have the common decency to turn around and argue to my face.

They just hammered away.  I could feel my eyes burning.  Eventually I just gave in.  I just couldn't keep my emotions under control.

Well, guess what?  The very next month in one of the top journals in economics an article appeared entitled, "Is Child Labor Efficient?"  Shortly thereafter, the National Bureau of Economic Research announced a new research rubric: The Economics of Children and Families.

So, recruiting an economist with an expertise in the economics of children wasn't so dumb after all.  Men can be slow sometimes.

When Hillary was hammered just before the New Hampshire primary for having emotions, it brought back my painful and embittering memory. I fell in behind her and I have not looked back.

Its been hard watching this campaign over the past couple of months.  But my two daughters, aged 13 and 8, feel as strongly as I do.  If Hillary wins, we're headed to DC for the inauguration.

Re: My New Hamshire moment

Just think of how much better off this world would be if all those men had listened to a few women along the way.

What a great story - thanks for posting it here tonight!

Re: My New Hamshire moment

Too bad Hillary was overly aware of her female status and tried to overcompensate when she acted all hawkish on the middle east. A lot of Iraqui women can thank Hillary for their misery.

Re: My New Hamshire moment

Go to hillary.com if you want to sing kumbaya with your fellow hillary supporters. Any diary you put up here is open game for any MYDDer. I refrained from raining on your party early on in this diary, but when I see self entitled comments about why other MYDDers are crashing in on some private positivity party, I gotta intervene. People like you have ruined this blog I used to enjoy coming to.

Re: My New Hamshire moment

You aren't alone in how New Hampshire made you feel - not in the slightest bit.

But I want to be honest - I don't like how you stereotyped men, and I'd like to ask how you'd feel if someone else had made a similar comment about women.

I know that race and sex have a role in some votes, but I'd like t think they don't have a role in my decision to support Obama.

All kinds of people can by slow sometimes - we're certainly not perfect.

My daughter, as a child, met HRC

while HRC visited Cornell, while I was a grad student there.  My wife and my daughter went to hear Hillary speak.  When she was meeting the crowd, she made a bee-line to meet my wife and daughter and to say hello -- (probably the only mother-daughter combo in a sea of undergrads...but hey...).

It inspired my daughter for years.  She is now at Wellesley, doing well.  Hillary did this for my daughter and dedicated her life to help countless less fortunate children for years -- how could I not believe in the presidential leadership of HRC?

Re: My daughter, as a child, met HRC

Oh wow - she's at Wellesley now?  That's really great. I'll send a link of this diary to the campaign - yours is a comment I hope Hillary gets to read.  I have to wonder if she understands just how inspiring she's been to so many of us over the years.  She's probably so busy getting the important work-a-day stuff done that she doesn't get much time to think about this really.

by alegre 2008-05-05 07:08PM | 0 recs
Indeed -- her campaign needs all her focus

and ours, as well.

Thank you for your kind words and your perseverance in Hillary's candidacy; it must have been so very trying at times.

Re: Indeed -- her campaign needs all her focus

I daresay it's fairly trying now - given that many believe a refusal to fall in line is a form of treason. Such people should take their cues from the  candidates.

We have a lot of time before November.

Re: Indeed -- her campaign needs all her focus

Hey I just follow Hillary's lead.  She always manages to stay upbeat and ready to tackle whatever comes next.  She's 15 years older than I am and keeping to a MUCH tougher schedule - if she can do it then so can I!

So now alegre alternates back and forth from ego-driven sappy testimonials about her personal life to low-level political smearing of Barack Obama and wantonly irrelevant cheerleading for Hillary.

I would say, take your daughter it is a great

event for her. She can see for herself that as a girl/woman, she could one day run and dream of becoming the president of the United States.

I am talking as a father of 2 young daughters, and although i support Senator Obama (my primary has passed already), i will be pretty happy if Senator Clinton pulled a victory because of my 2 precious daughters.

Thank you for a great diary!  Alegre.  I am sure you and your daughter will have a great time meeting Hillary. I am a scientist in my early 30's.  She inspires me greatly too!  I too have said to myself a few times: "if Hillary can keep it up with her schedule and her commitment, so can you!" -:)

Nice diary...

First diary of yours I actually enjoyed reading, alegre.  Sounds like it's going to be a great experience for your daughter and a lot of fun for you too.

I didn't really get into politics enough to attend a political event until I was an undergrad.  After the last few elections, I've learned how important it is for us all to get involved and become aware of the issues... The younger people can get involved in this process, the better.  Even if your daughter does get cranky, I think you're right, she'll remember this for the rest of her life.  Years from now she'll look back and appreciate it so much that you thought to take her.

As for your son, I'm doubtful he'll get to hear Hillary in four years unless she's stumping for Obama... but hearing Obama speak would be an inspiring experience for him too.

What do you have against men?

Or is it black men?

by IowaMike 2008-05-06 05:24AM | 0 recs
Not a thing. We just don't believe in Obama

as President.
However, he would make a fine VP - as would any qualified man or a qualified black man, for that matter.

So, what do you have against women? Or is it white women?

Re: Not a thing. We just don't believe in Obama

so, he's good enough to be one heart beat away, but not the head hauncho.

I have nothing against either one. My guy already lost. I just hope everyone follows the rules in the process, not try and change them after you agreed with them, and we have the nominee sooner rather than later.

I have an 8 year old daughter..

I would love, love, love to take her to hear Hillary speak.  I have talked extensively with her about this campaign and what it means to our country and to females in general.  When Hillary came to Seattle it was very last minute and on a school night so I couldn't take her with me.  I am hoping to have another chance during the GE!

Have a great time with your daughter - how cool that you guys are going to have that experience together.
