There have indeed been special elections since those numbers were correct. Texas Democrats picked up HD-48 in northwest Travis County, making it 86-64 in the Texas House.
Henry Cuellar is Hispanic too. The trick will be for Rodriguez to turn out the San Antonio and San Marcos neighborhoods to match the high voter turnout in Laredo, Cuellar's base.
There are only two states where actors are taken seriously enough at a statewide level, California and New York. That's due to large entertainment industries in those states. Everywhere else, an actor running for statewide office in his first campaign will come across as a sort of trust-fund baby with a sense of entitlement.
If Affleck wants to run for office, he should consider representing his district in the House. The biggest disadvantage of being a famous actor (media scrutiny) will be lessened by taking the race down the ballot and reducing the "sense of entitlement" gut feeling people will have. And the advantages, name recognition and money, will help more. Of course, he really should actually live in the district for a little while first, not just move there and run.
To retake the Senate. But because Kyl and Ensign seem like long shots to me at this point, I think it'll be really tough. I'm awfully encouraged about unseating DeWine and Burns given recent events, though.
I just made a contribution to Hackett's campaign through his ActBlue page. My first ever for a congressional candidate.
I really think that a strong showing in OH-02 will do a lot of psychological damage to Republicans. There may even be a few Republican Congressmen out there considering retirement or Democrats considering a run for higher office who might be prodded into action.
I'd love to know more about who we have to challenge DeWine. I remember since he only won in 1994 with 53% of the vote, there was a lot of talk in 2000 about DeWine's potential vulnerability. But that year, he beat Celeste handily 60-38. His seat is on Charlie Cook's list as Likely Republican, but his low approval rating and the Republican Coingate implosion should make him vulnerable to the right opponent. So who do we have?
Well, 8 out of the 12 Democratic state senators opposed the ammendment. They were, according to the Austin American Statesman: Democratic Sens. Gonzalo Barrientos of Austin, Rodney Ellis of Houston, Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa of McAllen, Eliot Shapleigh of El Paso, Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio, Royce West of Dallas, John Whitmire of Houston and Judith Zaffirini of Laredo. Only one, Barrientos, was from Austin.
Obviously 8 was not good enough to block the proposal, though. We needed 11.

Yeah... maybe we should start calling him "Landslide Henry"?

Great post. You're on fire today, Chris!

Quirk's exception: Intentional invocation of this so-called "Nazi Clause" is ineffectual.
