What the Gaza Freedom March accomplished: Vu Pensiero

The above video was produced as an afterthought to the Gaza Freedom March earlier this month to sum up its accomplishments, even though most of the 1,300 participants, who traveled to Cairo from 42 countries, never got a chance to enter Gaza. Most of the humanitarian aid driven across Europe and the Middle East in 200 or so trucks accompanied by roughly 400 activists from 14 countries, the British Viva Palestina aid convoy, however, did make it into Gaza, in spite of Egypt's obstacles.

The famous song heard in the Video, Va Pensiero, is by Giuseppe Verdi and was first performed in 1842 when the Northern part of Italy was under Austrian occupation just as Palestine is today. It is about the plight of the Jews, who were exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco.

The piece subsequently become a call for freedom for all occupied peoples around the world. Here it is dedicated to the Palestinian fight for freedom and independence.

Viva Palestina convoy breaks siege of Gaza

 Wednesday 6th January

Today Viva Palestina's third convoy of humanitarian aid from this British organization for the Gazan Palestinians entered Gaza after a long eventful trip, in which the Egyptian authorities attempted to block the convoy at every turn. The convoy had been on the road for a month, traveled through 10 countries to Aqaba, Jordan, was turned back to Syria, took a ship and several airplanes to El-Arish, Egypt, then fought with Egyptian riot police for a day before eventually being permitted entry into Gaza via the Rafah crossing.

The many obstacles imposed by Egypt made clear that Egypt was subjugating itself to the will of Israel and the United States. The Obama administration was silent throughout the ordeal.

Kevin Ovenden, the convoy leader, had these words to say:

"We are all emotional to see that all of Gaza are out to greet us! Our Viva Palestina convoy is symbolic! It shows the Palestianian people just how much the people of the West do care. We come in peace to deliver humanitarian aid and we hope that our convoy (and convoy's like ours) will help to build pressure on the Israeli government to break the siege."

An introduction to the Gaza Freedom March UPDATE

There is probably no better way to introduce the Gaza Freedom March now going on than through this article by the Australian peace activist Antony Loewenstein. Much has passed in the preparation of this international peace assault on Gaza, which is finally coming to fruition.

Jimmy Carter called the siege of Gaza "inhumane" and indeed it is. Everyday the siege kills babies, children, and medical patients while causing misery to the people of Gaza.

Who will save Gaza's children?

The LINK to the article below is to a British newspaper, the Guardian. We would never expect to read about this inhumane situation in the United States, because it would put Israel in a bad light, but also because Americans as a whole don't seem to care about Palestinians, even though that can be partly attributed to news censorship and pro-Israel propaganda.

Earlier this year, it was reported that over 300 children died in the Gaza massacre. But now we learn that the toll on children from Israel's siege is continuing in the form of rising infant deaths.
