The Georgia State Flag is Stupid

It is actually quite worse than stupid.  I have had a problem with Georgia's state flag for a long while now, but with Texas Governor Rick Perry talking about session lately I thought this a good time to actually write this article.

Progressive Democrat Newsletter Issue 210

This week the Right Wing seemed to be all about tea, or something. Which is odd because all I heard from them was whining. It should have been wine and cheese, not tea, because it was all whining and cheesy cliches that really are meaningless if you scratch the surface. It led the anti-America Texas governor to even suggest Texas might want to secede. He might want to study some American history (even though he seems to hate American democracy) and he might discover that secession is a dead end, and was something largely opposed by the likes of George Washington, James Madison and, in particular, Andrew Jackson. Isn't it really ironic that at least one of these secessionist wine and cheese...I mean "tea parties" was in front of a statue of Andrew Jackson when THIS is what Andrew Jackson had to say about secession in his "Proclamation to the People of South Carolina" during the nullification crisis:

THE TEXAS SECESSION

THE TEXAS SECESSION

Ever since Texas Governor Rick Perry suggested that his state might well secede in protest against oppressive federal policies, pundits have pointed out that secession has been discredited since the 1860's and that the agreement upon Texas' entry gave it no right to secede. (The agreement did give Texas the right to morph into five separate states, but no one wants that)

I say, let Texas secede. Not only would secession rid us of those annoying Dallas Cowboy fans and obnoxious politicians such as Tom Delay, but it would help with the illegal immigration problem.
Texas may well become once again part of Mexico, but even if not we no longer have to monitor that long southern Texas border. We'll find it easier to seal the border with Arkansas. And if Texans try to sneak across, they'll be easier to catch since they're larger and louder than Mexicans.

Perry Won't Say No To Secession

Yesterday, to gain some conservative cred and lay the foundation for support among the Texas grassroots for his 2010 re-election, Governor Rick Perry of Texas spoke to the teabaggers and during a Q&A seemed to put the secession of Texas on the table.

"Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that. My hope is that America and Washington in particular pays attention. We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

When asked to clarify, Perry issued a sort of denial that he okayed secession, claiming that all he said was the "we've got a great union" part. But then when asked point blank "do you really want to secede from the union" he didn't say "no." He literally wouldn't commit to remaining a part of the United States. Gee, I wonder why.

Glenn Beck on Fox News last night:

"I don't want to be too dramatic," Van Susteren said, "but it almost seems like Texas is looking to secede from the rest of the nation." Now there were cheers, applause and banner-waving."

Beck didn't disagree. He asked the cameras to get a shot of a large banner of the Texas flag with the words, "Texas Independence" on it. That prompted what were probably the loudest, longest cheers yet.

Bragging about how well he understands Texas (because he lived there for four years), Beck said, "These people love America (more cheers). They just think Texas does America best."

Glenn Beck on his radio show yesterday:

"You can't convince me that the founding fathers wouldn't allow you to secede. The constitution is not a suicide pact. ... [States] have a right to back out."

We know who rules the Republican Party.

Glenn Beck Calls For States To Secede

When the right-wing criticizes Obama's policies and roots for him to fail (ya know, the same thing labeled as treasonous when Democrats did so to Bush), you see, it's for America's own good. It's because they want America to succeed that they want Obama to fail. So we have Congresswoman Bachmann calling for "revolution" and referring to Washington as "enemy territory" and there's no outcry about her being anti-American; ditto Glenn Beck's call for secession from the union. As Beck's logic goes, any state should be able to "opt out" of an economic "suicide pact." In other words, secession is the only way for a state to survive.

You can't convince me that the Founding Fathers wouldn't allow you to secede.

The Constitution is not a suicide pact, and if a state says: `I don't want to go there, because that's suicide, they have a right to back out. They have a right -- people have a right to not commit economic suicide...

...Texas says go to hell, Washington, which by the way has been said before. I believe it was Davey Crocket...it's about time that somebody says that again."

You gotta listen to it -- complete with revisionist Davey Crocket history -- to believe it.

Someone with some credibility on the right really needs to call out these rightwing maniacs and reign them in before something tragic happens. It shouldn't be surprising in an environment where rightwing crazies are calling for revolution and secession that the Department of Homeland Security is warning of increased activity among right-wing domestic anti-government terrorist groups:

Right-wing extremists in the United States are gaining new recruits by exploiting fears about the economy and the election of the first black U.S. president, the Department of Homeland Security warned in a report to law enforcement officials.

The April 7 report, which Reuters and other news media obtained on Tuesday, said such fears were driving a resurgence in "recruitment and radicalization activity" by white supremacist groups, antigovernment extremists and militia movements. It did not identify any by name.

DHS had no specific information about pending violence and said threats had so far been "largely rhetorical."

But it warned that home foreclosures, unemployment and other consequences of the economic recession "could create a fertile recruiting environment for right-wing extremists."

It's more than just that the conditions are ripe for such anti-government violence, it's that there are prominent figures on the right who are given mainstream platforms despite the fact that they truly are radical inciting these fanatics. If we are attacked by a 21st century Timothy McVeigh, add Glenn Beck, Michelle Bachmann, Rush Limbaugh et al to the list of those who have blood on their hands.
