Nawaz Sharif: A leader Pakistan can do without.
In the March 25, 2009 piece in
the NY Times, Nawaz Sharif is portrayed as someone the U.S. and Pakistan can possible reconsider as a leader that can guide Pakistan through a challenging period. In reality, nothing could be farther from the truth. In the 03-25-09 NY Times article, two important questions are asked: Can Mr. Sharif, 59, a populist politician close to Islamic parties, be a reliable partner? Or will he use his popular support to blunt the military's already fitful campaign against the insurgency of the Taliban and Al Qaeda?

Nawaz Sharif who is currently vying for power in Pakistan against President Zardari, has had a long history of siding with extremists and terrorists in his lust of power. This tendency, which started early in his national career in Pakistan, continued through his first tenure as national leader, and may continue today.

Pakistan is a country that is continually tested and stressed. Whether it is via Kashmir, tensions with India, being a defacto battle ground on the war against terrorism, or just facing the challenges of being a developing nation with tens of millions living in poverty, the challenges faced by Pakistan are many. The latest challenge to face Pakistan is in the actions of Nawaz Sharif. His challenge to the current democratically elected leadership is not only short-sighted and self-serving, it threatens the stability of Pakistand, and the stability of the region in general.
