Al Gore Has Found His Calling

It would appear to me that there are those who are so wrapped up in their "presidential fantasies" that they are missing the greater picture behind what Al Gore is now accomplishing that will have a longterm effect that will last far beyond the next four years. I think it is time to focus on that because when put in context it is truly what great statesmen are made of.

O Please! Obama and the Environment

Crossposted on Pennsylvania for Al Gore

Last week, during the runup to Live Earth, a few of the Democratic candidates for President did what they could to associate themselves with the event, in an effort to woo those Democratic voters who see the environment as their top priority (I count myself amongst this group). And while some of these efforts seem noble enough, others make me want to throw something. That "other" is none other than media darling, and vanguard of the "new" kind of politics: Barack Obama. On Obama's Live Earth page, which appears to be called "O Live Earth", Obama has this to say:

Where Was the Environmental Movement at Live Earth?

We have so much to be excited about Live Earth - above all, it brought the message of a climate in crisis to more than 2 billion people worldwide - and that's something that even Ann Curry's excruciatingly stupid interviews with Al Gore and Michael Bloomberg couldn't stop.

Thanks to Al Gore, Alicia Keys, and Madonna, there are many more people today who know that the planet is in danger than yesterday, and know there are simple things they can do about it: change their lightbulbs, "stop driving so many big-ass cars" (Chris Rock), and even tell our political leaders to take action.

The world is a vastly better place for it.

But there was one big thing missing from the concerts: the environmental movement.

Please find below, potentially useful material for Live earth party discussions, to go along with the case argued by Al Gore in his movie and live earth presentations themselves.

Are you watching? Coverage of the Live Earth concerts is running all day on Bravo or Sundance Channel (among others) and then NBC will have a highlight show tonight at 8pm. You can also find a Live Earth house party near you.

Have you signed the pledge?Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have. So has Howard Dean. You can HERE. I think it's worth noting that Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barack Obama and Bill Richardson all promote Live Earth on their homepages. How about the Republican candidates? {crickets chirp}

Have you checked out the Live Earth Live Blog? My favorite post: Al Gore Appears on Live Earth Tokyo Stage As Hologram.

What's your carbon footprint? You can calculate it HERE. My ECP (or earth conservation profile) score is 278 (US average = 325) and my carbon output is 9 tons (US average = 20 tons.)

What can we do to bring this down? Some solutions can be found HERE. Even little things make a difference. I already use CFL bulbs instead of incandescents, I ask for paper bags at the grocery store and I take bottles to a local recycling center. But I can do more, such as drive less, turn off the light when I leave the room, unplug every appliance when I'm not home and bring my own reusable bag to the grocery store. Also, just learned that buying music online helps too because not only does it reduce waste but it also reduces the oil and energy required to transport cds to the store.

What are you doing today to help solve the climate crisis?
