DEMOCRATS !!! Don't Back Down !!!

Every time the Democrats draw blood , John Mc Cains BBQ Picnic Pals in the Media  try to come to his rescue and start telling Democrats what is fair and not fair. However, when Democrats are attacked by Republicans , Mc Cains BBQ Picnic Pals in the Media always say it's fair game to attack Barack Obama and Democrats. Remember: It was fair to question John Kerry s Military record in 2004 wasn't it ?

The Republicans are throwing a fit and crying "Where's The New Politics ?" because Democrats are rightfully charging (via GENERAL Wes Clark) that Mc Cain does not have the qualifications to be CIC because he led no mission and never sent anyone to battle. It's true. And Mc Cains BBQ Picnic Pals are all fussy and "such as" , because we are ruining their only good story for John Mc Cain. "He deserves to win the White House because he's a War Hero." Well, this ain't a game with prizes!

Ethics mean independance

In the past few years, American citizens have decided to make ethics a prominent issue. Citizens expect honesty from their leaders and they will not accept any betrayal of their trust anymore. This was one of the messages of the mid-term elections, in which Republicans were defeated partly because of the different scandals (embodied by Jack Abramoff or Tom DeLay) of the past years.

"The public has lost every last shred of confidence in the ability of Congress to police the conduct of its own members."
                    Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2, 2006

Ethics is definitely a nonpartisan issue. One can be either conservative or liberal but they will still expect their representatives to be honest and to use the power they have for general public interest.

But, one may say, we already have an ethics committee in Congress. This is true, but this is not enough. The ethics committee has done very little, with regard to the huge scandals of the past few years. And this is easily understandable. Relationships between people in Congress are made of calculations and compromise. It is extremely difficult for a Congressman to ask a colleague to support his bill one day after having condemned him for a violation of the ethics rules. Actually, that is what the committee is supposed to do. Having a committee means that the ethics is considered as a specific issue among others (appropriations, agriculture, transportation). Ethics is not just an issue separated from others; it is much more than that: it is a condition for politicians to accomplish their engagement and to serve people. A regular committee is not appropriate at all.

Thus, it will be necessary to have an independent commission, free to make its own decisions.  A couple of propositions have been made in the past months. Some candidates to the presidency are favorable to this reform. Sen. John Mc Cain (R) and Barack Obama (D), want an independent commission. As members of Congress, they know how difficult it is to judge one colleague's probity. This judgment can, of course, be biased by partisanship or interest. On the contrary, reasonable people who are not members of Congress are more insulated from the political calculations that limit their efficacy in deciding on ethical questions.

By creating an independent, professional agency to oversee lobbying reports and vigorously investigate ethics complaints, Congress would overcome the clear conflict of interest created by its self-monitoring
                            Hartford Courant, March 8, 2006

The creation of an independent ethics commission could and should become one key topic in the presidential election. It would be a great thing if we could force all candidates (and many  Congressmen ) to take clear positions on ethics, just as Mc Cain and Obama did.
