John Boehner Unclear on the Concept of Elections

I am not sure if there is an Elections for Dummies because otherwise I would send him a copy but could someone please tell Congressman John Boehner that those who win elections get to control government. Speaking on Sean Hannity's radio program, the House Minority Leader seemed unclear on the concept that elections have consequences:

"Well Sean listen, there's an arrogance of power here," Boehner said of Democrats' majorities. "You've got the White House controlled by the Obama folks, you've got a big majority of Democrats in the House under Nancy Pelosi and a big majority of Democrats in the Senate under Harry Reid."

How clueless can one be? You win elections, you get to set the policy agenda.

And then he goes on to bemoan that Democrats are even willing to lose seats in an effort to pass their agenda:

"This is the best chance they've had in 30 years to move a big liberal agenda and they are absolutely committed to doing it," Boehner said during an appearance on the conservative Sean Hannity radio show. "They even know that they are going to sacrifice some number of their members in the House and Senate with this big liberal agenda and they're still intent on doing it."

Wow. Democrats with principles. Imagine that. I'm not surprised that Minority Leader is a tad surprised. It's been awhile since the Democrats have demonstrated any backbone and have stood for what they believed in even at the expense of losing an election. Doing what's right for the American people is something that John Boehner is just never going to understand.

A Garlic Milkshake Recipe for John Boehner

It's clear that House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio doesn't get out much.  Even though a Quinnipiac poll just two weeks ago found that Ohio voters support 57 to 35 percent the idea of giving American consumers the option of buying health insurance from a government-run plan, Congressman Boehner told Politico's Glenn Thrush that he has yet to meet anyone who is for a public option.

"I'm still trying to find the first American to talk to who's in favor of the public option, other than a member of  Congress or the administration" said Representative Boehner, whose sole recent foray into a public discussion of health care reform was a tea-party-style event in Ohio a few weeks back. "I've not talked to one and I get to a lot of places," he told reporters at his weekly press availability. "I've not had anyone come up to me -- I know I'm inviting them -- and lobby for the public option. This is about as unpopular as a garlic milkshake."

Democratic members of the House have been quick to pounce on the rather out of touch but always tanned John Boehner.

Rep. Chris Murphy (D-CT): "Since polls in Ohio show that 57% of people support the public option, it's pretty clear John Boehner isn't hanging out with the people he represents when he goes home.  Maybe he should change up his golf foursome to include fewer Republican cheerleaders and hit the links with a few regular people."

Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY): "There are plenty of average Americans in Louisville who support the public insurance option, and I'd be happy to personally pay for one of them to fly to Washington to tell John Boehner why, if he will agree to meet with them in public. Shoot, I'll pay for John to come to Louisville, if that will make it easier for the Minority Leader."

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL): "Minority Leader Boehner clearly hasn't been listening to the American people. I'd be happy to take him to SE Mechanical Service in my district, a small business which every year has to figure out how to continue to provide coverage for their employees despite 15-20% premium increases.  When I visited  them in July, they were debating whether to end family coverage for their employees because of increased costs."

Moreover, Boehner's remarks have drawn a sharp rebuke from Brian Bowe, the executive director of the Gilroy Garlic Festival, an annual garlic celebration in Northern California that draws hundreds of thousands of people each year and donates proceeds to charity.

"I would invite him to our festival and would urge him to try the garlic ice cream," said Mr Bowe. "It's the longest line of people at the festival every year. Everyone loves it."

I can personally attest to the wonders of garlic ice cream and I am hopeful that soon enough I can attest to the wonders of a public option. Below the fold a garlic milkshake recipe for Congressman Boehner. Drink up John, you know it will be good for you!
