Mitch McConnell threatens stimulus filibuster

This morning on Face the Nation, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell stated that the current stimulus package working its way through the Senate is not likely to pass. Bob Schieffer then asked him if Republicans would filibuster the legislation.

McConnell's response:

Well, that term is thrown around a lot. In the Senate, it routinely takes 60 votes to do almost everything. It doesn't necessarily mean you're trying to slow a bill down. But a super-majority is required for virtually everything in the Senate. And certainly for something that's close to a trillion dollar spending bill, it will.

Welcome to "The 'Cult' of In Your Face!"

WELCOME TO "THE 'CULT' OF IN YOUR FACE!"
I was just watching Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer and David Brooks. And, it was an interesting study of Brooks "talking down" to Obama supporters in a kind of lame-but-paternal manner. In short, if I could take a little license and paraphrase him, he was calling us (Obama supporters) a little cultish, a little too intense; in short he was saying: Lighten up a bit. Stop acting 'cultish.' Stop being the 'ones you've been waiting for,' since that literally/really means: 'You've been waiting for yourself.' (For a moment, I even chuckled at Brooks' comment.)

I understand that. (When you're a vociferous supporter of a cause, whatever it is, it can turn other folks off. Hell, the opposition is now exploiting this depth of support of Obama's supporters versus McCain's supporters, attempting to spin it--more like grossly contort it--into a negative via a satirical t.v. commercial, where they compare Obama with visuals of Charlton Heston in his role as Moses.)

Why does this man caucus with the Democrats?

Can someone seriously tell me why the Democratic leadership cowers to this man when he says outrageous things like this on TV?

I am curious to see what Wes Clark has to say about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. I also hope he addresses the FISA crap and comes out in support of Feingold and Dodd.

Hypocrite Thy Name is Axelrod

Wow.  I have to admit my jaw hit the coffee table and nearly knocked my mug off when I heard David Axelrod on Face the Nation this morning.

Bob Schieffer asked him about some recent missteps by President Clinton as he stumped for his wife on the campaign trail.  What we heard this morning was the nice guy version of David Axelrod.  The cameras were running and pointed straight at him, so of course he was going to pretend he couldn't possibly know what was in Bill's head - or heart when it came to the things he said on behalf of Hillary.

Here's the transcript from what I could type out - take a look...

Schieffer:  What do you think about it Mr. Axelrod?  Do you think any of this has been calculated or is he just making mistakes or...?

Axelrod:  Well I can't climb into President Clinton's head and explain why he said some of the things he said - and some of them have been regrettable.  But let me say this - his wife is running for President of the United States and he is working very, very hard to try and get her elected President and to some degree that's understandable.  And uh maybe some of these indiscreet remarks can be written off to the passion he feels about trying to get his wife elected president so uh I think it should be seen in that perspective.

I do think its important for everybody in the process whether they're surrogates or the candidates themselves to be thoughtful about the things that they say because - words do have meaning and they can be disruptive and divisive and we don't need that as a party and frankly we don't need that as a country.

Here's a link to the video of the whole segment - this bit starts at about 2 minutes into it...
