GOP Destroying World-Class Wisconsin University System

Wisconsin used to take pride in its university system supported by a bipartisan consensus to create a world-class educational facility.

Now, under the leadership of the GOP-led state Assembly, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and its sister campuses are under assault, deadly assault.

Contact Speaker Michael Huebsch and his co-hort Representative Stephen Nass, and let them know that you object to their destroying a world-class educational institution.

Clinton WH Alumni: WTF?

Ok, so Donna Brazile and Mike McCurry are working for the telcos in the net neutrality fight, Donna Shalala is screwing workers at her new perch at the University of Miami, David Brooks is praising Hillary Clinton's centrism as she holds fundraisers with Rupert Murdoch, Paul Begala is calling organizers nose-pickers, George Stephanopoulos is making millions in a boring establishment show at ABC News, and I've heard rumors that Joe Lockhart is sending around corporate-funded memos to the media saying that Democrats shouldn't tackle the Medicare RX fiasco.

What's going on here?

On The University of Miami Strike

This is a guest-post from Andy Stern, President of SEIU.  You can read more about this campaign at www.YesWeCane.org. Michael Froomkin has been covering this since day one.

Donna Shalala, now the President of the University of Miami, is supposed to be a friend of working people. So why is she siding with a lawbreaking anti-worker janitorial contractor instead of the hard-working janitors who clean her campus, as they wage an historic struggle in Miami to win the right to decide their own future, protect themselves on the job, and get a shot at the American Dream?

For the last two months, campus janitors who work for the outlaw contractor UNICCO at the University of Miami have been urging Shalala to exercise her power over her contractor and her leadership to let them choose to form a union without fear of intimidation or reprisals.

They've been forced to go on strike because UNICCO began cracking down on their civil rights when the workers began organizing to take control of their own futures by forming a union with SEIU. Most of the workers are women and recent immigrants from Cuba and South America who are paid poverty-level wages and struggle to pay their bills.

What is up with the Clinton-ites?

I was poring over some data tonight for a presentation I'm doing tomorrow on blogs, and I noticed that in surveys trust is really moving away from established centers of authority.  Americans trust 'people like me' rather than experts.  And the internet really does allow for one individual's values to scale outward.  It's increasingly becoming the case that you are the message.  Or to put it another way, one should try to be the change you seek.  Individual choices matter.

Which makes this ex-Clinton thing really frustrating.  Many ex-Clintonites are doing terrific things.  But not all.  First Mike McCurry takes the side of big telco, and now Donna Shalala (former Secretary of Health and Human Services) fights against a living wage?  I got this email from a friend in the labor movement.
