Endorsement Roundup for NYC Sept. 15 Primary Election

I have spent some time tracking down the endorsements of various groups and papers that represent a broad cross section of NYC...or as broad as I could. I generally selected groups I have respect for or contact with for other reasons or that I consider of some importance to New Yorkers in general. This is not comprehensive and I am not sure I even tracked down all the endorsements from some of the groups. I should also note that I am not covering the mayoral primary largely because I am fine with either Thompson or Avella. I am also only covering a sub set of City Council races that I consider most important. It would be impossible for me to cover them all. I include my own endorsements first, though of course you are free to consider my opinion as useless and skip to the real endorsements. I hope this is helpful to all New Yorkers still undecided about who to vote for in Tuesday's primary. Some polling info and predictions can be found at the end.

John Edwards walks neighborhood plagued by home foreclosures in Cleveland

When John Edwards announced that he would take three days away from campaigning and fundraising to shine a light on the problem of poverty in America and the possible solutions, I knew I had to be part of this.

The Edwards campaign has made a real effort to encourage citizen journalism, so bloggers were welcome on the Road to One America Tour.  I strongly support Senator Edwards, and I applaud his efforts to create a movement against poverty in America.  Over the past few months, my outrage has grown as wealthy Republicans and pundits, who never lift a finger to help the poor, continue to attack Edwards for his laudable efforts on behalf of those less fortunate.  I knew it was time for me to stand up for this honorable man and his efforts to fight poverty, by acting as an honest witness.

Yesterday, I joined Senator Edwards for four of the stops on his Road to One America Tour.  It was an eye opening and a heart opening experience.  Seeing the depth of compassion that John has for those who are struggling and hearing the stories of the people that he visited made me more determined not to turn a blind eye to the struggles of those in this country for whom the American dream dissolves into a forgotten nothing in the cold light of day.

Stop Lame Ducks Street and Ramos' Bill on June 13

Casino-Free Philadelphia calls on supporters to gather at City Hall on June 13th to demand that City Council vote against zoning bills legalizing the construction of SugarHouse casino within two hundred feet of a residential community.

At the same City Council Rules Committee hearing, we will ask them to send the 1,500-foot buffer zone - supported by the majority of Philadelphians - to council for passage. In our Philly's Ballot Box election, 95% of the voters expressed their support of this buffer.

The pro-SugarHouse bills were introduced by a lame-duck at-large Councilman at the request of a lame-duck Mayor and Sugarhouse, and in direct contradiction of the overwhelming public consensus that casinos do not belong in residential neighborhoods.

With your help, we can and will make a difference on the outcome of this vote.

SugarHouse will pack the house in an attempt to create the illusion that the public supports casinos in neighborhoods. It is absolutely imperative that our supporters show up and let the voice of the majority be heard.

What: Committee on Rules Meeting
Where: City Hall, Room 400
When: Wednesday, June 13, 2007, 9:00 AM

Bring signs.

(Please note: this is a change from the original date, June 6th.)

Freep or be Silenced says News Channel 6 in NOLA

I saw this posted on DailyKos but not here on MyDD.  This has to be seen by everyone.

Credit goes to vault5151 for posting this diary over at DailyKos.

Usually online polls are harmless bits of political trivia.  Helpful to guage the interests of a large, participatory community like dailykos or myDD, but harmful when taken for more than trivia.

Today, News Channel 6 (WSDU) in New Orleans, in a cheap publicity stunt, has placed such a great and unfair weight on an online poll that freeping it is currently leading towards the silencing of the only Democratic voice in a Democratic City Council District in New Orleans.

They're dictating who they show on a candidate debate based on who wins their stupid online poll ... regardless of who has the most support.

Please, take just ten seconds to click on a link and fight back with your online vote.

Please read more.
