PALIN TO ADDRESS UN

It was formally announced tody that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin would address the United Nations when it resumes meeting in September. This is seen as part of her global outreach as she expands the foreign policy iniatives she started after leaving office.

The arrangements for the speech were made by former Ambassador John Bolton in a show of U.S. support of the UN and its mission. Governor Palin has agreed to waive her usual six figure
speaker fee.

Christmas Bombs for Iran?

Bill Kristol and John Bolton, in separate interviews, seem to be leaking a Bush plan to take out Iranian nuclear facilities before he leaves office. If it is done before the election, Obama is sunk.

MediaFail: Bolton Edition.

(cross posted at Kickin' it with CG and Clintonistas for Obama)

On Thursday, Fox News's John Gibson had former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton on his radio show. They discussed Obama's foreign policy. Bolton charged that "the best outcome" of an Obama presidency would be "a replay of the Clinton administration," meaning "more embassy bombings" and "more World Trade Center attacks":

GIBSON: The Obama team is going back to some of the old complaints about the war and the war on terror...that the left has been articulating for a long time now, and not really coming up with anything new.

BOLTON: Yeah I think honestly that's an optimistic view of it, that it will simply be a replay of the Clinton administration. It will simply have more embassy bombings, more bombings of our warships like the Cole, more World Trade Center attacks. That would be the best outcome from that perspective.

Have a listen:

Gibson failed to ask and Bolton declined to mention that the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon occurred during the Bush administration, while Bolton was serving in the Department of State.

Bolton Vote Cancelled; Nomination Pulled

Senate Democrats stand strong:Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday scrubbed a planned vote on President George W. Bush's bid to keep John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Committee Chairman Richard Lugar, an Indiana Republican, did not explain why the vote on whether to send Bolton's nomination to the full Senate was removed from the day's agenda and did not say if or when it would be taken up again.

Given Democratic opposition to Bolton's nomination, all Republicans on the committee would have to back him in order to send his name to the Senate with a full endorsement. Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, who is locked in a tight re-election bid, has not publicly said how he would vote. I just received word over email that the nomination has been pulled (although maybe that is the same thing as the vote being cancelled--I'm not sure). This follows reports that Senate Democrats had enough votes to filibuster a floor vote:With some colleagues, I have completed a real whip list, and the Republican leadership and the White House are wrong again this year. Based on conversations with individual Senators and their aides, I can say confidently that they don't have the votes.

Republicans need 60 Senators to win a cloture motion and end debate. Without tipping my hand completely, I can say that the Republican leadership has 53 votes it can count on, and another 4 who are leaning in its direction but uncertain. On a sunny day, that makes 57. Even if they capture the 2 truly undecided votes, that still leaves them a vote short of the 60 they need. It's simply not going to happen.

Democrats need to wake up and realize they have the votes to defeat the Bolton nomination. They've been lulled to sleep by the August recess and psyched out by the Republicans' phony show of confidence in Bolton's confirmation chances. After the 2006 elections, Bush will still be President and Democrats probably will not control the Senate. I imagine w can expect more of these nonsense attempts to confirm Bolton, but the Senate will be more Democratic, which makes the odds of said confirmation even lower than before. Whatever happens though, Bolton's authority at the UN will continue to be undermined, which in turn undermines the neo-con agenda. This is a nice victory for Democrats, and before long I hope we can start celebrating much bigger victories than this.

My Response to Master Jack on Bolton and Israel

Do not apologize, as a Jew who served as Presdent of his congregation and had every relative outside my mothers nuclear family murdered in the Holocaust I can not agree more. I am an American, when America is right I support her and when she is wrong I protest and work to right her within our constitutional limits.  The same holds true for Israel.  The Likud and other political conservatives have hijacked her and taken her far off field. They have not negotiated in good faith with the Palestinians since the breakdown of the Clinton/Barack led peace initiatives. In an act of treason Sharon waddled his fat ass over to the Temple Mount during the most critical point of the negotiations knowing that the act would incite a response from the radical Palestinians and break apart the negotiations!  Peace was that close, we could have had what the Protestants and Catholics of North Ireland had gotten with the Clinton/Blair/Adams peace initiatives.  But alas NOOO! The hate merchants on both sides got their way thanks to the Bush policy of disengagement.  There are young Jewish and Muslim people in Israel who have formed groups like Interns for Peace who need to be placed front and center as models of reality based people who want to live along side one another in peace.  Until the voices of moderation prevail in Israel and Palestine we will never see an end to this mutual itrocity that has reduced what was once a great experiment of a progressive Jewish nation into little more than a Spartan State.
