Brian Bilbray has never made a secret of his contempt for California's 50th district. During a landfill controversy in the early nineties, a Bilbray aide said, "The trash can pile up on the streets of North County, as far as Brian is concerned." In fact, Bilbray refuses to even live in the district he says he's representing.

"With the nation at war against global terrorism, I cannot think of a more important time to serve on committees like Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs. My top priorities will continue to be supporting our troops and winning the war on terror," said Brian Bilbray. Unfortunately, even in the short time he's been back in Congress, lobbyist Bilbray's deeds don't match his words.

We need to take back the word "liberal." It's NOT a dirty word. This country has many accepted policies in place that were considered liberal when they were first introduced; social security, sufferage, civil rights, equal pay for women, labor laws, etc. Bilbray kept throwing the word 'liberal' at her like she was trash and her ideas were not worth mentioning. I live in San Diego (not the 50th though) and the volume of attack ads was incessant! I'm damned proud to be a liberal and so should Busby have been.

CA-50 back to the Repubs. Playing out the Dem/netroots politics-as-usual strategy, with nothing radical said or done to impinge the good names of the treasonous Republican Party or treasonous Vichy Democrats, is now an established LOSER.Waving sniff-sniff hankies at Repub "ethics lapses" does not fire up the millions of withdrawn, unregistered voters. Milquetoast "get the vote out" registration drives only drive the withdrawn further underground.

In an interview on CNN this morning, Brian Bilbray was asked why he won. His response, was that he went full force in opposition to Bush's immigration policy in the last week of the election. By attacking Bush's program as amnesty and stating that if he was elected he would fight against the Bush and the Senate's immigration reform proposal, that is when he saw his numbers move (I assume he is talking about his internal campaign polling numbers).
I actually agree with Bilbray's analysis of his own victory. In addition to Francine Busby's "You don't need papers to participate" comment, McCain not coming to the district for Bilbray probably played to his advantage in the end. Immigration may become in this election what the "Gay Marriage" issue was in 2004 - and it has the added advantage of helping Republicans distance themselves from Bush in a year where their President is unpopular.
