A Visit to the Home of Mother's Day

Hillary spent part of her day in Grafton WV today.  How fitting that the first woman to make a serious run at the White House - who just happens to be a mom like me, would visit the town where this holiday was first celebrated.  More so that today's the 100th anniversary of that first Mother's Day celebration there.

But first, I finally got my pictures from the May 7th event on to the computer - here's one of my favs...

Photobucket

Ok back to Hillary's visit to Grafton, WV.  Several folks have reported on her rally there.  From First Read...

Not over 'til lady in the pantsuit says it is

"Women have been standing up for what we believe in, defying convention and going forward for a long time," she said.

"Women face a lot of barriers, some visible, some invisible," she said. "And in 2008, it's really important we recommit ourselves to making sure that our daughters and our sons have an equal chance to lead and serve in the future."

Twice during her remarks, she cited e-mails she has received from supporters, most of them women, encouraging her to fight on. She said her favorite was from a woman named Angela who urged her to "keep strong." "It's not over until the lady in the pantsuit says it is," Clinton said, quoting the letter.

snip

"I am asking for your support, so that I can continue to fight for you, fight to finish the work that we have started," she said, before quoting yet another message she received.

"Happy Mother's Day," the woman wrote to Clinton. "Hopefully I'll be wishing you one next year as president. You have already succeeded at the world's hardest job, being a mother. The second hardest job should be a breeze for you."

(Emphasis added)

That last quote clinched it for me as to what I would write about tonight.  Any mother out there will tell you raising good and kind children in this world is a tough job - a lot tougher than much of what any president will ever have to face.  And my goodness has Hillary excelled in the job of raising her child.  Chelsea absolutely shines as an example of Hillary's determined and loving care in raising her.

And from ABC news, Hillary shares some notes from her supporters...

It's Not Over Until The Lady in the Pantsuit Says It Is

"Keep fighting. No matter what the outcome may be, the fact that you stood throughout the constant ups and downs of this race -- one thing is sure -- you never wavered and you never gave up."

"'Don't give up. I'm supporting you looking at my girls and knowing that when the going gets tough, you keep forging ahead,'" Clinton said, as she continued to read the messages she'd received. "A Californian wrote, 'For the sake of our future and mothers everywhere, keep your head up, keep going in this race, keep fighting. I'm with you all the way.'"

Mother's Day is a good day to think of the amazing things mothers do in the world.  Despite what the recruiters say about the military - motherhood is the toughest job you'll ever love.  I wouldn't trade it for the world.  I know I enjoyed my special day.  Despite the stomach-ache and the rain, we wrapped up the day in a special kind of way.  Rather than our usually story-time at the end of the day, Hubby got out one of our family picture albums and we looked at our daughter's baby pictures.  Then we looked through my son's baby pictures.

So to all you moms out there, I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day, and that your kids called or made cards for you - gave you loads of hugs and kisses and that you heard "I love you mom" repeatedly today.

Yikes!  Are you sure you did not mean best candidates in the race?  If you really think "best woman in the country" you really are a lost cause.  And people think some of those supporting Obama have too much invested in their candidate.

Re: A Visit to the Home of Mother's Day (1.00 / 5)

You know - I know a lot about motherhood but don't pull that bullshit on me. You can say all you want about how great a person Senator Clinton is but don't degrade are United States soldiers by saying something so utterly fucking retarded as Motherhood being a tougher job.

Bringing life into the world; raising it - it's a thankless job that is difficult; that's overlooked.

And yes, Senator Clinton is a wonderful woman.

But nothing is tougher than going into a place where every single fucking person hates you, they would kill you if they could and you're putting your life on the line in one-hundred degree weather.

Some of our troops are doing their 4th and 5th tours of duty; a person on their seventh tour got fucking killed. On their seventh tour. On their seventh fucking tour thanks to two cronies in Washington.

Don't conflate the nice touching story you're telling with the harrowing reality that is the Iraq War.

I've been fairly even-handed with everyone here but this is the absolute fucking limit. I will not tolerate our soldiers to be decried as anything except the most important part of our national security; that it is a thankless job and that it is the toughest job in this country.

I do understand it. (2.00 / 2)

I understand it more than most on this forum, having been in the service.

I understand that the one reason I'm voting Democratic this year is this reason and this reason alone. I don't expect congress to improve or our government to become this shining beacon of hope and unity.

I'll take either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. Because they promise that it'll be done in Iraq.

No one understands how difficult it is to be in war until they've been there. And yes, we do love the job we do for the people we do effect. But we don't give a shit about the mission so much as we give a shit about the guy or lady standing next to us.

We've got their back; they've got ours.

And no. Motherhood doesn't come close. And fathers and mothers equally share in that grief. It takes a village to raise a child.

Hyperbole isn't needed when 4,000 people paid the ultimate sacrifice for no good fucking reason.

Just an amendment (2.00 / 3)

The one thing I've advocated heavily on this site is the removal of the rule prohibiting women from being on the front lines.

Two-fold - in essence, there are no "front lines" anymore. With war moving into fourth generation and guerrilla and terrorism becoming the staple of less advanced armies, the front lines are wherever they attack.

We just had a woman who was discharged because she performed some sort of surgery on some guy because the fight happened in her neck of the woods. Got her medal, then got discharged.

And the most important reason: because women deserve equal rights.

Re: A Visit to the Home of Mother's Day (1.16 / 6)

Ok. Have you faced an actual child feigning injury only to blow up and kill half your platoon or squad?

Have you faced having to trek through streets filled with people who look at you as if you're the worst person on earth? Do you have to deal with your comrades getting picked up by sniper fire in those streets?

Do you have to deal with roadside bombs that total your humvees because the government was too much of a bitch to give you the right equipment?

Did you have to deal with WOMEN WHO ARE MENTALLY HANDICAPPED COMING INTO YOUR FUCKING BASE AND BLOWING THEMSELVES UP?

Do you have to tread the line between being humane and being a brutal person who murders people because you're a-fucking-fraid to die. You can't tell who is innocent; you can't tell who's sincere.

You can't HESITATE. There are rarely second chances.

And do you know the fucking living end? When you come home and your country hates you. When your country spits on you, degrades you and calls you murderers.

Yeah. But you have it so difficult; facing the non-life ending reality of raising a child. A difficult task.

But at least when you wake up tomorrow, you know there's a great chance you'll be alright and your child will too.

But when you're fighting in a warzone where all your allies are leaving and your Commander in Chief is a fucking moron, I guess there's nothing that difficult about doing a search through someone else's home as you try to find the assholes who've been killing civilians and your brothers and sisters.

Stop playing politics with the war. Post your diaries but don't disgrace the fucking service by saying something that isn't tougher is.

Why would I tolerate the usage of holidays and our soldiers as a method to score political points?

I'm all for the freedom of speech and the love we show our candidates. But freedom of speech works both ways. When someone puts something controversial in the public square of discussion, don't expect those of us who know better to remain silent.

I've been friendly. I got angry here for a very specific reason. And I will get angry when we suggest childbearing and motherhood are harder than the service our national guard and armed forces give to this nation so that we may have children and raise them.

This was a very small part of the diary.  People who have never been mothers, don't know what it is like to be mothers.  Those who have never been soldiers don't know what it is like to be soldiers.  I think you are too personally involved with this issue as far as trying to blog about it.  You don't know what intentions alegre or anyone else have when they write a sentance, what they have gone through, whether they almost lost their life giving birth, or what kind of good or hell they have been through, and they don't know that about you.  This method of communication is too limited to get emotional over and look for an answer through.

Who brought up soldiers before you did?  This was about mothers and Mothers Day.  Now we can't praise mothers because it disparages soldiers?  Don't be ridiculous.

Fortunately, lots of brave soldiers aren't too small to say their moms do the hardest job in the world.

I have no idea how hard it's been to raise you child and I hope he/she is a healthy kid. But it is kinda of insulting to alot of people and I understand why you've hit a nerve here.

Well, that bit about soldiers in their wildest nightmares is obviously untrue because many soldiers are also moms.

And if you can't compare a soldier with a mom because you don't know what a mom has to face, I reckon you also can't make the comparison  unless you have direct experience of what all soldiers face.

As we are giving out kudos to people doing difficult jobs I will add fathers, single fathers in particular, to the list.
