Obama Will Hit 350k Donations... BINGO!

According to his campaign ticker at 21:46 EDT 29 June 2007 Senator Obama's donor and contribution figures are now 255,594 and 349,364, well on track to hit his target of 350k.

Since JeremiahTheMessiah posted the Night-time Secret diary and by my simple calculations that is 12,530 new donors and 13,130 contributions.

No matter how you slice it that is phenomenal.  I think it is clear that this primary election campaign is headed into uncharted territory.

Update: Sometime after 2:00AM EST the goal was achieved and I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the several bloggers here from myDD vying for the honour of being the 350,000th. Perhaps the good Senator will give him/her a call. Hope so. That was fun!

It will be interesting to read the spin/blogblather about why this is meaningless...blah...blog...blah...bull. ..it's very clear that Obama is the only candidate out there who is inspiring anybody.  350k contributors!!! that is more than the population of St. Louis!

Not quite. St.Louis metro area is almost 3M.

It's 350K donations -- pushing 256K unique donors.

Closer to Atlantic City, which is 270K.

Still, pretty damned awesome!

Donations as of this post: 349,566

Jae, there's no sense complaining, it's not going to change. Beaton writes a piece today talking about how rare it is to hear Democrats speak in terms of "what it means to be a Democrat", and yet they refuse to talk honestly the energy Obama is creating for the Party, an energy we haven't seen since the Kennedys over 40 years ago.  But it's okay, they still think the netroots is them and they can't admit that the waters around them have grown.  They better start swimming...

To be fair, Jonathan Singer did have a post up
on Thursday, and there was another post up about Hillary's announcement that Obama was going to beat her this quarter.  I assume there will be no end of front-page space looking at the final numbers from all the campaigns once they come out.
The front-pagers have seemed skeptical that Obama can translate his buzz into concrete accomplishments and poll numbers.  Let's just prove them wrong.

Re: Obama Will Hit 350k Donations (3.00 / 1)

In many ways we just did.  In January he was an empty suit who couldn't stand the rigours of a campaign.  In February he was a hollow Facebook phenomenon which couldn't be translated into contributions or volunteers.  In March he was too inexperienced and just campaign-bait for the seasoned predators like Hillary.

Well, what are they gonna' say now?  He has more contributions than he had Facebook friends.  No excuses for complaining about his policies except lack of attention on the part of the complainant.  He can mobilise 10k volunteers at the drop of a pin across the countrly and put them to meaningful, in fact wholesome, work.  Campaign offices all over the place.  And now he is going to have significant resources to throw at his growing organisation.  Uh-oh...

In spite of all the 'business-as-usual' spin coming out of Hillary Central at the moment I am guessing they are quietly crapping themselves.  Things are not going according to script...

Re: Obama Will Hit 350k Donations (none / 0)

That being said, I'd like to see some movement in the polls... its been pretty stagnant for far too long.  This is gonna piss off the Edwards crowd on here, but once Hillary consistently passes him by 5% on the RCP average, he's pretty much done and this becomes a two dog race barring a Gore entry.  Obama needs to make a move and start pulling those numbers his way.  I'm more interested to see spending reports for Q2 than anything else and see what COH is currently.  If HRC is outspending Obama significantly, then its on... If he is outspending her, then I'm a bit worried.

Eventually, the Actual Game is Played (none / 0)

One of the things I find amusing is the comfort level some have with equating "today" with the actual game days to be played in 6 months.

IIRC, John Kerry was polling in single digits about this time in 2003, and very shortly therafter, was behind Dean in fundraising by at least $20 million.  By the fall of 2003, Dean was the prohibitive frontrunner with double digit leads nationally. Kerry was bumbling so badly at this time in 2003, he had to fire his campaign management, in the hopes of reviving his moribund chances.

By January of 2004...well...Kerry literally squeeked...eeked...out a tiny, tiny, narrow win in Iowa.

Then, to the surprise of most everyone you might have asked in July of 2003, Dean did "something" unexpected at a post election rally, and the MSM turned that "something" into an act of presidential disqualification...the likes of which we have not seen in decades (you would have to go back, I think, to another out of the blue event...Muskie crying in...was it NH?)

The lesson?

Re: Eventually, the Actual Game is Played (none / 0)

That should have been once she passes Edwards in Iowa on the RCP.

Everything you said is pretty much not going to happen in 2008; its a different year than 2004... I like Edwards, but he needs a miracle and unless both Clinton and Obama fuck up big time, its not going to happen.  My guess is this becomes a two dog race after the Q2 announcements with Obama gaining about 5 points and HRC maintaining where she is (We'll see this happen before the end of July), with the possibility of becoming a Three Dog race with Gore hopping in (although I think that he might try and cut a deal with Obama if he enters)

Great photos.

If Obama can get his debate chops together (and he's getting better), he'll be even more formidable.

I just hope he doesn't get too wonky.

Everyone's saying he needs to spell out plans for this and that. He doesn't, he just needs major themes, talking about what he's going to do and the kind of people he's going to appoint.

Dems always get wrapped up in the details during the primaries, then get picked apart on them in the general.

Republicans go with general themes and stay bullet proof.

In fact, it is not just the Corporate Media that is playing dumb on this; there is absolutely no sense of joy in the left blogosphere either -- I specifically joined MyDD today to post on this unusual shunning of Obama in general and the unbelievable vitriol with which frontpagers periodically post particularly nasty comments on him, both here and at DailyKos.

All this, on the only viable candidate to have opposed the Iraq war from before it started, who gives a thoughtful and correct prescription for a terrorist strike reaction on our soil and talked about global warming as one of the two problems he voluntarily named in his 60 minutes interview as requiring urgent action (the other was Iraq), to just name a few qualities that should endear him to us.

Sometimes I think the left blogosphere is doing to Obama what the corporate shills did to Gore...

Re: Obama supporters:: (3.00 / 1)

This inane obsession with "detailed plans" long before the candidates are certain that they are going to be serious contenders (money, buzz etc) is pretty inexplicable.  The time to look for plans is around the last quarter of this year.  Even then the plans should really be outlines of the goals they want to achieve and some indication of the way they plan to get there, not hundreds of pages of manifesto, never read by anyone, but which merely quiet the criticisms of those that loudly called for them.

Right now, we need to be examining their life and times to determine if the person on the one hand is who s/he is portraying hirself to be, and on the other hand, is indeed evincing, by virtue of biography, a capacity to achieve the vision that they are setting out for the future.  AND paying attention to their ability to attract non-partisan support -- because, like it or not, a (D) next to the name in the general election will get those of us that are serious about the process to vote for them anyhow, what really matters in the end, is their capacity to bring the country together for a comfortable governing majority.  Especially after these last few election cycles of sliver thin "victories".

So sit back, enjoy the dems' pitches, read about their lives, listen to what they are saying, weigh the two together, write about the disparities, without ever trashing them personally and vituperatively, and if you are wonky or just cussed enough, await full plans in the fall.  All the people that we are currently weighing are all going to be in our camps ultimately, they are our friends both by virtue of the common tag and more importantly, by virtue of a broad, shared philosophy.

Obama is raking in the donors and donations?  Revel.  Clinton is flying high in the polls and crushing the thugs in a general match-up, revel, with caution :-)  Edwards is punching back hard at the hate-mongers and framing issues beautifully ("we need to be patriotic about something other than war", wow!) -- revel!  Richardson has delightful ads and charms the bees off the trees in person, REVEL!  Gravel throws rhetorical bombs at the leading dems in public, be glad that those ideas are getting a hearing.  Kucinich makes so much sense that just this once, may I be forgiven that I wish that the packaging were better to attract more supporters.

Plans?  Details?  Wait and read the plans of just those with the staying power.  Until then, pick something more interesting to read, like "Dreams from my father" :)

Re: Obama Will Hit 350k Donations (3.00 / 0)

Now, where did I say that?

I am only protesting the fact that Obama seems to draw a particularly vicious and vacuous response on the Internets, esp by the powerful front page owners, that is not really warranted by a liberal-minded pol who is navigating these treacherous waters quite elegantly, drawing the country together in the process.  What's really not to like about a candidate who, in his own quiet way, is putting into motion the peaceful revolution necessary to take the political process to a better place, that Gore is quite loudly advocating?

I do not want to state in so many words, but it is not a coincidence that the two leading potentially history-making candidates are the ones drawing the most viciously personal invectives.  There is a way to discuss substantive differences without being viciously personal about it -- this is a mode largely absent in the discussions about Obama and Clinton.  I can stretch my credulity and understand that about Clinton, to an extent, because of the war issue, which is too consequential to sometimes maintain a rational tone about.  But Obama?  After his beautiful explanation of his modus operandi and the reasons behind that in his DailyKos post?  What is the difference between y'all and the corporate media?

Re: Obama Will Hit 350k Donations (3.00 / 3)

best post I have heard about what is going on I've ever seen, the netroots "leaders" are upset they aren't in on the action  and to be blunt they like being pandered too, it accouts for Hillary's sucess with lower info groups and Edwards success on the internet, Obama doesn't play that game much which endears him to many but not the people jealous of his sucess, I liked Howard Dean but now we have the real deal an electable reformer who can transform politics for generations in this counrty propelled by out future leaders instead many want to settle for a candidate hated by half the country or are ditracted by a candidate frankly going nowhere outside the world of internet forums.

Re: Obama Will Hit 350k Donations (none / 0)

No, you should stop trashing Hillary too :-)  Seriously, her life itself has been a remarkably dedicated championship of the downtrodden, esp children.  She has shown singularly bad judgment in the Senate and esp on the one litmus test in my mind, the war.  However, as Dems go, she is not bad and she is a terrific face of the party and would probably make quite a splendid history-making woman prez (because at last she can possibly stop being the Bill-induced political creature and may be go with her heart and head, who knows)?

All in all, not a dump-worthy life of service at all.  Her work-ethic should be drawing kudos from all of us.  That her supporters can sometimes be silly, is not enough of a reason to trash her...

[As on aside, I am beginning to strongly suspect that Bill's own tenure was somewhat excellent mainly because of Gore's good judgment being the last advice in his ears before he made a decision (per Stephie in his book).]

When you are up by double in the polls- (see latest CBS- http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/05/2 4/opinion/polls/main2848857.shtml ) Clinton 46  Obama 24 you're probably sleeping pretty well- It's about the issues and substance- as long as you have competitive money- contests are really fun but not when we're talking about such a serious consequence by our choice.

Re: Obama Will Hit 350k Donations (none / 0)

The sample group was 300 and some Democrats.  For a national poll, that's nothing.  The poll was flawed when it came down to 1. A decent sized sample. 2. A good number of Democrats to Republicans.

Hillary's unfavorables were down, but they had over 300 Democrats to 200 some Republicans and 300 independants.  There is no way there is a 300-200 ratio going on in America right now.

Personally I think Obama is already healing the country.  We will be well on our way before the election ends, and then, well... It just may be him on the steps of the Capitol in January 2009.  Yeah, and just in the nick of time...

While waiting, I'd like to say one of the many things which makes me proud to be part of this campaign.

Every candidate has Contribution Eligibility section of the donation form where you must confirm that the following statements are true and accurate.  Obama's is unique in that he is the only candidate who lists among other conditions that you confirm you are not giving money from a PAC, you are not a federal Lobbyist, and you did not receive the money from another person for the purpose of making the donation.  These donations we are eagerly counting tonight are clean and match precisely our candidates rhetoric.  Not every Democrat can say that about their candidate and I am proud that we can.

Re: Obama Will Hit 350k Donations (3.00 / 2)

Barack Obama has surpassed 250K donors (release, 6/28). Obama personally called WA high school teacher Angela Berg, who made the milestone donation. In an e-mail, Berg said "she feels like she won the lottery." When told Obama would call her soon, "she locked herself in her bedroom, hung up on her dentist when he called and told her husband to use his cell phone to call his mother." She wrote down some things she wanted to say, but "promptly forgot most of them" when Obama called. Berg: "He said that he appreciated my contribution because he knows that Washington teachers aren't paid [extravagantly]. I just told him that I was happy to invest in something I support so whole-heartedly" (Postman, Seattle Times blog, 6/28).
Obama spokesperson Bill Burton said the camp recorded an average of 1,550 contributions a day, but had 5.6K new donors 6/28 alone. He noted that the camp has built a base of nearly 250K supporters in five months, "nearly the same number" as Hillary Clinton's database. Burton: "This is showing how quickly people are getting interested and showing support for our grass-roots movement" (Healy/Zeleny, New York Times, 6/29).

Congrads to Obama08 for getting quoted in today's national jouranl HotlineL

"MyDD's Obama08: "When you crunch those numbers that means that he has recruited an average of over 1,380 new donors EVERY DAY this year. Impressive you say. Now we look a little deeper and remember that he had over 100,000 donors in the first quarter, meaning that there will be about 150,000 new unique voters this quarter. That means that he will have recruited about 1,650 donors a day throughout this quarter, that is nearly unbelievable. I don't care whether you call it a movement or not, moving that many people to donate on a daily basis is incredible.""
