Adding Structure & Value to Adwatch

Below are some thoughts on how we might add more structure to the Adwatch project in ways that could add value in this election cycle, in post-election analysis of what worked, what didn't and why, and also in future election cycles.

The basic idea is to create one or more of the following, which would include links to and from each other and to/from other web pages.  Some of the information on these different page-types would be duplicative, which could save time and effort.  I think the duplication could be valuable, by accommodating different user purposes (e.g., to evaluate and compare specific campaigns, or to evaluate and compare specific ad-creators.)

1.  An Adwatch "ad creator listing" page with a consolidated list of the creators of 2006 campaign ads, including some basic (and sortable) information on these ad-creating entities.

2.  A dedicated Adwatch web page for each ad-creating entity active in 2006 campaigns.

3.  A page with a consolidated Adwatch listing of House and Senate (and other?) 2006 campaigns, including some basic (and sortable) information on each campaign.

4.  A dedicated Adwatch web page for specific House and Senate 06 campaigns

General Notes:

--What I'm proposing may be overkill, given the limited time and resources we face in this campaign cycle, as balanced against potential benefits in the 2006 election.  I don't really have good visibility on this tradeoff, but thought there might be something in here worthy of near-term effort in this election cycle.  If not, some of it may be worth considering down the road.
--The descriptions below assume we'd create all four of the web page types listed above--a consolidated "listing" page for ad-creating entities and a similar listing page for campaigns, as well as specific web pages dedicated to each ad-creating entity and each campaign.  If we didn't do all four of these page types, the structure of the information would probably need to change somewhat.
--I suggest that the two listing pages (ad-creators and campaigns) be structured as a sortable table.  If we took this route, we'd want to keep the details on the listing page to a minimum, to avoid clutter and make the sorting more manageable.  But I think having sortable listing pages would make these pages more useful as research and navigational tools.
--A key question is whether a framework (HTML code, input processes) can be cost-effectively created that would allow campaigns, ad-creators and assorted 'volunteers' to quickly and easily input (and edit) the necessary content into this framework.  Put another way, the question is how much dedicated skilled labor would be needed to create the framework and how much of the 'content input' work (both upfront and ongoing) would fall on the shoulders of a small number of individuals whose time might be better used elsewhere.

Details:

1.  Each listing on the Adwatch 'ad-creator' listing page might include the following:
--Name of ad-creating entity (sortable by name), which would be a hyperlink to that entity's dedicated Adwatch page (see below).
--Principles (key individual at entity, maybe also name-sortable)
--Number of House campaigns handling in 06 (numerical sorting)
--Number of Senate campaigns handling in 06 (numerical sorting)
--Years in the business (maybe also sortable)
--Other?  (e.g., a 'only Dem?' or 'only political' fields that noted if the entity worked only for Dems or only did political ads)

2.  Each Adwatch page for a specific 'ad-creating entity' might include the following:
--Name of entity
--Principles
--Number of House campaigns handling in 06
--Number of Senate campaigns handling in 06
--Summaries of ad-creating entity
--Supplied by entity itself (could just be lifted from their web site, but could invite them to submit something specific to the Adwatch project)
--From knowledgeable but relatively neutral source, to provide a more independent description of the entity (can be updated, as appropriate)
--Listing of campaigns this entity is working for in 06, including:
-Links to each campaign's Adwatch page (see below)
-Links to each campaign's home page
-A 'button' or other link labeled "This campaign's ads".   This would link to another page that provided a listing of ads created for each campaign, with a link to each ad's MyDD Adwatch thread, which would include a link to the ad itself on YouTube or wherever, accompanied by the MyDD discussion thread discussing that ad.  The ad listing would probably use the ads "name," as used by the campaign or, if not available, one made up by the original Adwatch poster for that ad (Note: this same ad-listing page for each campaign would be accessible via the individual campaign pages described below. This would allow users to drill down to specific ads starting with either a campaign focus or an "ad-creator" focus.  Allowing both of these drill-down pathways seems useful if we assume that some uses of this resource will be focused on evaluating specific campaigns, while others will be more focused on evaluating specific ad-creators).

3.  Each listing on the Adwatch "campaign listing" page might include the following:
--Candidate (sortable by name; link to campaign home page)
--Office (Senate, House, Governor, State Legislator, etc.)
--State (sortable)
--District, if appropriate (sortable)
--Incumbent or Challenger (sortable by I vs. C)
--Primary ad-creating entity working with campaign (sortable by name of entity, with hyperlink to its Adwatch page)
--Competitive status of race (sortable shorthand based on some sort of topology like safe-Dem, lean-Dem, toss-up, etc.).
--Other??

4.   Each Adwatch page for a specific campaign might contain:
--Candidate/campaign summary statement from campaign
--Candidate/campaign summary statement from independent analyst(s), including strengths, weaknesses, voter mix, history, expectations, challenges, strategies, etc. (again, relatively neutral, but not wishy-washy; it could also be updated over time)
--Link to official campaign web site and other related sites (e.g., their listing on the ActBlue site??)
--Donation button
--Name of ad-creating entity (or entities) working with this campaign, including a link to that entity's Adwatch-page (see #2 above) and home-page.
--A 'button' or other link labeled "This campaign's ads".  This would link to another page that provided a listing of ads created for each campaign, with a link to each ad's MyDD Adwatch thread, which would include a link to the ad itself on YouTube or wherever, accompanied by the MyDD discussion thread discussing that ad.  The ad listing would probably use the ads "name," as used by the campaign or, if not available, one made up by the original Adwatch poster for that ad (Note:  This same ad-listing page for each campaign would be accessible via the individual "ad-creating entity" pages described above.
--These campaign-specific Adwatch pages might also include some ongoing commentary on the evolution and success of the campaign's media strategy, including analysis of the effectiveness of specific ads, tracking poll data, etc.
