Sorry, but I just never got excited about this race. We sent a message in the primary. Joe will caucus as a Democrat. I know everybody here disagrees, but I'm a lot more interested in picking Republican seats.

Re: I don't care (none / 0)

Joe will caucus with whomever kisses his ring. Towards the end of this thing he backed away from his initial pledge to caucus with the Democrats.

Re: I don't care (none / 0)

He reiterated his commitment to caucus with the Dems. I don't like Joe Lieberman, but he'll be the same ornery twit he was before. Only now, the national media will know that he doesn't represent normal Democrats.

Who cares if caucuses with the dems. He will still vote the wrong way on Iraq and that war will suck away resources from the progressive causes he supports. Let's not forget how vindictive this guy is.

Re: why would he vacate? (none / 0)

Because maybe he would see it as a stepping stone to either a "Unity" spot -- and , no doubt, Lieberman sees this election as a validation of, in principle -- or a continued cabinet presence in an '08 GOP presidency.

I see less and less reason for Joe to stick around.  The past month has let Joementum reveal his true character: a liberal-hating neoconservative asshole.  Frankly, I don't see the guy WANTING to spend the next 6 years hanging out with Ted Kennedy and James Carville when he could be whooping it up with Hugh Hewitt and Michelle Malkin.

Lieberman defends the mass genocide and War Crimes of Bush & Cheney and also the offenses against the U.S. Constitution with rigid stubborness no matter what the facts.

His passion and mission is to castrate politcal opposition to the Bush-Cheney agenda within the Democratic Party and make it impotent.

He takes personal glee and delight in chastizing Democrates if they dare to speak up and express opposition to the madness.

He is not a Democrat.
He is a GOP mole ( plant ) that has helped to destroy and nueter the Democratic Party.

He won based on dishonesty and talking out of both sides of his mouth and getting funding directly by GOP.

He sets the progressive agenda backwards.
He is a political tool of Bush/Cheney/right-wing

We went over this in many diaries in the past.
YOu got people who are against the Iraq war, but seem to buy into Lieberman's bullshit about how he tolerates dissenting views on the war, and how it's just one issue when in reality Lieberman has given bipartisan cover to republican attacks on liberals in general on many shows. HOw Lieberman has canvassed with republicans.

There are people who seem to buy into the fact that Lamont has no plan but do not bother to ask themselves if Lieberman has a plan despite Lieberman having a staff build over 18 years in the senate. There is no logic in what the voters say they want and what they are voting for.

Yes. High turnout always sounded ominous. Joe's low info voters actually showed up and it doesn't seem like Lamont improved that much on recent polls.

I think Lamont did what he could but Joe is a clever politician and he managed to be for and against most issues.

If joe showed half the fighting for survival instinct during the FL recount, maybe Gore gets a fair recount.

Joe didnt run a great public campaign. But he did fight hard behind the scenes and got the machinery going very well. So the overall campaign was effective. Getting people to repay past favors was his key strength.

I wrote a diary, where I'd found an American company that did something atrocious in a country where a very popular politician is probably going. I deleted it, renamed it, and deleted it again. I didn't want to add anything negative to what may happen, and I'm not aware enough of the details to make a good decision about it. If you are aware of what I'm talking about, would you please tell me if I should resubmit it, wait for a better time, or drop it altogether.

Re: The MSM Calls it for Joe (none / 0)

Ned didn't run the perfect campaign - he would have won had he done that - but he did run a surprising, exciting, energizing campaign for the netroots.

Had Ned NOT won, I doubt that the fall campaign would have been as active online.  Ned's victory was a watershed for the online community...that we could take on the powers that be and win.

Thanks, Ned.  I hope you learn from this race, stick with politics, and represent the people of Connecticut as well as we know you can.

by IrishAlum on Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 09:25:46 PM EST

Re: The MSM Calls it for Joe (none / 0)

I agree. Ned didn't run a perfect campaign. But I am not going to say Lamont deserved to lose becqause of obvious campaign missteps. Many candidates run imperfect campaigns. I think Lamont's people improved on the Dean campaign a couple of years earlier. Now the next wave should examine this campaign and see what to pounce on and what to avoid in future challenges. LESSON 1: BE RUTHLESS IN POLITICS. LESSON 2: CLOSE CLOSE CLOSE.

Nevertheless, people are idiotic if they ignore the massive accomplishment in a political novice getting 40% of the vote against a powerful 18 year incumbent who has poweful friends in both major parties and hasn't committed any sex or corruption scandals. No CENTRIST would have gotten more than that or have beaten Lieberman in the primary. The ocnsolation is even if Lieberman has won, at leaet he has lost that aura that is a great statesman, except among the right wingers.

Re: I do hate that acronym (none / 0)

By the debates came around, the Bushies already did their job sending ingraining their message about Lieberman into their followers.

Schlesinger didn't have much of a chance once that happened. Maybe if the debates took place earlier, he might have changed a few more minds.

by Pravin on Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 09:38:33 PM EST

Holy Joe was the Republican candidate (none / 0)

The Republican voters didn't go for Schlesinger because within 48 hours of the primary Bush, Rove and the Republican Establishment emphatically refused to back him and just as emphatically made it clear that the Republican choice was Joe Lieberman.

The exit poll pie chart shown on CNN showed clearly that without huge Republican support, something like 35%, Lieberman would not have been in the race.

This factor, added to the Democratic Establishment's abandonment of Lamont, gave us six more years of Holy Joe.

I hope that as time goes by it passes into insignificance, but I do fear further problems from Holy Joe.

I cannot stand Joe Lieberman.  I hated him before it was cool.  I gave money I could not afford to Lamont.  I blame the Democratic Party Establishment, the Beltway Money Boys, the Anti-People Democrats for this result.

That said.  It's over.  We have other battles before us.  Let's put the Lamont/Lieberman race behind us.  By us, I mean all of us here at mydd, and all over the left blogosphere.  We need to stop arguing with each other about this.  The future is a little brighter but there is still a lot of work to do.  We need each other.

Caveat:  If Holy Joe jumps to the Republicans, I will expect apologies across the board from the Democratic Shushkas who helped him keep a job that he did not deserve.

Re: The MSM Calls it for Joe (3.00 / 2)

Honestly, I think it would be much better for Democrats to not give Leiberman seniority and have him caucus with the Republicans. He would become THE face of the Senate, and the most influential Senator, and would effetively undermine everything we do to the point that it would be better to force the Republicans to govern with a slim majority. With Leiberman, we begin our reign grovelling and capitulating to a Republican. We become the Friedman, Klein, Broder party.

by Memekiller on Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 09:43:20 PM EST

Especially if Lieberman is not the swing vote. THEN THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO GIVE HIM SENIORITY. But you know what, the dem establishment will expose themselves to everyone that they will spit on the dem base by giving a guy who lost his own primary seniority despite the fact that Lieberman's caucusing with the Dems will not change the balance of power.

Oh and if Lieberman is not the swing vote, guess what, Repubs won't have as much incentive to give him a plum committee.

Joe 'Pyrrhic' Lieberman (none / 0)

Lieberman is done.  Lieberman's entire political schtick depended on his public piety and his helicopter politics.  But the only reason he got any airplay with any of that is that he was a Demorcrat siding with Republicans.  Lamont ended Joe's mock Democrat bit.  Joe's an elected offical of a party of one.  Republic operatives can't use him for bipartisan cover.
