Osama bin Laden is Dead

Osama bin Laden, the Saudi-born head of the Islamist terror group Al Qaeda, is dead and his body is in custody of US intelligence officials in Pakistan. The news is breaking at this hour with details scarce. Early reports from the Associated Press indicate that bin Laden was killed in a ground operation, not in a drone attack, in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, just 100 km, or 60 miles, north of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. The President is set to address the nation with crowds gathering outside the White House in a patriotic fervor singing the Star Spangled Banner in celebration.

Geopolitically, the picture isn't likely to change much but politically for the President this is a major accomplishment for President Obama and his national security team. At the very least this should provide a lift in his poll numbers and perhaps some validation of his Afghan war strategy.

The story in the New York Times.

We did it

There was , when we were struck by Bin Laden and his army - a case for nemesis. Bin Laden was the leader of a vast network / and such a shadow network organization - dispersed over so many countries - would never have yielded to us, a moment like lord Cornwallis' surrender at yorktown peninsula. There would never have been a moment where any american president or general would have received the sword of the opposing army, and our war would end.

Except the well-protected, shadow figure himself - to be taken in. Bin laden was wealthy, protected by high ranking people - moved all over the region. We came close in Tora Bora.

And now we've won. This is a great day for America. This is about peace. And justice. Not blood.

Speaking personally,  I just walked outside to my front door. And sang the National Anthem.

I found my voice became loud, and clear, and strong.

We did it! Gratz!

Osama Killed

We got the bastard! Hooray! Congratulations to President Obama, the intelligence community, the operation planners, and to those who executed the mission so bravely and efficiently.

It was heartening to how so many of our citizens were celebrating excitedly  and patriotically last night - at ground zere, at universities, at the White House and other locations.

Morning pundits noted that so many of these celebrants were young people. Of course, like me, the old people were asleep in bed.
