Sarah Palin, The Gift that Keeps on Giving

I suppose I should write John McCain a thank you note for bringing this absolute moron, and I mean absolute moron, to national prominence. Those of us on the left owe the 2008 GOP Presidential nominee a debt of gratitude for plucking this half-baked Alaskan and setting her on the national stage. She's the gift that keeps on giving. She's like an oil spill that can't be plugged, a gusher of mindless dribble who is dispossessed of any original thought spewing countless meaningless platitudes that she, in her befuddling naiveté and sheer stupidity, believes passes for political discourse. Whatever political skills she presumes to have, they were wholly absent earlier this week with her endorsement of Carly Fiorina in the California GOP Senate primary that has simply left many of her deranged followers aghast. But their discomfort is my schadenfreude.
Writing on Facebook:
I’d like to tell you about a Commonsense Conservative running for office in California this year. She grew up in a modest home with a school teacher dad, worked her way through several colleges, and then entered an arena where few women had tread. Through a combination of hard work, perseverance, and common sense, she proved the naysayers wrong to reach the top of her field, where she led with distinction – facing hard truths, making tough decisions, and showing real leadership through a rocky transition period. Where others had failed, her company had weathered the storm and settled on a stronger new foundation.
Her name is Carly Fiorina, and I’m proud to endorse her for U.S. Senate.
Carly is the Commonsense Conservative that California needs and our country could sure use in these trying times. Most importantly, she’s running for the right reasons. She has an understanding that is sorely lacking in D.C. She’s not a career politician. She’s a businesswoman who has run a major corporation. She knows how to really incentivize (sic) job creation. Her fiscal conservatism is rooted in real life experience. She knows that when government grows, the private sector shrinks under the burden of debt and deficits. We can trust Carly to do the right thing for America’s economy and to make the principled decisions she has throughout her professional career.
Please consider that Carly is the conservative who has the potential to beat California’s liberal senator, Barbara Boxer, in November. I’m a huge proponent of contested primaries, so I’m glad to see the contest in California’s GOP, but I support Carly as she fights through a tough primary against a liberal member of the GOP who seems to bear almost no difference to Boxer, one of the most leftwing members of the Senate. Carly needs our support in this crucial election year when we have a real chance of putting an end to the Pelosi/Reid “Big Government” agenda.
Poor State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, the really way out there in right field crazy as guano conservative, who didn't even rate a mention in our latest inane installment of Sarah does Facebook. Most enjoyable is the reaction from Sarah's fans. Here's a sampling:
Jeff Muller writes "FIORINA IS THE WORST! Maybe Sarah isn't all we thought she was. First McCain, now Fiorina? Who's pulling your strings Sarah?? I'm thinking about an un-friend campaign right now."
Connie Berry writes "I am disappointed by your endorsement of Carley too Sarah. Carley was a failure at HP and you want her to be the next California senator. I can't tell you how bad I feel. I guess you are a politician first and not the principled conservative I once thought you were. :("
What conservatives like Sarah Palin call principles, the sane among us call delusions. Sarah has no principles, she has delusions. She lives in an alternative universe where free markets never fail, the poor don't exist, where natural resources never run out and where government run health care is a death panel. In Sarah's world, one doesn't need an education, especially not an Ivy one, all one needs is "commonsense conservatism," the tritest of phrases that she chooses to bludgeon us with without ever really defining what she presumes to mean by it.
In Sarah's world, the general collective good matters not one iota as long as she and her cohorts can milk the system for untold millions. Hers is the noxious triumph of Reaganite ignorance that has gripped as if a plague our fair Republic. It is not a case of the blind leading the blind today in the United States but the dumb and dumber leading a mass of ignorant, downright willfully undereducated, wholly subservient morass of Americans who self-describe as Tea Partiers.
Sarah Palin is simply a loathsome creature for as low an opinion that I have about Chuck DeVore, he, at least, is true to his own warped convictions but Sarah Palin in endorsing Carly Fiorina she has yet again demonstrated that she lacks any political acumen and once again vividly expressed that she holds no conviction other than what is personally expedient. And is the politics of personal expediency that has put this country in the bind that it now faces.
Here's hoping she graces us with an endorsement of Meg the witless wonder in the California Governor's race. Both Meg and Carly are running for one reason and one reason only and that's to preserve their wealth. Let's, at least, be blunt about that. Their anti-tax crusade isn't about some Jeffersonian notion of limited government as much as it is about their own perverse greed.
Marc Ambinder posits that that Palin endorsed Fiorina in the hopes of procuring a return endorsement down the line should Palin run for the Presidency in 2012. I tend to doubt that Palin will sacrifice the eight figure income she now enjoys. But betting on Carly is quite the long shot. Fiorina isn't even likely to make out of the California GOP primary as things stands now. The move, coming on the heels of the more understandable support for her patron John McCain, has only served to tarnish the Palin brand among the Tea Party set. Fiorina come a month from now is likely only to have added failed political candidate to go with her failed CEO on her curriculum vitae.
