Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

Check this out:

Under a blog headed "potential Senate candidacy," the Boston Red Sox legend wrote Wednesday: "I do have some interest in the possibility."

It should not necessarily come as a surprise that the political vacancy left by late Sen. Edward Kennedy might hold an attraction for Schilling.

The day after he helped pitch the Red Sox to their first World Series title since World War I, Schilling saw fit to remind viewers of "Good Morning America" to vote, "and vote Bush next week."

Rumors had him pondering a Senate run a year ago against Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts - a prospect he seemed to dismiss only because he still thought he had a decent split-finger fastball.

He has campaigned for President Bush, rallied voters for former presidential candidate Sen. Jon McCain (R) of Arizona, and told Boston radio station WRKO in 2007 that running for office is "something my wife and I have talked about a couple of times."

Or this:
He is also a complete nerd. That's no mark against him, just an opportunity to relate this Schilling quote about the game Everquest: "My first foray into Lower Guk was a lot of fun. ... Completing the Robe of the Lost Circle quest was a blast. ... One night I log in, and there's a 55 level monk there."
I was just talking to a friend about the possibility of the top of the Democratic ticket in California next year being Barbara Boxer and Jerry Brown vs the Republican duo of Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina. That could get iffy.

But my guess is that life in politics will be a lot rougher for Shilling than it was with the baseball beat writers: ""If you haven't figured it out by now, working in the media is a pretty nice gig," the pitcher wrote. "Barring outright plagiarism or committing a crime, you don't have to be accountable if you don't want to." That thin-skin, surrounding his "fake bloody sock" hoopla (it was real blood but so what). Don't get me wrong. The Democrats in Massachusetts could blow this. Afterall, they allowed Romney to become MA's Gov a term.

Re: Curt Shilling: NY US Senator?

I watched on TV with my Dad and Grandad in the  when Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game. He was my hero that day.
"The date was June 21, 1964. The Phillies were playing the Mets at Shea Stadium in front of 32,026 fans. Jim Bunning took the mound for the Phillies on this Father's Day. The father of seven reached back and threw the game of his life. He faced the minimum 27 up 27 down. It was the first perfect game in the National League in 84 years."

That's a great game. My favorite growing up is the Kurt Gibson moment of the Dodgers vs the A's, and his game winning homer in the '88 series.

I just got done reading 1964, about the Cards and Yankees mostly, but boy did the Phillies blow it that year at the end of the season!

I think Jerome meant MA not NY in the title so I made the edit.

Yea, thanks.... I was thinking about the Sox-Yankees battle or something.

Re: Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

If the environment stays bad for the Dems (no or bad health care, etc.) the GOP's chances would go from about 5% to about 40%.  Schilling would pull in a lot of independents.

Not only did MA Democrats allow Romney to be elected, they allowed Deval Patrick to be elected also.  That's almost as bad.

Re: Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

As soon as he opens his mouth and starts talking policy and where he stands he's toast. No choice, religious right, he's practically a club for growth candidate. Just is not going to fly in MA. As a pitcher Red Sox nation loves him as a candidate not so much.

Re: Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

If a Republican were to win Ted Kennedy's seat, it would truly be the end for Democrats.  It would be like a Democrat picking up Orrin Hatch's seat in Utah.  The Democratic party would go the way of the Whigs.

Re: Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

Yes, clearly a win by a celebrity candidate in one state would automatically make all the other Democrats lose.

What the devil is WRONG with you?

You literally

copied and pasted the same comment you made in a Mitt Romney for Kennedy's Seat diary.

Good job.

Re: Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

A lot depends on whether the Dems try to shove an other Kennedy down our throats. Like Princess Caroline. Or the one who paralyzed the girl rolling over his Jeep. Or, god help us, if a stint in a Boston rehab counts as state residency for Patrick.

The Dems could win the seat if they rally around an upstanding public servant like Martha Coakley. She was, however, a Clinton supporter, so I expect Kerry, Patrick, and the rest to carve her to pieces, thus opening the door for somebody like Schilling.

Actually

after June 3, 2008, Martha Coakley wholeheartedly supported Obama.

Of course if you would join us on the other side of June 3, 2008, you'd see that.

Re: Actually

"after June 3, 2008, Martha Coakley wholeheartedly supported Obama."

That won't matter. She will still be punished. I would look for the quotes from "unnamed Democratic sources" to start any day now.

Really, the only question here is which Kennedy they will try to shove down our throats.

Maybe Hillary Clinton

will quite her job and move to Massachusetts and run for Senate.

She does has a habit of moving to random states and running for President.

Yeah, that's right, I went there lol

You know what?

I want a Kennedy in that seat for about fifty reasons. But the number one reason is this: people like you will cry bloody murder and provide weeks of entertainment for me.

It would be entertaining

to see a Kennedy who supported Clinton running for the seat.

Talk about PUMA heads exploding.

Re: You know what?

It's hard to cry bloody murder about that Senate seat when you have a zero like John Forbes Kerry in the other seat. Even Princess Caroline would probably be more effective than that.

BTW, the knives are already coming out on Coakley. Looks like the Dems are preparing to trash another woman. Maybe they can get Duval Patrick to play the race card and call her a racist. That's always good for a few yucks.

Re: Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

People won't be fooled again in supporting a celebrity candidate, they were fooled by Arnold Schwarzenegger once, but they ain't going for it again. The republicans would be better off nominating someone in the state offices.  The state is too democratic to elect a republican, especially a celebrity at one to replace Kennedy's seat.

Re: Curt Shilling: MA US Senator?

Just show a few pictures of Schilling pitching for Bush (pun intended), and that will solve all problems...

by LordMike 2009-09-03 07:34AM | 0 recs
I doubt

The proportion of people who voted for Arnold but now live in MA is very high.

Re: I doubt

I was referring to back during Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger days(by the way if davis would of dropped out and endorsed Baustamante we wouldn't be hearing of him), they were taken into account the celebraty name and not looking at what they done for society.  I think in MA, people are going to scrutinize celebrities more so than back during the milliniem.

Re: Curt Schilling

I would never count out a popular player and the devotion of the Red Sox nation - and Mass Republicans need celebrity badly, so this could be a real worst nightmare. If nothing else, I'd say the prospect of Schilling will kill Joe Kennedy's likelihood of jumping in; he'll be a hot PR mess compared to a clean cut baseball player. On the other hand, Coakley may offer the best counterprogramming: a woman with actual service in office, who's generally well liked. And, while Schilling may be an exceptional case, the record of sports stars succeeding in elections is decidedly mixed - Schilling is no answer, in the long run, for the failure of Republicans to find a coherent national strategy or candidates who talk about winning ideas. I'd worry about him winning... I doubt he'd be a trend.
