Wilson Challenger Raises $600k+ in 24 Hours

Roughly 24 hours ago, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina took the unprecedented and despicable act of heckling the President of the United States. In the time since, Wilson's challenger Rob Miller has raised more than $600,000 from 17,000 supporters. This is the way our democracy is supposed to function -- thousands of Americans making their voices heard, rather than a small few in the crowd trying to shout down the voices of others. So kudos to those unwilling to back down in the face of the hecklers.

Re: Wilson Challenger Raises $600k+ in 24 Hours

I'm not sure it's a great day for democracy when 17,000 people donate to a guy without having any idea who he is.  But I still think it's pretty cool :)

Being NOT Joe Wilson?

Priceless.

I don't care if he's a ham on rye

He'll keep getting money from me - to paraphrase another poster - for being "Not Joe Wilson."

I beg to differ with regard to the candidate info

The web gave me access to everything I needed to know about the candidate, and south carolina is just over the border from our state.

Also bear in mind - south carolina is playing an increasingly more important role in the GOP primary as new hampshire becomes a competitive field - south carolina is often where things are being decided -

So, I think its money well spent - we're not spending in the dark. Just because someone mails me a link, doesn't mean that all I did was click on it. I do have this thing called 'tabbed browsing' you know.

Ctrl-T and pop open a new table. 12 seconds of effort yielded a wealth of info on the man.

Welcome to the blogosphere.
Lobbyists, sorry, that 600 k came with no strings attached. Please feel free to exit now. Thanks for playing.

Nice prize waiting for you backstage.

Re: Wilson Challenger Raises $600k+ in 24 Hours

Actually I feel as if, we as Americans - if we really want this to work - should just set aside 100 bucks for the year, and just every now and then when something important comes up that we need to spike forward -

I'm not saying south carolina is really all that important -but say, health care reform - or something like that - some issue.

We should just be able to drop 10 bucks 10 times through the year. It will keep things going smoothly and keep the lobbyists out of our hair.

Money well spent! Does anyone disagree?

I actually couldn't agree more. The only thing I'd add to your idea is more money if you can afford it...say, $1,000 if you have a good-paying job.

Consider it a down payment on good government.

There is a very serious point here

On the other hand I am not equipped to make it tonight.

So I guess I will have to limit to this: Fuck You Joe.

Us DFHs were kicked to the curb back in the day. We didn't like it but found we could kick in $25 bucks or so apiece and punish your sorry ass. This dollar total is mind blowing, corporations have bought Congriss Critters for a fraction of what pissed off citizens sent your opponent literally overnight.

Above written from a bar

Last night when the total was just over $200,000. Just checked and it is up to $787,000. A full year out from the election.

Consider mind officially blown.

The symbolism is important and I support Kos's push to get this to a $million ("$500,000 for each word") but realistically Miller probably has enough banked right now to support a full-blown campaign and then some. I hope the commenter above is right, because overnight this guy has become a major player in SC. For example he is now free to spend a good part of next year helping other Dems with THEIR fund-raising and so pile up some political chits.
___________
Please don't let Miller turn out to be a Blue Dog. I mean it is rural SC and I am not expectlng Barney Frank, but $1 million dollars of Progressive money is a big chunk of change.

Kossacks for Miller and Wes Clark

Nos. 1 & 3 Act Blue pages. Kossacks at $242k and Wes Clark at $41k with the Miller campaign itself in between.

Last time I remember an equivalent reaction is when Sestak's opponent criticized him for having his critically ill infant treated at an out of state hospital. Overnight Adm. Joe became a top tier challenger based on the outrage driven contributions. And now might make the next jump. In large part because some yahoo decided use a baby with cancer as part of a hit piece at her father during his first campaign.
