Targeting Specter's Vulnerability

On paper, Sestak might seem like a long-shot, but yet he's clearly convinced that a primary against Specter could succeed...so what does Joe know that we don't? Last week I speculated about the existence of internal polling that shows Specter vulnerable to negative messaging.

Over at TPMDC, Beutler posts an interview that redoubles my suspicion:

[Sestak] describes "the message" as a key issue. But what will his message be? In an interview with TPMDC, Sestak provided some clues.

"Arlen has spent the last three decades in Washington as a senator and has a lot of experience in the Washington senatorial establishment," Sestak said. "The same one that made a deal with him."

By contrast, "I come from 31 years in the military."

Furthermore, Sestak says Specter's record will haunt him. "I went to Washington to oppose the policies of President Bush," he says by way of contrast to Specter who "supported them."

Bet money that Sestak's already poll-tested those attacks against Specter, and that they proved effective. If there's enough money behind this primary to get that message out, Arlen's happy numbers from last week might nosedive fairly quick.

Re: Targeting Specter's Vulnerability

Sestak can definitely use his military background to push Specter to the left on healthcare reform. I suspect one of the reason, Webb, for example, of Virginia, favors healthcare reform w/ a strong public option is because of his experience with the military healthcare system.  I wonder if Sestak have similar beliefs as Webb?

where is the money going to come from?

Obama's team is going to try to shut down Sestak just like they shut down Congressman Steve Israel, who was thinking about challenging Kirsten Gillibrand.

I'd love to see a successful primary challenge against Specter, but the White House would apparently rather get 100 percent behind the unreliable guy they know.

i disagree...

i'm willing to bet that the administration made inquiries and was sternly turned down.  which is fine -- sestak was a hillary person anyway.

the message sestak should have tested, if he had any political savvy, was "i'm barack obama, and i need arlen spector and his seniority and leadership in the senate.  don't let me down."  i couldn't guess what rendell would say (if he was filmed for an ad), but his key contribution will be the ground troops in the middle of pennsylvania that spector could never have counted on before.

this is really a no-lose proposition for the white house.  obama supporters in pennsylvania (at least in montgomery country) are still sore about sestak's support for hillary.  they already loved arlen anyway, but the people i worked with in the penn. primary are psyched about getting out there and pounding the pavement for sen. spector.  combining that with gov. rendell's organization is merely a bonus.  sestak is the eager sacrificial lamb that will allow obama's pennsylvania operation to contine, grow and thrive in preparation for 2012.  thanks, joe!

Interesting

but realistically...Obama would be an idiot to not at least nominally throw his support behind Specter right now.

What incentive would Specter have to vote with the President if the President was going to support his primary challenger.

The question is, how much involvement will Obama have? How much does it matter?

As you've pointed out, many Obama Democrats like Specter...I think it's true many Democrats like Specter...period...so if he votes right, I don't see how he could win...and if he votes wrong, then no amount of support from Obama could save him if Sestak runs a strong issues orientated campaign.

Someone asked where the money was going to come from for Sestak? Well, the same place the money came from for Obama. Is our party's fundraising depended on what Obama does? Really? Then why are we even bothering here?

maybe you understand this differently...

but i had the impression that this administration basically recruited spector to run as a democrat.  if this is the case, then it has a much deeper obligation to see that sen. spector wins.

now i'm all for sestak getting in the race.  i think primaries are good things.  but from a more practical p.o.v., it is also an organizing tool that will allow the obama and rendell organizations to work more closely together, to coordinate their activity better.  it will give the obama organization in the state the opportunity to preen their database (who's moved? etc) and touch more swing voters.  sestak may have access to van, but he certainly won't see obama's data (with its rich supply of cell numbers, etc) nor even the data that hillary's primary organization input.

i guess i'd be shocked if president obama doesn't raise money for spector, campaign for spector and cut commercials for spector.

I doubt that Sestak has polled

He's not a poll-driven politician.

He just knows that voters agree with his takes on the issues, and that Specter is tremendously vulnerable as a venal politician.

I'm not so sure that Sestak would be an

easy pushover for Specter. I just came back from a conference last week where the Congressman was present.

Looks like Sestak might get lots of help from the defense industry with deep pockets.
