FL-Gov: Democrat Alex Sink Jumps In

Exciting news out of Florida: The state's popular Democratic CFO (akin to state Treasurer) Alex Sink is jumping in the Governor's race.
It's hard to overstate the importance of this news. While it could have been nice to see Sink run for the Senate, as she would have had a strong shot winning even against Republican Governor Charlie Crist or former Republican Speaker Marco Rubio, Sink's decision to run for Governor is actually better for the Democrats overall. Why? Among other things, the next Governor of Florida will play a role in the redistricting process in the state. Currently, the Democrats control just 10 of the state's 25 congressional districts, despite the fact that Barack Obama carried the state last fall. With a Democratic Governor in place, the GOP would have significantly more difficulty in gerrymandering the Democrats out of having a fair amount of say in the U.S. House during the coming decade. And considering that with Sink in this race, it probably leans at least a bit towards the Democrats, you can see why this is a positive development for the party.
