Schweitzer: Population Trends Hurting Homophobes

Listening to Brian Schweitzer hold forth at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last August, the following thought went through my head: Brian Schweitzer 2016! Hearing some of the courageous things he continues to say, and watching some of the great work he continues to do as Governor of Montana, I can't say I feel much differently today than I felt eight months ago.

Acknowledging the successful recent push in several states for legalizing same-sex marriage, Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D-MT), chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, observed today that those seeking to make an issue of gay marriage during the next cycle of gubernatorial contests are ill-advised.

"I think that the gay marriage issue is losing some punch," Schweitzer said during a phone interview with Hotline editors. " ... The demographic trends are working against those who are a little bit homophobic in this country."

Coming from a traditionally red state like Montana (albeit one that is becoming more and more blue), Schweitzer could stay away from talking about social issues perceived inside the Beltway to be too controversial or divisive. He could also address them, but in an anodyne way. But that's not Brian Schweitzer, a man who says what he means and means what he says. I might not have worded it exactly the same, but Schweitzer isn't wrong to say that the "demographic trends are working against those who are a little bit homophobic in this country." But to hear him put it that way is pretty noteworthy.

And for those who would like to get their Schweitzer fix this Easter Sunday afternoon, here is the Governor's rousing address from the DNC:

This is why the next year will be furious for the

Homophobes.

They know time is working against them, the Millenials have already weighed in, and the more of them entering the voting population, the more this turns against the deniers of equality.

Soon enough, it will be the Southern Red States as hold outs.

Just as they held out the last bastion of racial bigotry, so they will here as well.

One final thought on the SW and states like Montana.

I saw a commentator say, there is only ONE of the traditional hot button issues the Democrats have to stay away from, and that is guns.

Abortion and stoping gay rights are a waining issue for the Republicans in those places.

Re: This is why the next year

None other than Markos Moulitsas made the statement last week that, "the gun rights battle is over - and our side lost."

I'm not sure if it will always be that way, but for the time being, I'd say that's one of the only cultural issues left where the conservatives are still speaking for the majority.

Myself, I'm not a gun fan and I don't get it, but it's not one of my biggest concerns, either.

Re: Schweitzer

I got 4 years before I need to think about this, thank goodness.

Re: Schweitzer

Schweitzer is great. However, I've lost all hope of ever getting a President who isn't in Wall Street's hip pocket.

It's not homophobic Brian, it's called having morals.

"Hearing some of the courageous things he continues to say, and watching some of the great work he continues to do as Governor of Montana, I can't say I feel much differently today than I felt eight months ago."

I don't know if immoral and having no integrity is courageous or not, that's your call.

I'm from Montana. I didn't vote for Schweitzer. I wouldn't vote for him for President either. He's just another actor who doesn't care about Montana values.
