NY-Gov, NY-Sen: David Paterson Toxic, Rubbing Off On Gillibrand

No matter how far behind him the Caroline Kennedy mess gets, David Paterson just can't seem to gain any new upward momentum in favorability, job approval or head to head re-election match-ups. According to a new Siena Research Institute Poll (626 RVs, March 16-18, MOE +/- 3.9%):

Paterson is viewed favorably by 29 percent of voters and unfavorably by 58 percent, down from last month‟s 40-47 percent rating. His job performance rating is 19 percent positive, 78 percent negative down from 28-69 percent last month. Only 14 percent of voters are prepared to elect Paterson as Governor in 2010, compared to 67 percent who prefer "someone else." That‟s down from 19-57 percent last month. [...]

In a hypothetical 2010 Democratic primary for Governor, Cuomo leads Paterson 67-17 percent, up from last month's 53-27 percent. In December Paterson led 49-26 percent. In a potential general election matchup, Giuliani beats Paterson 56-33 percent, up from 51-36 percent last month. Paterson led 51-38 percent in December. Cuomo leads Giuliani 51-41 percent, similar to last month's 51-38 percent.

A Siena spokesman calls the speed with which Paterson's numbers are falling "staggering." While there is more than a year and a half until the election, it's difficult to see how he turns this around and really underscores how perilous being a governor these days can be.

Paterson's mis-handled Senate appointment is widely considered responsible for setting this downward spiral in motion and it turns out Paterson's unpopularity may be rubbing off on the recipient of that appointment, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. As of now, the best Gillibrand can do against a hypothetical match-up with former Governor George Pataki is a tie.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has a 26-20 percent favorable rating (down from 34-20 percent last month), with 54 percent of voters having no opinion. Former Governor George Pataki has a 49-41 percent favorable rating. While 23 percent of voters are prepared to elect Gillibrand in 2010, 37 percent prefer ,,someone else.‟ In hypothetical match-ups, Gillibrand beats Rep. Peter King 47-23 percent (up from 40-27 percent last month) and is in a dead heat (41-41 percent) against Pataki.

No doubt this tie is largely a function of name recognition but look at that trend. What is it that Sen. Gillibrand has done to earn a dropping favorability rating? Certainly nothing except be inextricably linked to the toxic Paterson. Gillibrand has plenty of time to create new associations with voters, but I don't think Paterson has the same luxury. At some point, a decision is going to have to be made and I hope all parties agree that Paterson must drop out and endorse Cuomo for governor.

Gillibrand is still unknown

and hasn't really worked to make herself more known. I think the drop in favorability might be from people who favored her when she was appointed and now have forgotten about her. (notice her unfavorables haven't changed).

Once Gillibrand kicks into campaign mode, she'll stablize fine. Pataki, a popular former three term Governor is only at 41% against an appointed Senator no one knows? yeah good luck with that.

Paterson's approval ratings though has nothing to do with the Senate appointment. It has everything to do with the budget and him getting slammed for healthcare cuts. It also has to do with his disability unfortunately...I've heard plenty of people say they don't like Paterson because he "looks stupid"

Re: Gillibrand is still unknown

Her record of being anti-immigration and flip-flopping on gay rights (just to name two) is definitely going help those ratings in a state like New York.  I predicted this when this situation. Many  said that I was wrong. Now, you are here claiming she can turn it around. Thus, we are facing a deficit with a sitting Senator who must turn it around rather than one who has momentum in his or her favor. There is no way to spin this as a positive outcome.

You are wrong

she's unknown. Her disapporval rating is 20%, by the same token, she's not unpopular either.

Re: You are wrong

You are spinning the numbers. My point remains the same- she places us at a deficit because as you admit a) she will have to be "introduced" and b) (the part you don't mention) her record will not make that introduction go over well given what political groups here think of her. There was a recent Washington Post article on the subject of her appeal to New York groups, and the hard time she's having with them based on her record. There are also other polls that have been conducted that show her as weak in the primary when other primary candidates are included.

Re: You are wrong

Here's one such article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con tent/article/2009/02/28/AR2009022800695. html?nav=hcmodule

There are others, including those running in the minority presses (African-American) and gay. Those are the two that I follow. She will need both.

Re: Why is it

Because  accurate prior predictions about how this would turn out are an important part of who on mydd accurately understands the politics involved and who does not. It's not about tauting myself, but placing the predictions being made into context. Your arguments and predictions and those of the other posters like yourself are proving to be wrong. That's a key thing to understand regarding listening to your predictions now.

haha

you're funny.  actually, i find you to be chronically incorrect.

Re: haha

Easy exercise- post a comment i made. Then post where I was incorrect in that comment.

What you believe is irrelevant to what is reality.

Re: haha

Oh- and to prevent any silly back and forths where you post a comment,a nd then do not include evidence that I was wrong- let me just add: the source that I was wrong must include actual news reports rather than your opinion. I don't expect you to do any of this. But I do want to call you on what you say.

Re: Gov.: David Paterson Toxic

I'd have to believe the caricatures of Paterson on SNL haven't helped his image.

A: A southern border!

I was very much against Gillibrand being picked

But that is nothing but spilled milk now.  The only thing we can do is force Paterson out so Cuomo can have a cleared field.

Pataki

Has he gotten beyond 42% in any poll?  I think voters just aren't comfortable with Gillibrand yet.

Gillibrand may be tainted, but what's she doing to get more acquainted with all of New York state?  She needs to go out on a listening tour at Congress' next break.

Re: NY-Gov, NY-Sen: David Paterson

Paterson has unfortunately done very little to inspire confidence.  That's not good in a situation where even the sharpest chief executive is going to get blamed for the state of things.

Gillibrand is a star and I am frankly not the least bit worried about her.

Paterson isn't going to run

I don't think...why waste time. If Cuomo beats him by that much...ANYONE will beat him in a primary.

I'd be more concerned that Cuomo only leads Giuliani by 10

Paterson endorse Cuomo?

Paterson woke up every morning for four months thinking about how he was going to screw up his work on the Senatorial appointment that day.  How could he change his pattern now?  Won't he wake up  every day and think about how to mess up the governor's race?

paterson is a disaster

but i actually think he could turn it around.

mainly because...well, is it just me or has he like not done ANYTHING in months?!  okok, i get it...albany's slow, back room, etc.  but it just seems like he hasn't done much of anything aside from pick the senate appointment and get yelled at by people at "listening tour" stops upstate.

if he actually comes out swinging, i think he can turn it around.  if he gets behind a plan to raise taxes on the rich and figures out a way to get everyone on board for an MTA bailout, i think he can pull it off.  NY is a true-blue dem state right now form top to bottom (or at least about as close as you can get).  The only way people are going to vote for a repub is if you practically force them or if something major changes in the political landscape between now and then.

if he continues to flounder, he'll get demolished in a primary, but the ultimate dem nominee should be OK (knock wood).
