"Just A Comedian"

Wow, Jim Cramer and Joe Scarborough REALLY do not seem to get the influence Jon Stewart and The Daily Show have in today's political discourse. They dismiss Stewart as "just a comedian" at their peril. Scarborough also betrays a very old school view of media when he claims that Jon Stewart can hide from everything he's ever said on The Daily Show because it doesn't publish a transcript.

Then again, maybe they DO get it. Cramer repeats the "just a comedian" line so much it does sort of seem like NBC's idea of crisis-management and a crisis is exactly what they have on their hands. If you haven't seen Stewart's two virtuoso takedowns of CNBC, do yourself a favor and watch them at the Indecision Forever blog.

Not to mention, if Stewart is "just a comedian" then why is Cramer appearing on The Daily Show on Thursday?

Re: "Just A Comedian"

Well at the 1:50 mark, Scarborough goes "No, he's not a comedian. He's an ideologue."

I'll say this I think Mr. Cramer is an entertainer. He got my coverage universe generally right but when he was wrong he was spectacularly wrong. He's not fond of equity analysts. He thinks we're over paid. Ha ha ha. How much does he make?

Barron's Magazine a few years ago highlighted The Cramer Effect (& Defect). The article said viewers who follow Jim Cramer's stock picks from his show are more than likely to lose money in the long run. And that was in 2007. You can imagine now.

Of the stocks I covered, Cramer went bullish on Whole Foods as analysts turned bearish. He likes to be contrarian. He was spectacularly wrong.

Damn. I must be getting old.

If Stewart is just a comedian, then Cramer is just a clown.

Re: "Just A Comedian"

Stewart just ripped into Cramer and CNBC again tonight.  If Cramer isn't careful, Mad Money might go the way of Crossfire.

I like Cramer

I wouldn't take his advice but I think he's an entertaining guy.  Stewart rubbed his nose in it.  Few people would have enjoyed that, deserved or not.

They'll hash it out and it'll be okay between 'em.

A lot of people took his advice.

Re: "Just A Comedian"

I want them to continue to talk. Just more material.

Re: "Just A Comedian"

John Stewart would call himself a comedian.

Jim Cramer, for all his faults (and there are many of them), is a fan of The Daily Show, and wanted to steer the conversation away from simply bashing Stewart.

In the end, Stewart's goal is making people laugh (and the Republicans-- and Cramer-- offer up far more material than the Democrats)

Re: "Just A Comedian"

Sure, Stewart is a comedian, but the dismissive "just" is the crux here.  Political comedy has been used for centuries and can be serious business, as it often speaks inconvenient truths while invoking disarming laughter.  Nazi Germany banned all political satire and subsequently many comedians were killed for speaking the truth while poking fun at the powers to be.  Comedians are often the most outspoken and only critics of leadership structures in totalitarian systems, and sometimes they pay with their lives or their freedom.

Stewart talks to common sense more than anything. He could do so as a dry commentator, writing all-important op-eds for newspapers or on online news sites.  That he chooses to administer his thoughts in comedic form should not be an excuse to devalue his message, as Cramer has done here.

Stewart says

He's just comedian.

So basically when Jon smugly shrugs his shoulders and says "I'm just a comedian," and when Cramer calls him a comedian it's two different things I guess.

Bottom Line is

Someone here on this blog needs to tell me if Jon is a comedian or not?????!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Stewart says
When Jon calls himself a comedian, he means that he is meant to be funny but when Craner calls him a comedian, he means he is a joke. I guess that is the downside of being funny. Eh, let them underestimate him, maybe he will pull a Crossfire on their collective ass.

Re: "Just A Comedian"

The sad fact is that Stewart could have picked any number of media outlets/talking heads and the same facts would be true.  The days of "confronting the powerful" by the MSM is dead and gone.  That's the ultimate shame here.
