Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

Via the New York Times:

President Obama has settled on Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, a key ally with a record of working across party lines, as his top choice for secretary of health and human services, advisers said Wednesday.

Should she be nominated, Ms. Sebelius would bring eight years of experience as her state's insurance commissioner as well as six years as a governor running a state Medicaid program. But with Mr. Obama about to begin a drive to expand health coverage -- an issue on which the parties have deep ideological divisions -- her strongest asset in the White House view may be her record of navigating partisan politics as a Democrat in one of the country's most Republican states.

Your thoughts?

Update [2009-2-18 20:18:45 by Jonathan Singer]: To tack on, as you can see from the article, the actual reporting on the story seems to be less strong than the article's lede; that is to say while the first graf says that the President has "settled on" Kathleen Sebelius to be his Health and Human Services Secretary, the subsequent grafs suggest that the decision hasn't necessarily been "settled" yet. (See: "It remained unclear whether the White House would finish vetting Ms. Sebelius in time to finalize her nomination by next week. Advisers described her as “the leading candidate” and said there were no others to mention, although they emphasized no final decision has been made.")

That said, this report does seem more solid that the initial reporting a week and a half ago that Sebelius was a very possible HHS pick. And if she can bring to bear on President Obama's behalf anywhere close to the skills she brought to the 2008 campaign on then-candidate Obama's behalf, as well as those that she applied in Kansas to great effect, she would be a very positive addition to the cabinet.

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

Is she going to resign and run for senate in 2010? Probably not.

Uhh Dean's not doing anything....

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

I'm okay with it.  I seriously suspect Dean doesn't want a job in Washington, and Sebelius is certainly credible.  Good choice.

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

So much for Sen. Kathleen Sebelius D-KS. Now our only real shot to pick on the seat by nutjob Brownback has passed us by. She will do a fantastic job as HHS though, so i congratulate her!

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

My thoughts?? This sucks, Dean would have been MUCH better.

Welcome to your DLC Party folks, enjoy.

Dean wouldn't have worked

I'm sorry, but he wouldn't have. Whether it's his fault or not, he would have become a polarizing lightning rod that would've held up any meaningful reform needed, plus if anything did get passed, either egos would explode or the media would make up stories about egos exploding (Is Dean upstaging the President?).

Dean would have worked if he was still the little known Governor of Vermont, now, not so much.

Plus, did Dean even want a job in the administration?

Re: Dean wouldn't have worked

Completely agree. As someone else put he is a "polarizing moderate." There is no win out of that. I supported Dean for prez but I do not support him for a cabinet position. We can't give the Repubs a face to demonize in the health care battle. This will be a fight and Sebelius is a fighter with a likeable and low-key demeanor. That matters.

Let me be clear

I don't dislike Dean...if I had my way, he wouldn't be my choice for HHS, he'd be chosing a HHS secretary.

But I just don't think he works here at this moment.

Re: Dean wouldn't have worked

Yes, I know we Progressives should just send in our money and shut the hell up. I got it.

Keep your damn money

Really, I'm getting fucking sick and tired of some progressives throwing hissy fits when they don't get their way 100% of the time.

Like children. So we disagree with you, no one is telling you to shut the hell up.

Re: Dean wouldn't have worked

Oh, it's completely his own fault. He said outrageous crap all the time. He was one of our most promising leaders, but he just didn't have control of what came out of his mouth. When tensions run high, we can't risk the HHS secretary saying that Republicans are being argumentative and unpatriotic. Sebelius has lots of experience talking to and working with Republicans. Dean does not.

Disagree on Dean

Dean would have worked if you split running HHS from the health reform effort.  However, he does not have the coalition building skills necessary to lead a health reform effort.  The things that made him a great DNC Chair such as settling on a strategy and telling everyone to piss off would have been horrible for universal health care.  Passing it will be like threading a needle.

I think Sebelius is a good choice although I am bummed we won't have her to run for Senate in 2010.  She did a lot of good stuff on health insurance when she Kansas Insurance Commissioner.

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

Alan Greenspan is turning socialist, and Barack Obama is putting Republicans in charge of reforming health care. What's wrong with this picture?

Mr. President--you won! It's okay to stack the deck in favor of your own agenda. Unless your agenda is bipartisanship for its own sake.

What if Sebelius turns out to be a corn-fed version of Judd Gregg but won't resign?

Republicans?

Last time I checked Kathleen Sebelius was a Democrat, and a rather progressive one at that.

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

Yea, she'd be a great choice but I think the President would be far better served with her winning the senate seat in 2010.  Gotta stop playing nice with these "scum sucking" Republicans. Hit them hard and hit them often and keep good people in the picture for Senate and House.

I'm not so sure she'd win

the budget fiasco in Kansas may take a toll on her popularity.

Plus if she ever had any intention of running for Senate, I doubt she would ever consider a cabinet job.

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

I am frankly not certain how we got hung up on the notion that the identity of the HHS secretary is somehow an indispensable component of the fight for universal health care.  I am skeptical that this is the case.

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

Really? You say this seeing how badly our wonderful Congressmen messed up the Stimulus package? I think having someone to really push for this is essential, and more importantly, makes it clear that our government is not run by a "Decider" any more than a baseball team is run by its General Manager. He takes the longview, but he has to have someone in place that would be good at keeping it from getting out of control.

Re: Kathleen Sebelius at HHS

I'm sure she's just fine, but where does that leave us with the likelihood of having a Dem Gov in Kansas?

by nikkid 2009-02-18 06:16PM | 0 recs
The Lt. Gov is a Democrat

and she was term limited anyway.
