NY-Gov: David Paterson Still In Trouble Against Cuomo

A new Quinnipiac Poll spells trouble for David Paterson in the 2010 gubernatorial primary against Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. It's a long ways away, of course, but this poll makes clear that New Yorkers just can't seem to let go of the bad taste the Caroline Kennedy debacle left in their mouths.

The Caroline Kennedy caper continues to bedevil New York Gov. David Paterson as he trails Attorney General Andrew Cuomo 55 - 23 in an early look at a 2010 Democratic primary for Governor, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. [...]

New York State voters approve 45 - 41 percent of the job Paterson is doing, his lowest approval rating in 11 months as Governor and down from 50 - 30 percent January 26.

Voters disapprove 52 - 35 percent of the way Paterson handled the appointment of a U.S. Senator to fill Hillary Clinton's seat. Disapproval is similar across the political spectrum.

These numbers represent a decline for Paterson since a Sierra Research Institute poll taken in late January.

Quinnipiac also finds that Paterson performs far more weakly against Rudy Giuliani in a hypothetical match-up (43-43) than Cuomo does (51-37,) numbers that, if they persist, should compel Cuomo to get in the race next year. Of course, if Paterson had done the thing that was both in his own interest politically and that the people of New York wanted, which was to name Cuomo, his biggest primary threat, to the Senate seat, this would be a moot point. Ironically, in what turned out to be an overly arduous attempt to make the safest choice possible and to "first do no harm", Paterson ended up endangering his own career.

I thought conventional thinking was Patterson

chose Gillibrand to help him electorally, particularly upstate?

Doesn't sound like he got much bang for the buck....

Re: NY-Gov: David Paterson

I still totally don't get this bizzarro obcession with Kennedy.   She didn't get picked ... good.  She didn't deserve it.

But many can't seem to stop whining about it.  I thought Chris Matthews was going to cry talking about it on his show.

Maybe its a lot of older folks like him hoping to relive some percieved "glory days."

Re: NY-Gov: David Paterson

People do not like the way it went down. It's less about her than what it symbolizes. Everyone knows the reason Gillibrand was choosen had little to do with her views representing those of the bulk of the people of the state. That's the reality. I think pretending otherwise is exactly why you are seeing this response in the polls.

Hmmmmmm

Not sure where you are getting this is some obsession with Kennedy, I think the article implies that Patterson looked like a doof in the way he handled the appointment in general?

But, nice to know YOU are still fascinated by Kennedy, following Matthews and all worried and stuff.

The rest of us have moved on, but you're still carrying the torch it seems?

I've had more than a few people

Paterson looks like a doof in general.

Also, he's been blasted hard on his budget cuts. Every 20 minutes, there is a commercial running showing a man in a wheelchair asking why Paterson is cutting money to hospitals.

I sorta think that's causing him more problems than Caroline Kennedy.

you would seem to be wrong

It's not Caroline Kennedy

it's the budget cuts.

Running commericals showing a man in a wheelchair saying Governor Paterson is going to cause his hospital to close down and another showing two parents in a car with a dying kid driving up to a closed hospital is doing more damage to Paterson than this Caroline Kennedy thing, which most people I talk to have forgotten about.

The media just likes the Kennedy drama, it's more interesting than the budget.

Progressive

If the progressive wing of the party were smart, it would convince Nadler (I believe that's his name) to run because with the split vote in the primary, a progressive could win the primary pretty easily, and given the dynamics of partisanship in the state- we could win the Senate seat.

I don't get it

Don't see why the C Kennedy debacle is Patterson's problem, unless New Yorkers really wanted Caroline K.

Seems like the budget debacle would be a bigger issue.

Re: I don't get it

That's because the budget debacle is the problem is the real.  Paterson didn't handle the Senate appointment well but he is pretty much screwed on the budget regardless of what he does.  The stimulus dollars will help but with a $15 billion hole to fill Paterson is going to have to cut some services even if a tax increase on the wealthy is passed.  This hole is too big to be filled by a tax increase alone.

The cuts would've been more understandable

if he had tried everything, including the milllionaire's tax, prior to cutting in the budget.

Re: The cuts would've been more understandable

Agreed.  I support a tax increase but there is no getting around that there will be service cuts too.

Re: NY-Gov: David Paterson Still In Trouble

Not looking good for Paterson but it is a long, long way between now and Sept 2010.  Polls now are mainly showing unhappiness with the state budget which is a mess.  While I support a tax increase on the wealthy that alone is not going to solve NYs budget problems which are a culmination of bad fiscal management going all the way back to the last days of Mario Cuomo.
