Democrat Takes Lead in NY-23 Special Election

With the political environment being so good for the Republicans, presumably they'd be leading in the special election race to fill a seat their party vacated in a district that has been sending Republicans to Congress for more than a century. Or maybe not.

Democrat Bill Owens has come from behind to open a slim lead over Republican Dede Scozzafava in the race for the 23rd Congressional District seat, according to an independent poll released today.

If he holds onto his lead, Owens, a political newcomer, would become the first Democrat to represent the rural 11-county district of Northern and Central New York since the Civil War era.

Owens erased a 7 percentage point deficit in the past two weeks and is now the frontrunner with 33 percent of likely voters, the Siena College poll found.

Owens leads Scozzafava by 4 percentage points and Conservative Doug Hoffman by 10 points, according to the poll taken this week by the Siena Research Institute.

Not only has Republican Dede Scozzafava lost her lead, according to Siena polling, Politico reports that she is more or less out of money and virtually without help from the Republican National Committee going into the home stretch.

At some point, if this really is destined to be a great cycle for the Republicans, they have to start winning, right? This poll isn't all roses for the Democrats; the Republican and Conservative party candidates combine to receive a little over 50 percent of the vote -- in line with what the GOP would normally take in this type of a district, but a majority nonetheless. Still, shouldn't a race like this be easy for the Republicans to hold if indeed they are on the verge of retaking the House?

Democrat Takes Lead in NY-23 Special Election

Owens and the DCCC should be careful about running negative adds at this point.  If they knock one of his opponents low enough they will himerage support to the other and he'll lose.  They have done a great job pitting the Republican establishment against their crazier base but its time for owens to start convincing the 23rd that he's the best choice.

Re: Democrat Takes Lead in NY-23 Special Election

This is an election that really shows you who is running the Republican Party these days.  Scozzafava is getting no support because, basically, the base sees her as a total RINO (probably a fair assessment) and they would rather throw their support behind the wingnut on the third-party ticket instead.  The party is so afraid to get involved and face the wrath of the base that they may very well let a Democrat win by sitting out.

You wouldn't see this on the Democratic side.  Heck, if anything, our party goes too far in the other direction, lending institutional support to "electable" moderates in even races where a progressive could have a legitimate shot.  But what the GOP is doing here is just kinda nuts.

Dems are lucking out because of local GOP screwup

It's hard to draw any firm conclusions from such a bizarre race.  Scozzafava was selected by the local GOP party chairs to be the GOP candidate.  Scozzafava supports employee free choice, the cap and trade bill, the stimulus, and is both pro-choice and pro-gay marriage.  Why they would choose a candidate who holds views consistent with a mainstream democrat (not even a blue-dog), is hard to understand.  What isn't hard to understand is that, having chosen a candidate with these views, she drew a challenge from the right and is getting no support from the national party.  She's already out of money.  Before this is all said and done, it wouldn't surprise me if this boiled down to a race between Owens and Hoffman.
