"Steele Democrat"

Not much more than two years ago, the new chairman of the Republican National Committee was campaigning like this (photo originally from TPM):

That's right, the man the Republicans just chose to head their party campaigned to hide his party affiliation during his 2006 bid for the Senate in Maryland. That ought to energize the GOP base.

Re: "Steele Democrat"

Steele is a wingnut. I am glad this will knock down the GOP morale, but I hope we are not so short-sighted as to think that us giving him creds as a "moderate" is a good idea. This is the subtle implication of your post.  Stoller made the same mistake a few weeks ago at OpenLeft

Loved how the big sign as the S

But the small ones, the actual yard signs, don't.

He wasn't trying to be deceptive or something, eh?

Still Democrat

They talk different in Maryland.

Steele is pronounced Still.

Who do they think they're fooling?

Larry King?

Wolf Blitzer?

Mostly I think it's Hannity and O'Reilly's audience of over 50 white dipsticks.

"Wow, look. Now we Republicans are really going to cut into Obama's base...."

all I can say is

God I miss Steve Gilliard.

He used to skewer Steele regularly during that campaign.

In fairness

he meant it like "Reagan Democrat."

Is the argument that Reagan also tried to hide party affiliation?
