A Pharmacy Full Of Poison Pills!

This could go on forever:

Republican lawmakers are raising concerns that ACORN, the low-income advocacy group under investigation for voter registration fraud, could be eligible for billions in aid from the economic stimulus proposal working its way through the House.

House Republican Leader John Boehner issued a statement over the weekend noting that the stimulus bill wending its way through Congress provides $4.19 billion for "neighborhood stabilization activities."

Does anyone think Boehner really cares about ACORN?

Any predictions on which stimulus provision Republicans will cherry-pick and culture-war next?

well

if it wasnt already, this is just open hostility. The Dems need to come out and beat back this narrative before it takes hold.

Agreed

Boehner is feeling his oats.

And the next one up is probably Food Stamps.

Re: A Pharmacy Full Of Poison Pills!

I understand saying ACORN means something to the ditto heads but why does it mean something to the press? Everytime he makes this claim why aren't they asking him why ACORN can't get money. Eventhough they aren't really getting all or even most of that money. If they did their jobs they would immediately upon asking what his beef is with ACORN and upon finding out his answer would scour any legilslation that he voted for that gave money to organizations or companies that were brought up on allegations or were found guilty of crimes. You wouldn't have to look far.

Re: A Pharmacy

You know what.  The Republicans are being Republicans here but that doesn't mean that they may not raise a good point at times.

What is neighbarhood stimulization and how will that boost the economy?    I would like to know the answer to those two questions.

I can understand a lot of things that I normally wouldn't agree with.  Give a town money to build a new swimming pool, or fix up its golf course.   That is fine.   Both will create some jobs and maybe some future revenue for the towns.

But I was reading where one county in the northeast was going to provide (not as part of this stimulis packaged) rain water collectors to residents in a disadvantaged neighborhood.  WTF?   There is no drought there?   Most of the homes in the neighborhood probably don't even have gutters to connect to the collection barrel.   Its just a dumb waste of money.

I use this as an example of the type of dumb spending I fear litters this bill.

Build windmills, dams,  turbines, roads, bridges, schools, and courthouses ... that will create jobs, and create infrastructure that will serve us for decades.    Save the feel good handouts for another day.

for neighborhood stabilization activities related to emergency assistance for the redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes as authorized under division B, title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008

Kargo X makes a good point at Congress Matters about this issue http://www.congressmatters.com/storyonly /2009/1/27/141652/323/529/482

Re: A Pharmacy

Did a quick google search on "neighborhood stabilization activities" after the first story about ACORN getting billions was this Montana government website
http://comdev.mt.gov/CDD_CDBG_NSP.asp

Says the following: "The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)'s new Neighborhood Stabilization Program will provide emergency assistance to state and local governments to acquire and redevelop foreclosed properties that might otherwise become sources of abandonment and blight within their communities. The Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) provides grants to every state and certain local communities to purchase foreclosed or abandoned homes and to rehabilitate, resell, or redevelop these homes in order to stabilize neighborhoods and stem the decline of house values of neighboring homes. The program is authorized under Title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008."

So these grants 4.19 billion worth are to insure that homeowners don't lose value in there homes due to large numbers of foreclosures going on around them. It allows anyone to apply for grants so these properties can be taken off the books of whoever owns them. A large number REO's are not good on the books for banks.

Re: A Pharmacy

Sounds like a worthy cause.  I'm looking at buying a house (my first one) and nothing says "Don't buy here" like a blighted property.

flashback to 1993

Who remembers how the GOP was able to create a media firestorm over Bill Clinton's budget that included money for midnight basketball?

Even though Poppy Bush's administration had supported midnight basketball funding, it suddenly became a symbol of wasteful and misguided Democratic spending once Clinton was president.

Obama better figure out soon that the Republicans are not negotiating with him in good faith.

Re: flashback to 1993

Bingo - Not only will the repugs make him own it, no matter what incarnation takes hold, but then they will abandon any responsibility associated with its creation in Congress.

They will get the narrative, and it leaves Obama very little wiggle room. Beat them back, and hard.

Re: A Pharmacy Full Of Poison Pills!

Oh snore, ACORN again.  I hope people figured out during the election campaign that no one gets agitated over this issue except the hardcore right-wingers.  Let them scream about it all they like.  ACORN does a lot of good work and if we aren't allowed to pass any bill that helps out neighborhood organizations for fear that some of the money might go to ACORN, a lot of people are going to get hurt.

What next, Bill Ayers or Rashid Khalidi?

Maybe Jeremiah Wright.

Re: A Pharmacy Full Of Poison Pills!

Billions? That's just not even possible. Millions might be but I suspect Boehner is just blowing smoke.

And why is the Congressman from Ohio always so tanned? I'm always struck by this, that and his rigidity but that at least I suspect is from having something up his  . . .
