It's The Integrity, Stupid

Some in the media and in Washington -- even Democrats -- persist in their deluded claims that John McCain is too "honorable" to have authorized the dishonest attacks that his campaign has levied against Barack Obama. "Surely John McCain did not know about the ad claiming that Barack Obama was calling Sarah Palin a pig!", they cry, "he has way too much integrity!"

In the last 24 hours, McCain himself has left no doubt that whatever integrity he once had is in tatters on the floor.

Last night at the candidate forum on service, John McCain acknowledged the bitter tone of the campaign but, as he did with David Broder in August, passed the buck and blamed it on, of all people, Barack Obama.

First of all, this is a tough business. Second of all, I think the tone of this whole campaign would have been very different if Senator Obama had accepted my request for us to appear in townhalls all over America.

So much for personal responsibility, eh John?

Then this morning, on The View -- which, it should be noted, was perhaps the hardest hitting interview John McCain has been subjected to -- McCain addressed the lipstick on a pig ad and, not surprisingly, gave his full seal of approval (you hear that Tweety? Carville?):

MCCAIN: Actually they are not lies and if you've seen some of the ads that are running against me...Senator Obama chooses his words very carefully, OK? He shouldn't have said it. He shouldn't have said it. He chooses his words very carefully and this is a tough campaign.

For me, any shred of integrity McCain had was gone well before 2008, but certainly he sealed it with his comments earlier this summer that Barack would "rather lose a war than an election." So, it's nice to see the Obama campaign turn McCain's own words against him in response to McCain's defense of his indefensible ad on The View today.

Today on "The View," John McCain defended his campaign's latest ad campaign, which has been debunked repeatedly as both false and sleazy. In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election.

Notice how they manage to go after his integrity while also tying him to Bush? This is, I think, a far more effective attack on McCain than the out of touch thing, particularly because it goes to his character and his entire "Country First" narrative -- in other words, it goes after his perceived strengths. Perhaps more important, it also taps into the disgust many former McCain supporters are already feeling toward him right now. Even before the Obama campaign released the above statement, a lifelong Republican I know -- and new Obama supporter -- wrote this to me this morning in response to McCain's persistently dishonest campaign:

It makes me sick! McCain used to be the standard for integrity in the Republican Party. Now, it seems that he has become just another party hack. "Country First?" No, it appears to be "Election First!" What happened to "I rather be right that elected."

Let's see if they implement the other planks in my cunning plan.

Re: It's The Integrity, Stupid

Personally I see the strident, deceitful and increasingly incredible claims of the McCain campaign as a sign of inherent, structural weakness and, one assumes, such bad internal polling that such tactics are justified by desperation.  And the timing is way off, usually this stuff is dropped in the last fortnight of the campaign before it can be digested, debunked and the inevitable backlash received.  And I'm not the only one:

Some believe this is just GOP hardball. But it actually isn't. They're usually not this stupid. If you are going to broadcast a series of outrageous, demonstrable lies to smear your opponent, you tend to to that in the last two weeks of a campaign, so the lies can actually stick before they are debunked. But in September?

I know many people believe that the American people - especially the under-informed swing voters - are too dumb to know when they are being lied to. But these lies are so obvious that this cannot be true. And the sheer viciousness of the personal attacks on Obama make Rove's attack on McCain in 2000 seem mild.

Here's what I think. I think McCain is out of it. I think he checked out of his own campaign and handed it over to Schmidt and his fellow Rovians. This does not mean he does not have total responsibility. John McCain is now for ever a despicable and dishonest and dishonorable man. He has destroyed his reputation. But he is also trying to do what he can to win this election. My view is: if this is how he intends to win this election, he has mis-timed his lies.

So my assumption is that this is all about trying to get into Obama's head and get him to make a mistake. Which is why Obama needs now more than ever to stay calm and confident and focused.

This from a former McCain acolyte, incidentally.  Steady as she goes, folks, I think we're winning this thing if we stay with the game-plan and hammer the economy until there is no other issue.

And what's with the:

"First of all, this is a tough business. Second of all, I think the tone of this whole campaign would have been very different if Senator Obama had accepted my request for us to appear in townhalls all over America"

That whole thing sounds like the classic "why do you make me beat you" battered spouse defense, or the "if she had not been dress that way" rape defense.

It is condescending as all hell.  As if Obama is a child, and McCain is the abusive parent just trying to show him some "tough love".

Re: It's The Integrity, Stupid
Thank you, Todd!
I think the Palin pick was desperation, and I think these ads are as well.
Even David Brooks (in a piece on NPR this afternoon) called McCain "a bit egregious".
He also seems less than impressed with Sarah Palin, calling her "awfully aggressive" (with her talk about Russia) in the interview with Gibson.

Re: It's The Integrity, Stupid

I've lived in AZ for McCain's entire political career. He's never had a shred of integrity. His offices in Congress have always had a revolving door for lobbyists.

Those who have integrity never lose it. Only the pretense of integrity can be lost by those who never had it.

You're now not only looking stupid, you're becoming repetitive with this bizarre line. No one knows what you're talking about, and by this point, no one cares.

Re: It's The Integrity, Stupid

I agree, that was a brilliant move to use the 2000 campaign as a way to critique and shame McCain, and also tie McCain to Bush.  Feeds the meme that McCain, the one time maverick, has sold his soul to the devil to win the election, even stooping to doing the very evil that Bush did to him in 2000.

Re: It's The Integrity, Stupid

And even better, let the media do it for us:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The "Straight Talk Express" has detoured into doublespeak.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain, a self-proclaimed tell-it-like-it-is maverick, keeps saying his running mate, Sarah Palin, killed the federally funded Bridge to Nowhere when, in fact, she pulled her support only after the project became a political embarrassment. He said Friday that Palin never asked for money for lawmakers' pet projects as Alaska governor, even though she has sought nearly $200 million in earmarks this year. He says Obama would raise nearly everyone's taxes, when independent groups say 80 percent of families would get tax cuts instead.

Even in a political culture accustomed to truth-stretching, McCain's skirting of facts has stood out this week. It has infuriated and flustered Obama's campaign, and campaign pros are watching to see how much voters disregard news reports noting factual holes in the claims.

McCain's persistence in pushing dubious claims is all the more notable because many political insiders consider him one of the greatest living victims of underhanded campaigning.

Charles Babington - Analysis: McCain's claims skirt facts, test voters AP 12 Sep 08

And that's the AP, arguably one of the more egregious apologists for McCain's earlier indiscretions with the truth.  These AP wire service stories are reprinted in regional and small town papers all over the country.  The McCain campaign's 'war on the media' is a battle of attrition and they should have saved for the last weeks of the campaign, I'm thinking.  Hard to see the upside for them here, among independents and swing voters, at least.

Check out Tomorrows NY Times

They almost use the L word in the first paragraphs

Harsh advertisements and negative attacks are a staple of presidential campaigns, but Senator John McCain has drawn an avalanche of criticism this week from Democrats, independent groups and even some Republicans for regularly stretching the truth in attacking Senator Barack Obama's record and positions.

Stretching!

Mr. Obama has also been accused of distortions, but this week Mr. McCain has found himself under particularly heavy fire for a pair of headline-grabbing attacks. First the McCain campaign twisted Mr. Obama's words to suggest that he had compared Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, to a pig after Mr. Obama said, in questioning Mr. McCain's claim to be the change agent in the race, "You can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig." (Mr. McCain once used the same expression to describe Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's health plan.)

Distortions and Twisting!

Then he falsely claimed that Mr. Obama supported "comprehensive sex education" for kindergartners (he supported teaching them to be alert for inappropriate advances from adults).

FALSELY!

Those attacks followed weeks in which Mr. McCain repeatedly, and incorrectly, asserted that Mr. Obama would raise taxes on the middle class, even though analysts say he would cut taxes on the middle class more than Mr. McCain would, and misrepresented Mr. Obama's positions on energy and health care.

repeatedly, and incorrectly... misrepresented

Then this gem buried for "balance"

Mr. Sipple, the Republican strategist, voiced concern that Mr. McCain's approach could backfire. "Any campaign that is taking liberty with the truth and does it in a serial manner will end up paying for it in the end," he said. "But it's very unbecoming to a political figure like John McCain whose flag was planted long ago in ground that was about `straight talk' and integrity.

AL DAVIS AND JOHN MCCAIN 1 of a Kind

One of a kind.  "Just win baby!"  That's what this comes down to.  Obama must call on the democratic party to unite against this slime.  He can NOT do it by himself.  If the Democratic party really wants the Executive Branch back, were going to need to see more current congress and senate members holding daily conference calls and press conferences rebutting this shit that McCain is trying to smear at Obama.  Sometimes I wonder if we want it more than they do, because if we did we would fight back guns blazing.

Re: It's The Integrity, Stupid

So why IS Team McCain doing this?  Desperation.  How were things trending going into the DNC convention...pretty badly against McCain.  He was getting SOME traction from the "celebrity" ads, but nothing Obama could not overcome.  And then Obama delivers that nomination acceptance speach.  That HAD to just cause the bottom of the Repubs stomachs to fall out.  Obama was not screwing up.  He was not tripping.  He was looking presidential and getting a lot of off-hand glances from even some Republicans...those who were not leaving the party to become independants.  What to do?

Well, the best way to get attention is to do something unexpected.  And you can get even MORE attention if you do something unexpected and RASH.  And maybe you need to do something about the real base of the Republican party which does not seem to like you very much.  Oh, and you need to do something to neutralize Obama and appeal to HIS base.  Hmmmmmm...how about a ultra-conservative unknown white female governor who was also a beauty contestant?  And we happen to have one right here in deep-freeze...but we gotta be QUICK to stomp out any "bounce" Obama will get from his convention speech, so instead of even spending another 24-48 hrs vetting her, lets roll her out on Friday morning.  Aren't we smart?  By the way, noone will like seeing a young black man attack a "Mrs. Cleaver lookalike" young WHITE woman, even if she deserves it.  And maybe it will make Obama into that ANGRY BLACK man we want to cast him as...)

And they got a LOT of attention, and they loved it.  Never mind that now Palin has eclipsed the Presidential nominee.  Now they are getting lots of donations AND lots of people are turning out at the rallys...to see Palin (ooops).

But they have problems...Palin was not vetted.  And she was bleeding integrity from the get-go...we need a distraction.  Well, we have a LOT of momentum and things are starting to go our way, time for a traditional republican mud-and-smear campaign to distract from our tickets problems...it just comes naturally.  And it seems to be working,so pour more fuel on that fire.

Except...

...they are desperate comes back to mind.  They gambled big and it looks like it is working.  Now they are cornered and cocky.  But really cornered.  They have DEFINED THEMSELVES as DESPERATE.  And that they will do ANYTHING.  And they HAD to do it a good 5 weeks too early...now the idea is floating that they will lie to win, period.  Obama has taken some shots and he is not delving to their depth to recover...maybe he is the real deal and NOT just a suit with soothing words...

BUT.

Obama needs to step up, and soon.  IF he really is what he thinks and says he is, NOW is the time to show true leadership and the way forward.  I think there was some shell shock in the fact that McCain really did turn into a typical republican, mean streak, lying and cheating his way to the top.  I know I am surprised he has gotten into the role of typical GOPer so easily.

So Mr. Obama, what are you going to do to show that you really are the "man of hope" and the right leader to take us into change in a way we can accept?  You seem to have the talent, but can you connect?  I am waiting for you to SHOW me that you are not a typical politician and that you really do have a NEW way to not only deal with politics, but also a NEW and BETTER way to win the hearts AND minds of America.

I am waiting and I still believe.
