Open Thread

Campbell Brown did her job today taking on Tucker Bounds on Sarah Palin's lack of national security experience. Maybe one day it won't be exceptional when the media hoists Republicans on their own petard. In the meantime this is very satisfying viewing.

What else is going on tonight?

Re: Open Thread

You know it's funny to watch Republicans just make shit up on the fly. Honestly, with that kind of talent they many Republican operatives need to consider applying to be writers in Hollywood.

I can't decide whether to give this a 0 for being stupid, or a 2 for being funny-stupid.  So I'll just leave it alone...

no, but check out tonight's Charlie Rose

Charlie Rose had a good 'un tonight (he did it live).

I caught the last third - mostly about Palin, what I saw.  Guests included Charlie Cook, Cokie Roberts, Al Hunt, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Mark Halperin, Ed Rollins, Ed Rogers, Walter Isaacson.

The (lack of) vetting was the topic I saw.  Halperin made the point that the press now smells blood - the next 72 hours will tell.

Re: Open Thread

Personally, I'm not all that impressed.  Certainly, she threw in a lot of objections, but she let Bounds off the hook on the "name one decision" question when she had him dead to rights, and then she let him get away with a long recitation of the Republican talking points at the end, which is likely all most viewers will remember.

people aren't stupid. well they are stupid, but not that stupid.

I suspect by that point...

people had tuned him out.

I Agree

Brown did well sticking to the question and not letting Bounds divert, deceive, and dissemble until the end. But then she gave a good 30 seconds to spew pure unadulterated nonsense and let it go. She should have cut him off or if she was going to let him spew, she needed to end up pointing out how unbelievable his spew was. Furthermore, the main point is mccain's duplicity and she let Bounds veer off to talk about Palin leading the national guard in some capacity.

Re: Open Thread

On MSNBC there is another McCain talking head hitting all the talking points and dodging the questions.  And she just said that Palin, as a mother of 5, should be "begging the Democrats for hand outs."  That makes me feel a little better about the ignorance that a Dem just spouted on CNN.

It seems to me that both camps need to get the message a little tighter around Palin and McCain's judgement on the VP slot.

Re: Open Thread

Agree that both camps need to tighten up.

The Republican talking head on MSNBC was definitely B-league material.

Quotes like (paraphrasing) "The LIBERALS are clearly threatened by the Palin pick, otherwise they wouldn't be attacking her."  Just not gonna get it done, thankfully.

Re: Open Thread

I saw that... the guy from Mother Jones kicked the shit out of her... THe end exchange was priceless...   He nailed her hard and you could tell she was rattled.   Someone needs to teach her that you don't wear shiny lip gloss on TV unless its a movie about hookers.  Who does the makeup for some of these women (and I'm talking on both sides)?

October Surprise

Every cycle, the media loves to anticipate an October surprise. As I recall we didn't have one in '04, and in 2000 it was the Bush Kennebunkport DUI stuff.

Any thoughts on if or what there might be this year? I'm sure both sides would love to have something like a big endorsement (Colin Powell?) or big dirt (Cindy McCain buys another house?) for Halloween weekend.

So, what do youse think?

Re: October Surprise

I'm not sure WHAT... Obama has been under the spotlight for nearly 2 years... I'm not sure what else is out there unless Ayers bombs a building or Wright does something stupid... but the Ayers stuff is Bullshit and he seems to have distanced himself from Wright effectively.    As for McCain, he has been in the public light and run twice for President.  I'm not sure what else is out there to find.    Of course it could be something stupid like a gaffe or buying a house.

Palin and Biden may be the more likely culprits.  Biden is probably well vetted, but could say something stupid.  Palin looks to be dumping everything now...

However, if I were a betting man, I'd bet that it will be the surprise conviction of Palin and the not surprise conviction of Stevens.

Bad week for Republicans

If they weren't mad before, all the republicans should be furious with McCain for this senseless VP pick.  I feel bad for the Republicans who are tasked to defend this pick. It's not their fault McCain picked this person.

How much easier for the Republicans would it have been if McCain had picked Romney . If McCain wanted to kowtow to his base, he should have gone with Huckabee.  These are solid VP choices. No surprise. Plain vanilla. Romney and Huckabee will not screw up a debate. They have already gone through all the questions before.  Once chosen, it would be over in a day and life would go on.

Now you have this VP pick in Palin that adds all this drama that just don't belong in presidential politics.

You feel bad... for the Republicans?  For the slimy ones who run their campaigns?

Save your empathy for people with souls.

Re: Open Thread

In my view, this is probably a short term victory for the truth

In general, I find Campbell Brown very unreliable - her unsympathetic take on the truth, especially as it relates to Obama, make her very prone to over-correct if the Right wing blogs start giving her a hard time on this

Re: Open Thread

This shows you what Republican women (other than the fundies) think about Palin.

They don't like her.  Period.

Re: Open Thread

Campbell Brown seemed to be asking tough questions, but she did it an entirely apologetic way. The only thing missing from the shot was her winking at Mr. Bounds as he spouted his bullshit. What's important is that he never answered her "tough" question, and, in the end, she gave him the opportunity to recite his Republican talking points. I especially loved the part where she said "no one's arguing with you that [McCain] has more experience than Barack Obmam." I'm not sure we all agree with Ms. Brown on that last point.

I didn't read it that way

I've no special respect for her, but in this case, she seemed to be totally playing with him, openly mocking him.

Re: Open Thread

Wow, you know it's bad when the Republicans can't spin their way out of it.  Palin is the most inexperienced Vice Presidential Candidate on a major party's ticket in modern history, which isn't exactly a good thing for a party that has been pounding the importance of experience for the past year or so.  All the Republicans can say is "It's about the top of the ticket" or amusingly try to make Palin out to be experienced.  Both arguments are failing miserably...

I know McCain had to throw a Hail Mary, but I mean did Sen. Hutchinson turn him down or something?  Palin is sinking this already troubled campaign and I'm loving every second of it.

Re: Open Thread

People on here are far too cocky. The Republicans bullshitted their way into the White House, and they've bullshitted the American public AND gotten away with it for a long time. Don't believe for one second that Palin will neccessarily be the downfall of McCains bid.The American people have clearly demonstrated that they can be easily fooled.

Re: Open Thread

This is the  Republican  version of Ralph Kramden going  "Homina Homina Homina Homina".Some of you will know what I'm referring to.

The  F##!!ing audacity  of the lying bastards  in that party never ceases to amaze and astound me.

I'm happy to see that someone  other than  Jack Cafferty at  CNN has balls !!Well done Campbell Brown!
