McCain First

If you needed a playbook on how to use an imminent national crisis as a political re-branding apparatus, what would it look like?

Maybe you'd head down to the hurricane zone, ostensibly to gather information. You'd deep-six the first part of your party's convention (I assume everyone's heartbroken Bush won't be joining) so as not to overlap with the terrible storm.

But you'd also try to look and sound presidential, standing with your running mate and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour:

"...there's very little doubt that we have to go from a party event to a call to the nation for action, action to help our fellow citizens in this time of tragedy and disaster, action in the form of volunteering, donations, reaching out our hands and our hearts and our wallets to the people who are under such great threat from this great natural disaster."

And you'd use the crisis to continue your phony re-branding as an a-partisan reformer:

...Republican lawmakers are tying the storm plans to one of John McCain's central campaign themes: putting the country's interests above party politics.

A short time ago, I talked to Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota, who was running around trying to figure out the same thing we all are -- what comes next in the Twin Cities. Technically, Coleman said, the Republicans have to have a convention in some form. They can't have a presidential nominee without one. But "John McCain's whole message is about putting country first," Coleman said, and whatever the Republicans do with their rewritten convention agenda, whether it's a telethon or something else, will be geared toward that theme.

"We will be sending a very clear message to this convention that it's country first, not politics first," Coleman said.

"Country first," huh? How convenient. As I wrote before, the "Country First" slogan is becoming a crowbar for McCain to wedge between himself and George Bush's Republican party.

And it just so happens to be the theme of the GOP's convention.

It's absurd.

As a reminder, the great and thankfully now un-retired Bob Geiger chronicles McCain's opposition to Katrina relief.

Re: McCain First

"Country first" for McBush means expoliting a natural disaster by giving a convention speech on top of tragedy and ruins.

But instead of a roaring convention to cheer him on he'll have a depressing backdrop and gaggle of somber supporters. They've out thunk themselves this time.

Re: WOW - CNN Reports NO Bounce for Obama

You've used that line in at least 5 posts over the last week - do you get McCain points every time you use it or something?

So What.

Gallup Daily: Obama-Biden Ticket Leads by 6 Points
August 31, 2008

The Democratic presidential ticket of Obama-Biden holds a six percentage point lead over the Republican McCain-Palin ticket, 48% to 42%, in Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Thursday to Saturday. This includes two days of interviews after Obama's acceptance speech as well as McCain's vice presidential announcement.

Re: WOW - CNN Reports NO Bounce for Obama

LEts see...  The poll is by a small company most of us have never heard of... Not SUSA, Gallup, Rassumussen not even ZOGBY.   The poll was conducted Friday to Sunday of Labor Day Weekend... a lot of people are out or in flux... a lot of Obama supporters are going back to school.   We don't know if the Phone survey means landlines or cells too.  We saw NO DEMO breakdown at all of the poll so we have no idea of Party ID and the like.  No 3rd parties.  Obama's at 49% which matches most of the tracking polls, whereas McCain's number is all over the place from 42-48... indicating Obama's supporter may be a little more solid.

Ras has Obama up 3 and Gallup up 6.   I will bet money that McCain 's true support isn't 48 rather 44-45.

Re: McCain First

If he were really interested in "country first," he'd run an extraordinarily lame campaign so that Obama would win the presidency.

Oh, wait...

Re: McCain First

The slogan is like "clear skies" or "healthy forests".  It is GOP sarcasm meant to deflect criticism of the true intentions.

A person should want to be president to help the American people.  McCain wants to be a Commander in Chief who barks out orders and could care less about the American people.

Re: McCain First

Does anyone else have a problem with the McCain Camp using state and federal resources to secure his / and his 'tapped' VP pick's safety when the rest of the coast is in a state of emergency?

Personally, I think it's disgusting.

Re: McCain First

I do but the media isn't reporting on that.  Obama has said this is why he ISN'T going down there right now so his presence doesn't take away rescue resources.

Re: McCain First (a hypocrite)

I just read Politico where McCain's campaign is politicizing the hurricane by attacking Obama:

"Look at what happened today -- did Barack Obama attack John McCain or Sarah Palin?" Davis asked.

Told Obama had criticized McCain and Palin on the campaign trail over pay equity, Davis continued: "So he attacks us while there's a hurricane going on and John McCain suspends his convention basically. What bigger contrast can you have about putting your country first?"

Isn't it time we started hitting this opportunistic and hypocritical politician really hard and expose him for the fraud that he is? Democrats and Obama should quit playing nice.

Re: McCain First (a hypocrite)

There are those who say we're being to tough on them as it is.

Meanwhile, they're obviously politicizing a natural disaster and need to be called on it.

This sounds like a job for Super Biden.

Re: McCain First (a hypocrite)

really? someone says we are tough on them? who David Brooks and David Broder? Are we now gonna let dotards and Republicans run our campaign. Yes it is a job for Biden and for Obama and some other big name surrogates. Time to hit them hard. Enough of this "unity" and post-partisan shtick.

Re: McCain First

here's what I find disgusting -- that no news network has the balls to talk about what McCain and Bush were doing for the first days of Katrina and how unmotivated both of them have been to address any of the problems there since.

Now, all of a damn sudden, the two of them are all about caring for their fellow Americans.  What ever.

Take for example this douche Anderson Cooper who built his career on Katrina.  I thought he was all outraged and stuff about how the government handled Katrina and Bush celebrating McCain's birthday while NOLA citizens roasts and drowned.  But to watch him this evening, it's like all the outrage was bled out of him and nature was the Katrina bad guy.  Bah!

why do I sincerely doubt the decision makers within the GOP are disappointed right now that they have to shorten their convention.  No Bush or Cheney.  Erase the memory of Katrina.  Avoid questions about the safety of offshore drilling.  If they're lucky?  Dodge McCain or Palin making a typical acceptance speech.  Oh, and don't weather the comparisons to the most memorable convention in recent history.

Has anybody ever seen a shallower campaign?

Just asking. These are the highlights of McCain campaign.
1. Obama is a ``celebrity''

2. I (John) put my country first

3. Picks a woman primarily for two reasons.
   a) She is more right wing than James Dobson
   b) Because she is a woman

4. He is a former  POW

Next Thursday he will ask the country to vote for him because

He was captured in the Vietnam war.

WIll HE EVER GET IT?

Re: McCain First

I don't know if this is such a great opportunity for him, the more I think about it.  The GOP convention was the chance to do a steady drumbeat of "strength! surge! maverick! POW!" for a week.  Just as Obama gained from having the networks focused on a coherent message all week, McCain might have gained from endless: "Sarah Palin shows that McCain is SUCH a strong, awesome maverick who was right about The Surge.  Oh, and did I mention he was a POW?"  With network focus taken off of the convention, even endless displays of Action! McCain! might not be as effective.

Here is a suggestion for an ad

Make an ad about the failures of Bush adminstration.

Failure to protect us on 9/11, concot evidence to take us into unnecessary war (and show Ron Suskind's book), turn surplus to record deficits, subprime mortgage crisis, oil price and everything pales in comparison to
mismanagement of Katrina. Then say at the end:
``
If this is how Bush-McCain put the country first, then we have to put Bush-McCain last in order to bring the country back to its feet.''

by ann0nymous 2008-08-31 08:59PM | 0 recs
Re: Here is a suggestion for an ad

Sorry, but this is a very bad idea.  Most of America knows that Bush isn't running now.  They also know that Bush and McCain have never been best buds.  They don't see McCain and Bush as the same. Sorry, but that's true.

Can we just say something good about our guys?  Can ads tell voters what Obama and Biden stand for?  That really should be enough to win votes.

by SueBee 2008-08-31 10:25PM | 0 recs

UM... No You are wrong.   See the polls above.  Citing anecdotal evidence as proof is not proof, it just shows that you don't know what you are talking about.

Re: McCain First

At the press conference from Louisiana FEMA was 3 deep behind the governor.  It was bizarre, and apparent that they were on overkill.  Now McCain is taking advantage of it.  I hope that all the country gets a clue and can actually think critically enough to realize what is going on.

Why is everyone, even Democratic blogs, talking constantly about McCain and Palin?  McCain is already sounding like the President and where are our guys?  For the last three days, it's as if Obama and Biden have fallen off the planet.  What's up with this?

Re: McCain First

Obama has said that unless they want him to go there, he didn't want his visit to take away precious resources from the area.  He will use his Email list to get volunteers and donations once the storm is over and everything is assessed.  McCain is there because the jack ass MS Governor is politicizing this by inviting him down.

If the levees do not hold, the shit is going to stick to McCain.

by Bob H 2008-09-01 02:38AM | 0 recs
Re: McCain First

I'm not sure I agree with that.   Levees Break.  It wasn't the levees breaking during Katrina that caused Bush so many problems, it was the lack of a response to save people that did Bush in.

by yitbos96bb 2008-09-01 05:26AM | 0 recs
Re: McCain First

Huh?  Sorry, but I am not seeing the link between bad levies and John McCain.

McCain is dealing with the disaster, talking about it, canceling convention events.  At the convention he's setting up phone banks and charity programs to help people in the hurricane areas.  Also he's meeting with the Governors involved.

Meanwhile, Obama and Biden are campaigning?  Is that what I saw here?  Surely they are doing something more than that.  Aren't they?  Where the heck are they?  What are they doing to help people in the hurricane states?  What are they saying?

We cannot let McCain act like a President while our guys are no where to be found!

by SueBee 2008-09-01 09:56AM | 0 recs
Re: McCain First

The problem is I don't know if Obama can call McCain on this BS.  The media will crucify and the GOP will get into an effective but annoying whine-bitch fit which could make Obama look bad.   We need surrogates to do so, ones that if things start to spin Obama can safely throw under the bus.

Re: McCain First

A prediction.

Palin will discover that Trig needs far more attention than she anticipated, so therefore she is having to withdraw as a candidate. McCain accepts reluctantly, saying he has supported her one thousand percent.

She thanks McCain for his support and understanding. Then she goes back to Alaska, the land of no state taxes. But by golly, she cut them anyway, from nothing all the way down to nothing. After she finishes her term, the Alaska Railroad will name her as director of commuter rail services between Wasilla and Girdwood.

McCain then plays wheel of fortune and selects the first one of the Veep candidates who'll take the thing on.

by bamjack 2008-09-01 07:49AM | 0 recs
Not a chance

After announcing Palin, McCain surged to a 90% approval rating among republicans.  Palin has brought in $10 million to the McCain in the last 3 days.  She ain't going anywhere.  The republican base is FIRED up to support this ticket.  :(
