Cleanup, Aisle Four...

Throughout the Republican primary, John McCain spent much of his time stumping about how much he hated timetables. Remember when McCain used much of the debate at the Reagan library to clobber Mitt Romney for just mentioning the word timetable? Mitt even demanded McCain apologize for the accusation.

But since then, the convention wisdom has moved miles on Iraq. Maliki, for example, backs a timetable similar to Obama's.

But McCain doesn't seem to want to get left behind. Yesterday on CNN:

First the Iraqi government gave Senator Barack Obama a boost by seeming to embrace his proposal for a 16-month timetable for withdrawing American troops from Iraq. But could Senator John McCain, who built his candidacy in large part on his opposition to a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, possibly be following suit?

"I think it's a pretty good timetable," Mr. McCain said Friday in an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room,'' before adding that it should be based "on the conditions on the ground.''

For months Mr. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, has railed against setting timetables for withdrawing from Iraq, and has criticized Mr. Obama, his Democratic rival, for suggesting one. But in recent days the debate has shifted as Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, moved closer to Mr. Obama's position.

In the interview on CNN Mr. McCain first seemed to downplay any possibility that Mr. Maliki would actually ask for the United States to withdraw its troops in the next 16 months to two years. "He won't,'' he said, explaining that he knows Mr. Maliki well.

Remember, opposition to a timetable in Iraq represented one of McCain's most precious trademark positions. Victory over defeat.

I just can't understand why he's ceding this ground. He's admitting he's wrong on Iraq.

ALSO: just because it's Saturday, head over and watch McCain's presser in front of a dairy case. Yes, he is standing front of processed cheese:

Oh, God!  I'm actually embarrassed for the man!  Never have I seen a presidential candidate look so out of place, so out of his element, as this one...except, of course, for Chimpy McDumbshit.

EXCERPT

Power Play on Overseas Military Vote

Jun 28, 2008

Secretary of State Jan Brewer, Arizona's version of Florida's Katherine Harris or Ohio's Kenneth Blackwell, on June 13, 2008, proposed a centralized receiving of overseas military votes cast via the internet to her office instead of the county recorders or elections departments.

This is a problem that is spreading--there are 7 other states that allow internet voting from overseas voters. However, the security of internet voting has yet to be demonstrated.

There could be potentially 135,000 votes in hands of Brewer, co-chair of McCain's campaign.

As Brad Friedman quoted independent security experts "We believe that overseas voters deserve at least as much protection when they vote as when they purchase a book from Amazon...Our service people should not be voting on a system that creates risks of identity theft, hacking, and vote tampering and which requires voters to relinquish their right to a secret ballot."

See Brad's post DOD's new voting scheme:

what did McCain just say...

he all over the map with his response. It seems like the reporter was trying to help him out by feeding him lines... "so what your saying is..."

And why are they talking about Iraq in a supermarket... you would think that that were you go to talk about the economy and money issues....  I guess another home run for McCain

Santa, I've been very good this year.

And I would like Romney to be the VP candidate with McCain. How great would it be to have McCain, the most celebrated flip-flopper of this century, select a man for VP who he attacked so viciously during the primary?

Romney, of course, needs no help in looking ridiculous.  I think it would only take a few days before we see books like "Seamas: The Whole Stinkin' Story" or "My sons in Iraq? That's like a joke, right?"

Romney has a following and could quell the fears of the Club for Growth types.  But the baggage...omg.
